New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

I just think Gruden would be great for getting recruits and that would make coaching a much easier job. But like I said before I don't even begin to think he would come here or will ever come here.

Gruden is a good NFL coach, but he is far from a great coach. For those that have experienced the Gruden coaching system they know there is little chance he would ever coach at the college level. First, Gruden's system is incredibly complex and near impossible to learn for young professionals, let alone college aged kids that don;t have 80 hrs/wk to dedicate to the playbook. Second, Gruden's major weakness is at developing interpersonal relationships. Finding former players that will say something nice about the guy is harder than spotting bigfoot. Third, he has a history of destroying young talent. You will be hard pressed to name more than a handful of young players, drafted and developed by Gruden on offense. His successes in the league were with grizzled veterans. Fourth, he could not co-exist with a GM, let alone an AD. Gruden is a total control guy. There is no total control at the college level. Fifth, he would be a recruiting disaster. Sure, you could make the argument that some offensive players would be taken by his reputation and his work on ESPN, the reality is that he would be hard pressed to truly develop the relationships with high school coaches and parents necessary to find true success at recruiting to a big time program. Sixth, Gruden's agent is the master at floating rumors to keep Jon in the game, so to speak. There has not been a job opening at the the major college or pro level that Gruden's name has not been associated with, even though he was never a real candidate for any of them.

UT will be best served going after an experienced college coach that will bring character back into the program.

Completely idiotic, thanks have a nice day:peace2:

I tend to agree with this. In this game in this day and age it's all about "what have you done lately?" And he hasn't done jack as a coach in a long time. Just don't understand this lust some people have over this guy.

I guess all of ESPN and MNF have your same opinion lol:lolabove::eek:lol:

Rule #1 - If we have to google the next coaches name to find out who he is.....Probably not the right guy.

Rule #2 - If the next coach has a losing record at his previous school....Probably not the right guy.

Rule #3 - Just because you have a winning record at your last school, but the school was FCS school or a lower echelon FBS school, such as La.Tech, Central Mich. or Fla. Atlantic....probably not the right guy!

The NFL and college are two different beasts--and one could certainly argue that an experienced college coach would be our best bet. NFL guys, however, do bring a lot to the table in terms of x's and o's, name recognition. Kiffin would have gotten us back to the top pretty quickly--before getting us sanctioned! And Gruden could probably do the same. The question with a guy like Gruden is, how will he handle working for an AD, how will handle the chore that is recruiting, how long will he stay--those issues.

OK, I haven't posted in weeks while all this BS has been swirling. Just enjoyed all the noise. Guess what I've most been wondering is....

Gruden won a Super Bowl. That's a really big deal. But overall his record was just over 500 and he was fired. So why, exactly (good reasoning, please, not glib smart arse answers) is he so highly favored by Vol Nation?

As are the records of most "great" NFL coaches.

While there were several blanket statments you made that have no merit or backing, as a Raider fan, and someone who has followed and knows a lot about Gruden, your 4th statement is way off base. Bruce Allen left the Oakland Raiders as GM to work with Gruden in Tampa due to the familiarity they had with one another. The owner gave Gruden and Allen the keys to the castle. And to your point, Gruden's fault in Tampa was going after diamonds in the rough at the QB position. The defense was all Monte Kiffin.

While Gruden does not have college coaching experience, he does have some of the most important characteristics to succeed at the college level, 1. Name recognition(No need to explain to possible recruits who the coach is) 2. Contact Knows many, many coaches and could bring in the kind of assistants we need to make the program flourish, 3. A tie to UT in some form He was a grad assistant and his wife is from UT. With the coaches the new UT Coach will be trying to compete against, name recognition or a top 10 level coach is a must! Have to be able to recruit against Saban, The Mad Hatter, Muschamp, Spurrier, and Reicht.

FWIW-I just left Foxsports.com. Yardbarker had 15 possible choices listed and a short summary.

