New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

I agree, we need INSTANT results and bliss! No time for any "processes" or "year -2" crap! Gruden is the man to get us back on the map asap. He would be like Kiffin on crack. Remember, no matter how much you hate him, Kiffin had Tennessee as the most talked about 5-7 team EVER.

Yep, he sure brought down the NCAA's attention to put us on probation through 2015...Kiffin could coach QBs, but after that--HE BROUGHT the Vols down to their lowest point--EVER--and we are still crawling out of the hole he created...

HONOR THY VOLS...CHERISH THEM...but have a BRAIN!

Gruden is a good NFL coach, but he is far from a great coach. For those that have experienced the Gruden coaching system they know there is little chance he would ever coach at the college level. First, Gruden's system is incredibly complex and near impossible to learn for young professionals, let alone college aged kids that don;t have 80 hrs/wk to dedicate to the playbook. Second, Gruden's major weakness is at developing interpersonal relationships. Finding former players that will say something nice about the guy is harder than spotting bigfoot. Third, he has a history of destroying young talent. You will be hard pressed to name more than a handful of young players, drafted and developed by Gruden on offense. His successes in the league were with grizzled veterans. Fourth, he could not co-exist with a GM, let alone an AD. Gruden is a total control guy. There is no total control at the college level. Fifth, he would be a recruiting disaster. Sure, you could make the argument that some offensive players would be taken by his reputation and his work on ESPN, the reality is that he would be hard pressed to truly develop the relationships with high school coaches and parents necessary to find true success at recruiting to a big time program. Sixth, Gruden's agent is the master at floating rumors to keep Jon in the game, so to speak. There has not been a job opening at the the major college or pro level that Gruden's name has not been associated with, even though he was never a real candidate for any of them.

UT will be best served going after an experienced college coach that will bring character back into the program.

Wow, you sure make a lot of absolute statements about how Gruden would fail when he has never been a NCAA head coach. He did build the Raiders from the ashes to a Super Bowl team--under THE PREMIER CONTROL FREAK: Al Davis--that speaks volumes about his ability. Where were the Raiders before Gruden and where are they now?

Sure, Gruden took a TB team that Dungy built to the SB--and WON--but anyone who knows ANYTHING about the TB ownership knows that Tampa Bay is the absolute WORST organization in the NFL.

Concerning your remarks about total control at the college level and coexisting with the AD and building relationships with high school coaches...I have ONE NAME: Nick Saban!

Hear from friend that Gruden signed up for a Kroger plus card at the Kingston Pike Kroger.

My sister in law's cousin's step neighbor in law saw Gruden filling up car at said Kroger using his .10 per gallon discount. Then went across the street to Pilot (coincidence???) to buy a cup of coffee using his Pilot Rewards card. Also bought the last Hostess Twinkie...lucky ba$+ard!!

Unfortunately, this attitude also has deep historical roots among Tennessee fans. Majors eloquently dubbed this contingent of the Big Orange Nation as the "Legions of the Miserable." In the statistical sense of the word, I have no idea just how prevalent this hypercritical attitude is. I would like to think that it is characteristic of only a tiny, but very vocal, fraction of Tennessee fans. Although I am not so vain as to think that our collective contributions to this forum would significantly impact the interest level of prospective coaching candidates, one could erroneously conclude, based on the acrimony expressed in dialogue on this board, that the Big Orange Nation is a pit of vipers that canibalistically consumes its own. Hart hinted at this in the most diplomatic terms when he stated that "we are blessed to have such a passionate fanbase. That passion, of course, assumes many forms."

I could understand the venom that has permeated so much of the recent dialogue here . . . if it was directed at our SEC adversaries. We need to conduct ourselves, particularly in communication with each other, with the class and dignity of the champions we have so often been. After all, as my brother has often said, God only made 108,000 perfect people; the rest he made Gator, 'Bama, Georgia and, perhaps, most contemptible of all, Vanderbilt fans.

Who wrote your script?

Gruden will not be coming to UT unfortunately. Me along with everybody else that works in the athletic department at UT knows this. He doesn't have much interest in coaching college football. I was disappointed when I heard this but I still think there are quality coaches out there.

Thanks for taking the time to log on with that ridiculous username and share with us your expertise on the matter. I'm sure you were waiting for the right time to share information that those in the AD are not even aware of.

Great post. Anyway, who would you rather have total control - Jimmy The Cheek or Gruden?
Tampa Bay has an absolutely horrible owner whose only concern is with Manchester United, which is where all his dough goes.
I find it funny how the idiots who already think Gruden will fail were 100 percent on board when we hired a proven loser in Doofus Doolander. They somehow, someway thought he would turn into an instant winner. And Gruden will fail, huh? Morons.....

We were 7-6 with Kiffin.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if a coach has ever won a superbowl and a national championship as a hc for both? If it hasnt been done, maybe that's motivation enough for Gruden to sign. Thoughts?

Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer.

What College has produced two coaches with a total of 5 super bowl rings??

University of Dayton....

Gruden also cancelled his Alumni Dinner Speech scheduled for Saturday Night. Says he will be busy and can not make it. The first year he has ever missed the event. Chuck Noll is replacing him, who said..."I guess Jon has plans in Knoxville Saturday, so I was asked, last minute to replace him"!! That should give many an indication whats going on.

Boy, the state of Ohio puts out a lot of FB coaches. Stoops, Meyer and Gruden. That's just off my head.

I live in Dayton. Went to Dayton. That is not an Alumni Dinner I go to. Usually a big spender type thing. But I am in the know as far as UD is concerned, especially with those matters(honestly, it is pretty much general knowledge,). Wing-AM a local radio station also reported it. And I'm quite sure they called that info into the Animal in Knoxville. It's really more of a football alumni type dinner, Gruden hasnt missed it in years, well since he has been at ESPN anyway.

Personally, all the signs are there....His Son's transcripts are faxed to Knoxville Catholic, he is in East Tennessee this weekend for Thanksgiving, The Dayton cancel.....I would be in full watchout on Saturday......And Knoxville is not a far flight to Philly. I think we will know Saturday, or at least have a strong indication??

Gruden is competitive, bringing Tennessee back to the top is motivation enough for him. As for the remark about Gruden not liking to work with kids or raw talent, very wrong. Gruden runs the most famous quarterback clinic in the nation, where he works with recruits, not professionals. Also, He masterminded the west coast offense and is a defensive minded coach as well, rarely do you find both. So that informative essay that was written about Gruden being controlling, well we need some control in this program. We need leadership, we need recruiting and we need developing. It doesn't take a genuis to see that Gruden brings that complete package as a head coach. So to Bruce, I say your informative essay was misinformed and as usual your insider information is outside speculation.
