I like to look at the age of the candidate before I look at anything else. Now saying that go ahead throw out Petrino (we don't need that circus) and Fulmer (I know there are some who would like him back but we've been there done that. There was a reason he wasn't really considered by any other school after he left Tennessee)
Jim Tressel - 59
Charlie Strong - 52
Gary Patterson - 52
Jimbo Fisher - 47
Jay Gruden -45
Pat Fitzgerald - 37
Kirby Smart - 36
Out of the guys listed Pat Fitzgerald intrigues me the most. He's the right age IMO. He has a solid career started with his record at a middle of road Big10 school.
Kirby Smart - I've really never been a fan of Defensive coaches becoming Head Coaches. One thing to consider here he would probably keep Sunseri as his DC.
Ohhhh dear god no. We've been screwed for years now. We HAVE to get a proven head coach, not another coordinator. I swear, some people.....
Of those listed, I would say Patterson. His defense scheme of choice is a 4-2-5. He had this to say about how you adapt to the personnel year in and year out (per Football Scoop):
In 2000, we had 10 NFL guys and we hardly blitzed at all, playing base defense and only blitzed 6 percent of the time. In 2002, our personnel was different and we man-blitzed 43 percent of the time. In 2008, we were a zone-blitz, two shell team, that's what we did the best. In 2009, we were a four-man rush team because we could run. In 2010, 50 percent of the time we held offenses to three and out. When you get teams down to six possessions you're going to have a chance to win. You just have to find what you're good at.
Last year we weren't very good in red-zone defense. The key was, teams didn't get there, so it didn't make any difference. Our whole thing comes down to how many touchdown passes do you give up in a year. We want to average one a game. The last three years we've allowed eight, 10 and 10. We're going to have people in the box to stop the run. Stopping the run and don't give up big touchdown passes, don't give up the big play.
It's one thing to say you can make the adjustments, another to do it. But he has backed it up year in and year out.
On the down side the are 6-4 thus far in the first season in the Big 12 and will be underdogs against Texas and Oklahoma.
Bobby Petrino Too much baggage - never happen
Kirby Smart No more assistants
Jim Tressel See Petrino
Charlie Strong Not proven
Gary Patterson - The only logical choice if no Jon Gruden
Jimbo Fisher Overrated as coach
Jay Gruden NFL future HC
Phillip Fulmer Been there done that
Pat Fitzgerald Northern coach no thanks
Does anyone that says Tressel not follow CFB. The man has a "show cause" against him. Dave Hart would be in the unemployment line if he hired him.
Petrino is a snake in the grass. Good coach, but again too much baggage.
What about Al Golden at Miami or Peterson at Boise State?
:lolabove:If were going to be realistic about picking a new coach please show some real numbers and stats to prove there a winner no more speculation. here's the numbers to go with my pick.
15252 record
6 Conference division titles
2 Conference titles
1 National Championship
Known to be an ace recruiter
10+ years in the SEC
No more speculation on if they can do it or not lets see some real numbers.
I'm not convinced any of these guys can get us contending for a NC anytime soon, and that should be the expectation at Tennessee.
If we end up with Petrino or Smart, I'm walking away from UT football. Reasons:
Smart - Not a proven HC and I'm tired of the Saban and Bama connections
Petrino - I guess I still value morals and ethics. And even if he ended up here and won, history tells us he'd leave behind a disaster whenever he left.
