New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

Also, 6 years for $33 million seems a bit excessive for a coach currently unemployed, especially when a bidding war hasn't even begun. That would be $5.5 million per year, making him the highest paid coach in the country by more than $300,000 and increasing his previous pay at Arkansas by almost $2 million. Doesn't add up.

There's no way Petrino could weasel his way in to being the highest paid coach in the nation after his motorcycle firing debacle. There's just no logic in any of that.

Gruden has lost almost as much as hes won, lets give him any amount of money and a endless contract and hope he can win, or we can get a proven winner, i dont want to cross my fingers and hope..

Yes but a lot of times in the NFL coaches don't have full control. If he were to come to TN he would be able to get the players he wants and the coaches he wants. In the NFL you have an owner and GM who can sometimes get in the way of a coaches control.

People downing Gruden like he's not a good coach are just dumb.. He is a good coach and probably the highest profile person in football right now that is available which would be incredible for recruiting. Even if Gruden were not a Super Bowl winning coach he would still win games because we would have an immense increase in talent.

That said.. It's not going to happen.

Coaches in the NFL don't sign the players to contracts. Sure they can put their input in, but the owner is the man who writes the check. Gruden wouldn't have that problem here at TN

I'm starting to have my doubts about Gruden coming to TN; however, I really want him to be the next coach because he has the things that we need in our next hire- and the same criteria that Hart is looking for in the next coach.

But I think it is time as a fan base to (if possible) lay down the itch to create drama and speculation about who is the next coach and trust Hart.

Gruden seems to be the elephant in the room now. IF Gruden is interested in coaching at a college level, then it will be TN. Despite Arkansas wanting to throw money at him, too many people close to him (Gruden) are saying that he is not interested in that job. I really believe that if Gruden wants the job - then it is his job. If Gruden can be brought in, then Hart can and will do it. I have heard that Gruden wants control but I feel some of that is misread. If Gruden can not be brought in, then it is not the end of the world.

I don't think money will be an issue and it is kind of hard to say money is the issue considering our donor/booster list. Just because our reserves are small doesn't mean that we don't have the money.

I think after watching Hart's press confence today, it is apparent that Hart knows who is on his A list. I think Hart confidently knows who he can get. Hart is smart, careful (almost methodical), and he knows what he wants. As a fan base, that is a great place to start in my opinion - getting behind Hart's leadership. Hart made some great points about the program, the university, and the coaching job.

I think we will have a coach by the first of the month of December and possibly after the KY game. Be patient.

Please don't start a Hire Phil thread.
If he was such a great coach, when we fired him someone would have hired him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

According to Twitter....Petrino is our man. I know he has alot of baggage but so does the Vols. This may be a match made to fulfill 2 needs. He needs a job and we need to win. He has proven he can win that is without a doubt. If this does happen his contracts needs to state that he will reimburse the school if there are any type of violations. Alot of people are against him and i can agree with them but, this is an opportunity for both sides to win if it does happen. Personally i am ready for anyone who can lead us out of the bottom of the barrel. Any coach that comes here in our situation is taking a chance, if he will do it for us why can't we do it for him. Any opinions or logical thoughts?

Looked like an Arkansas beat writer or fan linked the page to their twitter account so I wouldn't put much, if any, faith in it.

Of the main guys everyone here is discussing, Petrino is probably the easiest to get in the fold and wouldn't cost as much as Gruden. Like many here, I have some concerns about his past and before Hart even thinks about letting him walk the sidelines, I get to the bottom of what has happened and tie a morals clause of some kind in his contract that will favor us if he goes sideways.

He is a high risk, high reward coach, but he wins and will get us back to a national championship level program.

Got e-mail from 3SIB that has David Cutcliffe on a list as possibles. UT's program needs an instant Grand Slam home-run hitter. We certainly do not need someone that would fit Duke only. ( Isn't that another basketball school?). Cut is a good quarterback coach, but we do not need Cut or Fulmer. Gruden is pretty much a must . Any lateral move is a major bust.

