MLB Draft thread....SEC edition

Day 1 is in the books. No real surprise for us. I expected the three that were drafted to go tonight.

Yep. Knew it was coming, but still stings. Glad for the kids tho. Same thing every year. Get a solid class only to have the draft take the wind out of our sails.

Today is the big day really. For the future of the team, we need guys to fall. I hate it for the kids to be disappointed, but especially for the high school kids it is almost not worth it now. Getting a bachelors is worth $600k over a lifetime easy

Recruiting classes can be screwed up real quick with the draft.

Apart from Daz Cameron falling to No. 37, the other big sinker that stood out on Monday was Chris Betts.

A prep catcher out of Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, Betts entered the draft ranked as a top-25 talent according to MLB.com and Baseball America. He looked like a good bet for the first round, or to at least be the second catcher off the board after fellow prep star Tyler Stephenson.

Neither happened. Betts was the third catcher off the board, and he didn't get picked until the second round at No. 52 to the Tampa Bay Rays.

According to Kiley McDaniel of FanGraphs, Betts slid due to his demand for a $2.5 million signing bonus. To get that, he'll need the Rays to agree to an over-slot deal, which would mean sacrificing a big chunk of their $6,591,300 bonus pool.

That's possible, but it's also possible that Betts will have to choose between a lesser number or trying again after a few seasons at Tennessee. Like with Cameron, he's just not in the position he was hoping to be in.

So? You're saying there's a chance?

Possibly, yes. I hope it works out for us. No way Hayes plays for us but a better chance for Betts than I initially thought. Lets hope the Rays don't want to pay him. I hate to wish that upon the kid but we need him, badly.

When they played Hayes' draft spotlight after he was picked, the question was asked where he wanted to be in 5 years. His comment was working towards being on a 40-man roster. You could tell he was thinking sign the whole way, and I can't blame him at all. Harold Reynolds raved about his bat. He has a bright future.

Will we lose all 4 recruits? I'd say Hayes is guaranteed and Betts likely but idk about the other two.

So what usually happens in these situations? 110 and 129, I'm assuming these kids sign and go pro?

Cabbage probably moved up to about 4th in annual income for this year in Grainger County. He should go to UT but from the way he sounded in today's KNS article, I'd say he's gone.

Not good.

These clubs don't draft these kids in these spots unless they expect to sign them.

Clubs need desperately to sign all of their top 10 round pics so they can overspend on picks later in the draft

Not looking good, boys and girls. Going to be another long season for Serrano and Co. with a less talented roster than we've seen the last 2 years.

Well, they over-signed this class by a lot, fully expecting many of their recruits to sign. They're likely to lose Nolan Watson and Tristan McKenzie, and Denton from Ravenwood. But they're hoping to hold on to Everett and Day, who both were projected as potential first rounders.

Boras represents Everett, so the fact that he fell out of the first round likely means he's headed to a draft and follow. Corbin has never lost a draft and follow recruit in his 11 years in Nashville, including Sonny Gray, Tyler Beede and Pedro Alvarez.

Vandy is losing a ton of talent to the Majors this year. This is actually the one year in which the program NEEDS some of these pitchers to come to college.

Damn, if they only lose those 3 they are going to be loaded beyond belief. The gap is getting wider.

Then it makes all the sene in the world to rack up $300k in student debt then, correct?

I don't know how you came to that conclusion from anything I said but, to answer your question, no. A two time return on cash over an adult lifetime would not satisfy any metric for ROI, IIR or cash flow I require for investment of my capital.
