'24 MO DL Williams Nwaneri (Mizzou commit)

The reality is, the only thing we truly have going for us on the defensive side of the ball is Rodney Garner. There is really nothing we can hang our hat on. And, head to head with UGA, for THAT side of the ball, it's a massive mountain that maybe Rodney Garner, only, can climb. If anyone can pull a kid away from that, it's him. Almost impossible, unfortunately, for someone they go all in on...right now.

And, Venables, the man does have 2 rings he can flash at kids to get their attention; not to mention, he's ALWAYS been a great recruiter, especially along the D line...also, another not to mention, all the DLinemen he's put into the NFL.

WE HAVE TO GET BETTER ON DEFENSE. We need a BIG year there!! Heupel can point to the O, something tangible that got us to 11-2, it's something real. The defense can't do that...the D still has to be sold as a vision.

Easy now you’ll get the Martinez crowd out with the pitch forks!

I like Willie, I do...he's very good, and has been for a long time...

With that said, he needs a big year, too...along with Banks, coaching the back end. Secondary has been horrible the first two years. I know pass rush, pressure from up front, DL and LB play, has A LOT to do with the secondary; still, they need a big year back there.

Yep , I’ve actually been impressed with Banks! He called a great game against Clemson in Orange Bowl, which I watched again today!!

We need them to be healthy for all of fall camp and the season more than anything.

We needed another influx of talent.
Yes we did….. hard to truly judge the last group with so many missing time but I agree that this last recruiting class is much more talented…. In a few years…. Secondary should be a strength.

I'm expecting it to be VASTLY improved this year...needs to be...should be. If they have another season like last year, it's not acceptable...in ANY way. Yes, the talent we brought in last year will need time; but, there's still more than enough guys in that room to be, at least, solid. I'm not asking for greatness THIS season, i dont believe the talent will allow that...im just asking for vast improvement, be solid. While saying that, yes, I realize the pass rush has to be better, as well.

I thought they were above average against Pitt, Kentucky, LSU, Vandy, Clemson, 2nd half against Missouri…. Have to clean up the way we performed against Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina…. Those were also the games the defensive line struggled in so it definitely goes hand in hand.

It’s Banks and it’s always been Banks.

He mad plenty of questionable calls that got blamed on Martinez. Is he perfect no but Banks deserved criticism last season
The calls don't matter if players don't execute. That being said, nobody on defense, other than Beasley, showed up for that South Carolina game. Secondary was rough with the amount of injuries we suffered from Spring throughout all of Fall.

Nothing Tennessee could have done was going to change the outcome

I’m sure there’s a lot of truth to this but it’s not as black and white as you say. For one…you’re still dealing with kids and the school itself still means a lot to some. The proximity to home, and vibe of the campus, knowing a few friends and or ladies could help etc. A lot goes into that. They’re all going to have different interests etc.

Us being able to offer an easier path to playing time earlier in their career will is a factor we’re certainly going to emphasize when recruiting against uga. Saban and Kirby have obviously been able to overcome that issue as they’ve been bringing in 5 star prospects in ever class and been able to keep it going. So obviously, they know other coaches are telling the kids it’ll be hard to get on the field with all the talent ahead of them. I’m sure they overcome the objection by saying things like…those elite classes keep us in the championship race (spotlight) until it’s your turn and competing against this kids ahead of you on a daily basis helps you improve. There’s some truth to that but the reality is some kids will choose more guaranteed playing time above that pitch.

The other factor these days is NIL. We’ve been able to sell out for certain defensive players ourselves recently such as with Arian Carter who choose us over bama. Still Tennessee is going to lose out to more elite defensive players going head to head with uga, but we’re going to win more of them moving forward if we continue to improve overall. And the positive is that UGA is going to lose out to some offensive players (perhaps mike Matthews etc) to us. Who’d have thought a few years back that might be happening.

Boils down to this, UT vs UGA, for an elite D lineman...

UGA: "No need to say anything bad about anywhere else. All I need to say is this...we win games, we win SEC Championships, we win National Championships. In the last 2 years, we've had FIVE Dlinemen go in the draft...ALL in the FIRST ROUND, including the #1 overall last year."

Tennessee...

Absolute crickets...we are NOWHERE NEAR that radar. 9 out of 10 kids WILL NOT HESITATE. The battles we have legitimately been in, is a testament to the staff. Yes, you will have that rare bird, that wants to blaze their on path, play early, money, etc. Again, rare, whenever compared to what they bring to the table. Never forget, they'll bring money, as well, a sh!t-ton of it, and their playing time leads to the NFL.

All of that is reality, and yes, it's pretty much black and white.

Now, all that UGA can say to a defensive recruit, and it's impressive, can be a bit combated after this year, if we can look across the table at the kid and say, "Yeah, but we beat their ass this year." THAT'S were things truly begin to even out.

So, are y'all saying we have no shot with this kid?

For sure. NO WAY GA can close ground on BAMA just a few years back with the fact sets in those days.

The new mobility and money may change how players weight all the factors involved. Old logic may not prevail in the current and morphing recruiting scene when the new hot coach comes calling.

To take absolute positions on such is folly, being prepared for variability is a much more logical path when SOME value relationships more than the balance of the factors. Those might be better FITS Anyway. Rather have the traditional upper hand but……. Rather fight in today’s clime.
