Gruden is a good NFL coach, but he is far from a great coach. For those that have experienced the Gruden coaching system they know there is little chance he would ever coach at the college level. First, Gruden's system is incredibly complex and near impossible to learn for young professionals, let alone college aged kids that don;t have 80 hrs/wk to dedicate to the playbook. Second, Gruden's major weakness is at developing interpersonal relationships. Finding former players that will say something nice about the guy is harder than spotting bigfoot. Third, he has a history of destroying young talent. You will be hard pressed to name more than a handful of young players, drafted and developed by Gruden on offense. His successes in the league were with grizzled veterans. Fourth, he could not co-exist with a GM, let alone an AD. Gruden is a total control guy. There is no total control at the college level. Fifth, he would be a recruiting disaster. Sure, you could make the argument that some offensive players would be taken by his reputation and his work on ESPN, the reality is that he would be hard pressed to truly develop the relationships with high school coaches and parents necessary to find true success at recruiting to a big time program. Sixth, Gruden's agent is the master at floating rumors to keep Jon in the game, so to speak. There has not been a job opening at the the major college or pro level that Gruden's name has not been associated with, even though he was never a real candidate for any of them.
UT will be best served going after an experienced college coach that will bring character back into the program.

OK, I haven't posted in weeks while all this BS has been swirling. Just enjoyed all the noise. Guess what I've most been wondering is....
Gruden won a Super Bowl. That's a really big deal. But overall his record was just over 500 and he was fired. So why, exactly (good reasoning, please, not glib smart arse answers) is he so highly favored by Vol Nation?

FWIW-I just left Foxsports.com. Yardbarker had 15 possible choices listed and a short summary.
Rule #1 - If we have to google the next coaches name to find out who he is.....Probably not the right guy.
Rule #2 - If the next coach has a losing record at his previous school....Probably not the right guy.
Rule #3 - Just because you have a winning record at your last school, but the school was FCS school or a lower echelon FBS school, such as La.Tech, Central Mich. or Fla. Atlantic....probably not the right guy!
ok here is what we do to buy out dooley and have money for Gruden::
We sell tickets to Neyland for a coach announcement. Peyton manning is there shaking hands and kissing babies, and you can catch a pass from peyton for a cost of $20. Then "The Power T" forms and Gruden runs thru it, gives Manning a hug. Steps up to the microphone and says "Don't worry Volnation....Daddy's home.
Ainge back tracked, and says the original plan, from his sources, was Cutcliff, with Chavis returning to UT, as DC, with a hefty raise(500k to 900k). But, Cut came out and declared that he'd be returning to Duke next season, and Chavis will not return as an assistant. HC only. So, we fire Dooley, and they bail. WTF? It's like they had it in for UT all along.
Is this Karma, coming back to bite us in the ass? Most rival messageboards say yes. Apparently, UT has been quite the thorn in several programs' side. Do we have any friends in the SEC? If not, should we bail? I mean, if the entire SEC hates UT......What's the point?
Realistically, we are looking at NOT GETTING A HOMERUN HIRE. Apparently no one wants this dam job. Even though UT is listed as the most prestigious job opening in the NCAA for next year.
Screw it!! Hire the ENTIRE MARYVILLE STAFF. All they know how to do is WIN, baby!!
We swept Phil out of Knoxville easier than the Giants disposed of the Tigers in the series. That guy was only a resident, student, long time asst, and a great football coach. A LEGEND, disposed of. I would venture to guess, the list is longer for guys who DONT want this job, as compared to those who do??
We don't need a Home Run hire. We need someone that has proven they can rebuild and win. That's it...that's all we need.
