Yes those guys had incredible hands and ran amazing routes and had enough quickness to get open. The best WR’s get up to their top speed QUICKLY and lose the least in making cuts. Jerry Rice never timed better than a 4.6 (despite constant training) but he was 3 steps ahead of the fastest corners in his day. Steve Largent and Steve Smith never suffered from their times clocked in shorts. When the pads were on, they outran the guys paid to stop them. There’s a reason they don’t do a yearly Combine.
You need a good balance of both. In today’s NFL I’m not sure a 4.7 guy could separate. But 4.5 is plenty fast and if they work with Leacock he could take a half second off his time.I think people put way too much emphasis on speed. I blame Tyreek Hill for that. People see him on the NFL and think oh man we have got to get a WR with sub 4.4 speed or his owner gonna be that good. Hill is an anomaly.
Route running>>>speed when it comes to WRs.
And Qb Timing…Niether a Montana or Rice were superior athletically….but they were always singing from the sheet of music.I think people put way too much emphasis on speed. Nah.Tyreek hill would be nobody if it wasn’t for his speed. I can guarantee you their is not too much emphasis put on speed. What do you want a slow dude out there running routes? Dobbs wouldn’t be in the NFL if it wasn’t for dual threat ability. Lamar Jackson is who he is because of his speed. The list goes on and on regardless of position. I would much rather Leacock run a 10.88 than a 11.5. You can teach someone to run routes. JmoI think people put way too much emphasis on speed. I blame Tyreek Hill for that. Well....Rice wasn't slow.A slow guy running routes? No. But let’s look at it. 4.6-4.8 would be considered slow for a WR. Yet the GOAT WR ran a 4.6. Heck he may have been slower than that. Route running is much more important in the WR position than speed. I mean who you taking in their prime, Jerry Rice or Tyreek Hill? It’s not even a debate.
Jerry rice wasn’t slow or he would have gotten tackled from behind more. And yeah not many people would take anyone over Rice.A slow guy running routes?
