'21 NC OT Diego Pounds (Ole Miss)

People keep saying "more portal in the Spring", but that means missing Spring practice where much of next year's team is set. Plus it ignores the fact that the talent pool in the Spring window will more likely be less because it will most likely be comprised of guys who couldn't win the starting job in Spring practice, which is why they're entering the portal at that time. The vast bulk of talent enters in the current window because they know the importance of Spring practice.

Mincey was our best option at RT so it sucks to lose him, but Missouri, Georgia, and Iowa made him look like a freshman. At this point in his career he isn’t likely to improve much, so we probably weren’t going to win a natty with him at RT. Losing him gave us an opportunity to upgrade the position. It’ll be disappointing if we don’t capitalize on that opportunity, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

He wants to be a LT because in the NFL, that's where the money is. We weren't giving him the LT spot over Campbell.
So if Ole Miss gets Pounds, like it seems, Mincey thinks he’s going to start at LT over him?

If Mincey picks OM, I guess so. I know I've heard he believes he's a LT and that he wants to play LT. It's generally the most compensated OL position in the NFL because they protect the QB's blindside, so everyone wants to be a LT. Darnell Wright was a unicorn in that he wanted to be a RT.

Good summary

He had a knee issue that was bothering him the second half of the season. He was trying to tough it out because we had very little depth behind him.

IS AP saying anything about the OL?

Nothing surprising or new. Essentially, Pounds is likely Ole Miss bound.

Hubbs thoughts on OL (also nothing new):
certainly concerning. Sounds like there were some circumstances with the Kansas kid that had him heading back home. You brought in three, my guess is given the need you were very competitive with NIL opportunities. One is going home. One visited here for 4-5 hours and the other might not visit you at all. Not a good weekend.

Hubbs pretty much echoes my feelings on this. Heupel has been great but these battles are fought in recruiting. This weekend has been an unmitigated disaster. If you lose the battle in the trenches in this conference it doesn’t matter if you have the greatest QB to ever walk the earth. I believe in Heupel but I also believe in criticism where it is merited. Given the supposed power and potency of our NIL it’s very concerning that the staff cannot land an elite player at the biggest position of need; meanwhile Ole Miss seems to be doing just fine and they 100% shouldn’t have near the money we do.
