MLB Draft thread....SEC edition

Damn, if they only lose those 3 they are going to be loaded beyond belief. The gap is getting wider.

Wilson got drafted, he may or may not sign. But the 10th round is where the trouble is for Vandy, with Everett, Jones and Day still undrafted and Houston sitting on a war chest and Daz Cameron demanding upwards of $4 mil.

Other than Stewie, no current players go in the first 10 rounds...

Initial reaction is very good on that front. I was hoping Davila or Cabbage would fall but they didnt. Betts seems like our best bet to make it to college. Bleacher report said he wanted 2.5 mil and is only slotted for 1.1 mil

Evaluate the Bleacher Report note in the context of the information that last year only 3 of the top 104 draftees didn't sign. The probability of Betts arriving on campus is < 3%.

Well, they over-signed this class by a lot, fully expecting many of their recruits to sign. They're likely to lose Nolan Watson and Tristan McKenzie, and Denton from Ravenwood. But they're hoping to hold on to Everett and Day, who both were projected as potential first rounders.

Boras represents Everett, so the fact that he fell out of the first round likely means he's headed to a draft and follow. Corbin has never lost a draft and follow recruit in his 11 years in Nashville, including Sonny Gray, Tyler Beede and Pedro Alvarez.

Vandy is losing a ton of talent to the Majors this year. This is actually the one year in which the program NEEDS some of these pitchers to come to college.

What in the world are you talking about?
The draft-and-follow era ended in 2007 when the August signing deadline was imposed. Subsequently, the signing deadline was moved to mid-July.
Also, draft-and-follow never applied to incoming D1 freshmen. The only D1 players affected were draft eligible college players with remaining eligibility. Those players could sit out their senior season and play independent ball, either signing with their drafting club or re-entering the draft if the team wouldn't pay up. Luke Hochevar was one of the last of these.

I'm mixed...really feel for the players, must be disappointed...while hopefully they return, what does it say about our program when Vandy, LSU and UF etc..have so many going...Obviously from a fan stand point, I'm glad we seemed to avoid the worst case scenario...not sure we're out of the woods yet.

Also remember the #1 pick last year didn't sign so it's a possibility but definitely a 5% chance he is a vol.

because there was concern regarding is arm/shoulder health......ironically he had TJ surgery shortly thereafter when pitching his 1st game at IMG Academy.

Let's hope and let's speculate,

Simcox stays, 95% sure
Cox stays, 95% sure
Lee stays, 80% sure
Owenby, 50% sure
Jackson, 65% sure

Simcox I agree on

The other way too high IMO excluding Jackson

Cox 75%
Lee 25%
Owenby 25%

Yes but my point is the numbers can be what they wish and sometimes guys don't sign. All we can do is wait. Astros took a chance on Aiken and he didn't workout. They still had one hell of a draft this year.

If betts is on the team this year I'll be surprised like most of volnation.

I agree that Betts is signing, too much money for a little hurt pride.........

The juniors almost have to sign. They have no negotiating power as seniors.

Not necessarily

Jr offered 30k to sign certainly is nearly certain to get less the following year if they go back to school but the combination of their scholarship, competing in the sec another year, and completing their degree is worth more than the 25k at risk for many kids

I agree. There are plenty of Seniors who are getting drafted in rounds 3-10. I also agree that every situation is different and it should be a case by case decision.

I would never criticize a junior who left early, even if they were drafted in the 36th round and got an apple and a road map for their bonus.

Those seniors in round 3-10 aren't getting slot. Most people don't realize that

some of the low figures for top 10 rounds are pre-negotiated to allow more $$ to pay another top pick.

Example: Player A is a top pick and will demand more than his slot might suggest. Player B is a 20 round pick and he knows it. Team C tells player B that they will draft him in the 8th round however they will only pay 20th round money, he takes that deal because he likes that organization and he's happy to get drafted higher. Team C now has more slot money to pay Player A to lure him into signing.......

I don't disagree with your assessment, if I'm a junior and get drafted I'm probably going, especially if I would only have a year of education left to graduate. However there are few who roll the dice and stick around for another year of college for several reasons beyond a little money thrown at them.

very true, I knew someone who was a top 10 round pick and got 20 round money............