Tennessee gets what it deserves if we hire Petrino. The man has zero loyalty to anyone. It would be Lane Kiffin Part II and you can't trust him for anything. Might as well invest your entire nest egg with the next slimeball guaranteeing you 30% return on your money. From all serious accounts, he's not in the top 5 unless something goes horribly wrong in this coaching search. I would be willing to bet Hart has calculated the risk with Petrino and won't even go there. He stated is "has to be a good fit" and considering what we've been through, this hire is too important to take a chance on a clown like Petrino.

Gruden, Strong, Patterson, Fisher, Mullen, Franklin. Wild cards - Smart, Mora Jr.

Sucks to be KY.....they'll have to settle for the leftovers from TN, Auburn and ARK - if there are any.

Was sorry to hear about Dooley, I think the dude has a lot of character and is a genuine good guy but he just can't be a head coach. I do think in the next few years people will realize he helped the program right itself from a character/academic perspective. On the field however he left a lot to be desired. All of those calling for Gruden to be head coach puzzle me. The man is an NFL guy through and through and would absolutely not be the best candidate under any criteria whatsoever. Watching Harts presser and reading into what he said three names were immediately obvious to me and they are Fisher, Strong and Sumlin but whether he can get either of those gentlemen to Knoxville is a different story.

It is possible that he has assessed the risk and has decided that it isn't worth it, we aren't sure. The comments above indicate that is certainly a possibility.

I hope that the latest debacle with Arkansas has allowed him to change his priorities and learn from his mistakes. His son, per his comments, seems to think that is the case and if he is sincere then Petrino, like many people in life who make mistakes, deserve another shot.

If we pass on him, (which is justifiable) and UK takes a chance and it works, then we are another rung or two down the ladder. Given our situation, is that what we want?

This hire is probably the most critical in the programs recent history. Hart has to get this right and I trust him to do what is the best interests of UT.

Go Vols!

Would love to see "Chucky" on our sidelines. At least we get immediate national exposure. TV time and recruiting plus!

Gruden is a good NFL coach, but he is far from a great coach. For those that have experienced the Gruden coaching system they know there is little chance he would ever coach at the college level. First, Gruden's system is incredibly complex and near impossible to learn for young professionals, let alone college aged kids that don;t have 80 hrs/wk to dedicate to the playbook. Second, Gruden's major weakness is at developing interpersonal relationships. Finding former players that will say something nice about the guy is harder than spotting bigfoot. Third, he has a history of destroying young talent. You will be hard pressed to name more than a handful of young players, drafted and developed by Gruden on offense. His successes in the league were with grizzled veterans. Fourth, he could not co-exist with a GM, let alone an AD. Gruden is a total control guy. There is no total control at the college level. Fifth, he would be a recruiting disaster. Sure, you could make the argument that some offensive players would be taken by his reputation and his work on ESPN, the reality is that he would be hard pressed to truly develop the relationships with high school coaches and parents necessary to find true success at recruiting to a big time program. Sixth, Gruden's agent is the master at floating rumors to keep Jon in the game, so to speak. There has not been a job opening at the the major college or pro level that Gruden's name has not been associated with, even though he was never a real candidate for any of them.

UT will be best served going after an experienced college coach that will bring character back into the program.

Ive heard many names for the coaching spot on Rocky Top. One that intrugies me the most is Bob Stoops. Yeah I know he is in a winning program right now but he is dealing with the same things at OK that Spurier wasdealing with at FL before he left. The days of 10 win seasons and Bowl games arent good enough for them anymore and the fans arent happy and neither are the boosters. So he is a valid option for the Big Orange.

I tend to agree with this. In this game in this day and age it's all about "what have you done lately?" And he hasn't done jack as a coach in a long time. Just don't understand this lust some people have over this guy.

Wins vs. Losses says we need to steal Petersen cuz I've never heard of Kyle Flood and Chip Kelly isn't coming here. Maybe Jim Mora
