‘23 NC WR Nathan Leacock (Tennessee)

He averaged almost 20 ypr over his career… that speed helped his receiving stats quite a bit as well.

Agree. Not saying it didn’t help him as a WR, just that, IMO, it helps more as a KR. That’s why guys like Leonard Scott and Nilo Silvan were better as returners than WRs.

The generalizations being made here are cute.

Spees guy vs possession? What's the cutt off point? I see 200 lbs WRs that you simply can't jam at the line, and I've seen 6'5 230 Mike Evans get handled by a DB 5 inches shorter than he was.

Most WRs in the league fall into the "possession " category. It's not just running good routes vs pure athletic ability...it's understanding your particular offense and the players around you , and being able to physically execute your assignment.

Juaun Jennings absolutely has many intangibles, speed at one of them, and his hands aren't as consistent as you'd like for a WR running 4.8. Speed would absolutely help him. It's not overrated one bit lol...
What keeps him around is that he blocks furiously and plays with fire. He breaks tackles and he's a good teammate.
But you ain't winning the division with a bunch of marginal athletes at WR that just run great routes haha.

There are deep threats and "possession " WRs. Not counting combo players like Deebo.

You need a certain level of speed and explosive abilities to perform at the skill spots in the NFL. That's a fact.
“Certain level” has become sub 4.4 in fan lexicon. 4.8 is stretching it but a 4.5 or 4.6 receiver who reaches top speed faster out of cuts are the best PERFORMERS.

All this speed talk has me thinking about Rocket Ismail in this offense. Dude was a pure burner, most teams played 20 yards off of him and most of the time didn’t kick to him either.

Um Gault was a good route runner who happened to possess world class speed. Was he a better WR than Rice? Not even close.
His hands were not the greatest at UT, he did get better at catching in the NFL. But he was the most electrifying runner in open field the Vols ever had. Cordarelle was good in the open field but Gault was a even faster version! GBO!

I mean, mock star gazers blah blah blah,…. But dollars to donuts if you surveyed this entire forum at the end of last season, I guarantee to a man, we all thought we’d get much bigger fish at WR this cycle than two three stars in Spillman and Leacock.

Edit: was just reminded we just got Seldon.

I can’t argue that, with the transformation of our receivers last year and the commitment of a top QB I assumed we could land a top tier receiver if not two.

I think Pickens and Patterson were both better open field runners in that they could stop/start and make people miss. Gault just had great straight line speed. And he was an example of track speed translating to football, which it doesn't always do.

Agree with the sentiment, and to be fair Seldon isn't a pure WR prospect and is more likely to get touches out of the backfield than from being lined up out wide.

That’s funny considering the same group people wants to sh*t on this kid’s moment just because they don’t have an extra star to their name.

If anything, the star gazers are just as annoying imo. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’d also bet dollars to donuts if Bama wanted him and he committed there he’d go from a 3 star to a 4 or 5 soon after.

Thought his brother Quadry was a better pure receiver…especially at the next level.
