Netflix password sharing

I can show you plenty of definitions that include dependent children.

Whatever the definition, this is a stupid marketing move that will likely result in more lost subscribers and negative impact on their market cap.

Adult children that are DEPENDANTS? Sure. Adult children that live elsewhere and are members of the HOUSEHOLD?

It is inevitable. As long as sub count continued to grow the executives were rewarded as the share price followed. With peak sub growth reached and even in decline Netflix will transition to the traditional methods of securities valuation - more bottom line than top line. Negative PEs or 3-digit PEs won’t be dismissed any longer. Amazon’s market cap grew for a decade or two without publishing financials showing a profit. Now they are being held accountable and last I looked had around a 20x multiple.

I don’t fault their marketing. As far as I know they’ve not sent any formal notice to their users. Reducing the abuse of shared passwords is critical for the LT P&Ls. The marketing with a more restrictive user agreement in place hasn’t commenced. They will play nice. They will want the 20 something’s to sign up themselves. It won’t surprise me at all to see a promotion with special pricing directed at the kids moving away from their households or away at college.

Stop with the passive aggressive insults. I’m trying to have an adult conversation.

There’s not a passive aggressive insult there. It’s actually the opposite. I’ve just suggested that there are many simply IGNORANT of what is theft of the Netflix service instead of willingly subscribing to the lawlessness.

Lets do a real brain twister. My sister shares her NF password with me. The only time I use it is when I watch her son so he can watch some of the shows he likes. Since I have the password, but he is watching is that stealing?

Be sure to wipe your fingerprints off of his tablet.

I would say no. That is not stealing. Now, if you stay logged into the account when the kid isn't there and you are watching Netflix on your own, I would say that is stealing. Yes. I realize that I am splitting hairs. It is a principals-based approach.

Thats beyond splitting hairs. Honestly if you dont work for nextflix, you care way too much about something that has little to no effect on you.

It's about trying to do what is right and living up to the meaning and spirit of the agreement that you signed. Yes. I realize that most people don't give a damn about trying to live with integrity. That doesn't mean that what they're doing is right.

...and this isn't just some imaginary situation for me. I have a close friend whose wife thinks I should just give her passwords to all my accounts so they can use them. I don't share my accounts and passwords. Period.

Lol. Major companies take advantage of consumers daily. Take advantage of them when you can.

I’m legitimately laughing that people care about Netflix password sharing. One would think there are more important things in life to be concerned with, but I guess some people don’t have a lot going on.

Investors in Netflix stock have lost $50 billion today.

If investors didn't understand the phenomenon of password sharing, they need to do more due diligence before they invest. It wasn't exactly a secret.

They knew what they were doing. Allowing the theft was okay as long as the subscriber count continued to grow. The stock valuation has been positively correlated to the sub count. They really don’t make much money because they have to spend a fortune on content and to a lesser (relative) extent infrastructure. As a maturing company the stock price will transition to the traditional method of valuation - profitability rather than growth. With sub growth stagnant they can save on CapEx for infrastructure by weeding out the thieves. The subscriber revenue shouldn’t fall much by removing the cheaters. They might even start growing their subscriber base when some of the thieves are cut off and have to get their own accounts to view their shows.

Although that assumption seems intuitive, I don't think it is valid.

I have a subscription. I share with my sister. My sister would not be able to afford it by herself and I do not use it enough to justify the price (the value for me is my minimal use + subsidizing my sister). Thus, they would lose my subscription for password sharing without gaining back business from either myself (alone) or my sister (alone). Instead of having one subscription for two households, Netflix ends up with zero subscriptions from two potential customers.

I'm not naming names, but me thinks someone in this thread has stock in Netflix 👀🤣

I’ve already said that I don’t. However, if I wasn’t so distracted by this thread, I might could have bought a few shares this afternoon. But it’s off another 1.4% in the after hours. It’s hard to resist trading an iconic name that’s down over 35% in one session.
