‘23 NC WR Nathan Leacock (Tennessee)

Jerry rice wasn’t slow or he would have gotten tackled from behind more. And yeah not many people would take anyone over Rice.
He wasn’t near the fastest receiver is the point. But he was the best and there wasn’t a better route runner. The point was just because a guy runs a 4.3 doesn’t make him a great receiver, and just because a guy runs a 4.5 or 4.6 doesn’t mean he can’t be a greater receiver. Facts! GBO!

People too often confuse 40 times and game speed. 40 times don't always translate to the football field, and that works both ways (fast and slower 40 times).
I can see that. If you don't have to think just run then you can be faster. It's the guys who can read defenses and not loose your speed and quickness are the ones you want.

There's also a major difference between running on a track in very light shorts and shirt, and running on a field in full gear. Then you have to take into account technique for running track that vastly affects 40 times. There is still no question that speed kills. Especially in the college ranks. Cordarelle Patterson hasn't ran a good route in his life.

true

Also a 4.5 is not slow

The top 2 WRs in football last year ran 4.62 and 4.56

Leacock ran a good 100 time.

10.88 is good.

He probably runs 4.55

Has the ability to run 10.6 in the 100
Or
4.39- 4.41 in the 40 in a by junior season.
He's a natural runner. He could probably play a little RB if he wanted...

Do college football programs have a better metric that is used by high school recruits or (better yet) at our own camps? Surely there must be something better tracked, with cleats, pads, and helmets all on.

I think they track Mph, but that might be a thing they do before they put the pads on during the spring. So it wouldn’t necessarily be accurate of actual in game speed. I’m not sure though.

They never time in pads in high school or camps really (sometimes with a helmet but rarely). Some colleges do GPS tracking with players while practicing to get a more realistic idea of actual game speed. Most camps will time 10 and 20 yard splits because that translates to real football better than 40 yards with the exception of WR and DB.

Seems ripe for industry disruption or, better off, quietly building a competive advantage at UT.

Jimmy Johnson said one time folks put to much emphasis what a guys 40 time is in shorts. He said I used to ask what is his time in pads. Some folks run better in pads than others. I never understood why they don’t time them in uniform if they wanted a true gauge. This is football not track. GBO!

40 times are WAYYYY over rated go pull the data I'm sure it doesn't translate well at all.Give me a 6-3 225lb possession guy over a 4.31 John Ross. Most those dudes stay injured because of smaller frames. How CJ2k Chris Johnson was able to withstand the NFL for as long as he did at Rb especially is incredible.

The generalizations being made here are cute.

Spees guy vs possession? What's the cutt off point? I see 200 lbs WRs that you simply can't jam at the line, and I've seen 6'5 230 Mike Evans get handled by a DB 5 inches shorter than he was.

Most WRs in the league fall into the "possession " category. It's not just running good routes vs pure athletic ability...it's understanding your particular offense and the players around you , and being able to physically execute your assignment.

Juaun Jennings absolutely has many intangibles, speed at one of them, and his hands aren't as consistent as you'd like for a WR running 4.8. Speed would absolutely help him. It's not overrated one bit lol...
What keeps him around is that he blocks furiously and plays with fire. He breaks tackles and he's a good teammate.
But you ain't winning the division with a bunch of marginal athletes at WR that just run great routes haha.

There are deep threats and "possession " WRs. Not counting combo players like Deebo.

You need a certain level of speed and explosive abilities to perform at the skill spots in the NFL. That's a fact.

Leonard Scott is a perfect example.
Exactly. We've had our share of track guys at WR who could actually play, but we've also had some guys who weren't blazers like Scott who could flat out ball. Jennings leaps to mind. Scott would smoke JJ in a foot race. On Saturdays, there's no comparison.

Interesting discussion, Carl Pickens was one who did not appear to be flying, but e’rbody seemed to be in slow motion. It’s the damndest thing! Cliff Branch had speed and route running ability. Track guys = straight ahead speed, lateral movements are not needed. It’s all in the hips, just ask Shakira . Gotta have a good triggerman too