LOL, they listed Mark Stoops the D.C. for Ok.. I am not one who thought Stoops would leave, but I did not think they thought so little of Tn that we would have to go after his brother.:loco:

Gary Pattersen please.
I listen to Sports Animal most days and seems like there is not much momentum for this guy. How come?

ok here is what we do to buy out dooley and have money for Gruden::

We sell tickets to Neyland for a coach announcement. Peyton manning is there shaking hands and kissing babies, and you can catch a pass from peyton for a cost of $20. Then "The Power T" forms and Gruden runs thru it, gives Manning a hug. Steps up to the microphone and says "Don't worry Volnation....Daddy's home.

:lolabove: That would be epic!!!!

Really??? Gruden has not coached forever!! Let Arkansas have him. They will overspend greatly and only get mixed results in the end. Don't think name recognition is going to help in the recruiting game. Saben, Miles, Muschamp, and Richt wont lay down cause Gruden is at Tennessee. We had the same problem after 08, everybody wanted the "rock star" coach, once we got him look what happen?

I like Dooley, taking over a program on January 15th is an unfair task to ask anyone to do. Having to follow a bonehead like Kiffen, made it worse. In the end, Derek was a great band-aid for this program. He brought class, ethics, moral standards, and good conduct to the program. It's a shame the SEC was just beyond his ability when it came to coaching....BUT, the new HC will transition into this position MUCH easier than Dooley did. Kudos to Derek and his family, I wish him the best of luck.

Laugh at my list if you will, But the Gentlemen that I am suggesting have won at places, where it is not easy to win football games. Schools that don't match the facilities, money, or budget that UT will be able to offer.

David Cutcliffe-This job should be his to turn down. You win at Mississippi and Duke you have earned your stripes.

Jim Grobe-You win at Ohio University and Wake Forest, Basketball schools, you deserve a shot at the top. He would be able to recruit with the best of them as well.

June Jones-Hawaii and SMU...yes I said SMU...He reserected a program from the DEAD. He is very familiar with the South, California and Texas....Huge bonus for recruiting.

Randy Edsall-Should have been offered the job instead of Kiffin. He has done well at Basketball rich schools UCONN and Maryland.

Art Briles-Baylor is a good football team in a State where it is difficult to turn heads. He has done it. With his offense he could make an impact right away.

Guys I think that would be nuts to take this job.

Peterson-Why?? He has set the bar in Boise, guys knock down his door to go to Boise...Im not sure he can, or wants to recruit in the heart of the Southeast.

Jimbo Fisher-lateral move....see no positives in this for either party.

And Guys Im just not sold on....Gruden, Golden, Petrino.

Wild Cards....Charlie Strong and Bob Davie.

Just remember, we are winless in the SEC, this is not going to be a cakewalk for whoever takes this program over. We are officially in the REBUILD stage!! We need contenders for the long haul....Not pretenders.

As always, Go VOLS!!

Ainge back tracked, and says the original plan, from his sources, was Cutcliff, with Chavis returning to UT, as DC, with a hefty raise(500k to 900k). But, Cut came out and declared that he'd be returning to Duke next season, and Chavis will not return as an assistant. HC only. So, we fire Dooley, and they bail. WTF? It's like they had it in for UT all along.

Is this Karma, coming back to bite us in the ass? Most rival messageboards say yes. Apparently, UT has been quite the thorn in several programs' side. Do we have any friends in the SEC? If not, should we bail? I mean, if the entire SEC hates UT......What's the point?

Realistically, we are looking at NOT GETTING A HOMERUN HIRE. Apparently no one wants this dam job. Even though UT is listed as the most prestigious job opening in the NCAA for next year.

Screw it!! Hire the ENTIRE MARYVILLE STAFF. All they know how to do is WIN, baby!!

We swept Phil out of Knoxville easier than the Giants disposed of the Tigers in the series. That guy was only a resident, student, long time asst, and a great football coach. A LEGEND, disposed of. I would venture to guess, the list is longer for guys who DONT want this job, as compared to those who do??

We don't need a Home Run hire. We need someone that has proven they can rebuild and win. That's it...that's all we need.

Yeah, we did run Phil outta town, like he had the plague, or something. That doesn't look good. We weren't exactly nice to John Majors either.
