NBA vs NCAA

You are being exceptionally dense. Ariza played a single season in college. If you ever actually talk to an NBA scout, they will tell you one of the first assumptions they make about players who have been in college three or four years is that their shot is a finished product. The reason for that? It's true.

I agree with Hat here. You can't play 4 years of college and not be able to shoot the ball, and suddenly become a good shooter when you reach the NBA. Now, if Prince left after his Freshman season, then possibly you could make a case that he could improve his shot. But obviously, Prince's shot looks about as good as it's going to get.

I'd say Lewis is a pretty big addition. Playing next to another guy who has averaged 20+ for a season will help you get more open shots. Also, look at Jameer Nelson's college numbers. Nobody ever doubted he could shoot.

A 12% increase-big addition? Wow.
Nelson shot 36.4% from 3 in college. 45.3% right now. Difference.

Nelson played four years of college ball and a few more in the NBA as a 35% shooter, and then became a 45% shooter...no one says it has to happen right away, but after a few years it obviously did. Same with Okur; he was a 30-35% shooter for a while.

I'm not trying to say he will be a good shooter. Just simply that it can probably be improved. That is unless he is just completely uncoordinated.

So, what's the excuse going to be when he reverts to form next year? If you're using one year to assert something is a fact, I can say Antoine Carr was a 20 point a game quality scorer in the NBA. Actually, Jameer only played about half a season this year. So, if we want to use 50 game sample sizes, I can prove all kinds of preposterous things.

This is subjective, of course, but I was impressed to see how much Gerald Wallace's jump shot had improved after a couple of years in the league. I remember him as a slasher in college whom teams would lay off from outside b/c he couldn't consistently hit the J.

Quame Brown can't shoot:)

His roughly 42% last year was also a large improvement over his college career...

How many years did Gerald Wallace play in college?

Indiana in '87 and Kentucky in '98 are the only teams in recent history to win an NCAA title without a player who went on to have a significant NBA career.

Like I said, my memory is foggy, but who did UNC have in 1993 who did much of anything in the NBA? Maybe George Lynch?

I don't think that takes a 50 game sample size to prove. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to piece together 50 games total in his time in the NBA in which Kwame Brown has played quality basketball.

Maryland's 2002 team had a few NBA players - Wilcox, Lonny Baxter, Juan Dixon, Steve Blake.

I don't know I'd call any of them "significant."

Perhaps the best example? Glad you asked!
Kelenna Azubuike... Remeber him? FREAK of an athlete for Kentucky a few years ago.
Here is a quote from one of his scouting reports.
"If he is to someday make the NBA, he'll have to become a much better shooter from outside. Kentucky was sorely lacking a player who could hit the open 3 to compliment Rajon Rondo's ability to drive and dish, and Kelenna was not able to do that in many games for Kentucky this year, failing to hit more than one three pointer in 20 of Kentucky's 34 games. This is hardly the type of shooting ability you would expect from an NCAA junior who is confident enough in his offensive skills to forfeit his final year of NCAA eligibility. "

He is now 3rd in the NBA in 3pt shooting %.

Not if you factor in number of shots and the fact he was the main focus of every defense he faced at Saint Joe's.

And your excuse for Kevin Martin's steady improvement even though defenses are focusing more and more on him? 34.6% in college, 42.5% this year...up from 40.2% and 38.1%...looks like consistent improvement to me

Michigan State's 2000 championship squad is another. IS Mo Pete considered significant?

And also maybe UCLA's 1995 squad. The O'Bannon bros? Tyus Edney? Toby Bailey?
