New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

I agree with that point all the way, there is no downside I'm a true vols fan for 46 years I would love for this to happen but I'm just keeping it real. Gruden wants to coach in the NFL not College, and Gruden has no College tack record except his QB pass club he does once a year

Well, for the record, Gruden stated in an interview with sports writers, found on, Jon Gruden Speaks At UT Coaching Clinic - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics, that he liked to coach at all levels, pro, college, or high school. In fact, he said he coached his son's high school offensive line last year.

It WAS the team that Tony Dungy built in Tampa Bay that gruden won the SB with and it takes lots longer to recruit and train NFL rookies and add some free agents to get the right team build that can win than it does to walk right in and take over a team that's already built for you except for a few players.

Gruden then went down, down, down until he was FIRED.

On the other hand Tony Dungy went to Indy and totally built another NFL team and WON a Superbowl for the Colts and he DID make it to 2 Superbowl which Gruden could never do.

I'd rather have Tony Dungy at Tennessee than Jon Gruden to be honest about it.

VFL...GBO!!!

I QUESS WE DISAGREE!!!:matrix:

also if dungy was so great why didnt he win 4 superbowls at indy? He should have had at least 3.

I heard a lot of talk today (99.1 Jimmy Hyams) saying he gives the chance of UT getting Gruden at 5%. Apparently Gruden wants full control of the football program and Hart is not willing to give him this. I hope this is wrong but that is the latest I heard.

What exactly is full-control of the program?

The NFL is just as tough as the SEC. Just sayin. I dont know how good he will be, but I think once youve won in the NFL it more than qualifies you to be a SEC coach.

Outside of a handful of NFL teams, (Giants, Bears, Packers.etc) I would think an SEC job is better.

Grudenites that bow down and worship him thrice daily are sure going to implode if AD Hart can't land him for UT.

LMAO @ no downside to Gruden, LOL!

The old man in Oakland sure was in a hurry to get rid of him and send him to Tampa Bay so he could get out of that contract, LOL.

Bucs owners gave him every chance in the world after he won the SuperBowl with Tony Dungys team and all Gruden did was destroy the Bucs consistently until he was FIRED.

What college was gruden the Head Coach at...NONE!

He has exactly ZERO experience as HC of any college team much less in the always brutal SEC.

There's so much hype, lies and total BS on here about Gruden that it totally amazes me.

I doubt if he'll come to Tennessee but if he does I'll support him 100% like i have all coaches of my beloved Vols for 50 years.

VFL...GBO!!!

Probably should watch a football game outside of the state of Tennessee. Davis traded Gruden because he wasn't winning the way he wanted to win. He took over Joe Bugel's 4-12 team & made Oakland a SB contender.

As for winning with 'Dungy's team', funny how Dungy couldn't win playoff games or late season cold weather games with his own team. Apparently, Gruden's leadership was the missing ingredient that got them over the top. Not to mention, it wasn't Gruden's fault that the Tampa owner went cheap & let their big name FA go while not bringing any in. Hard to win with the Shaun Kings & Chris Simms of the world in the NFL.

Has anyone seen Chris Dimino's tweet about the Stokely family and Peyton "fixing" UT? Said he's passing along bar talk but a man said Gruden has a 6 yr/38 mil contract with us in his pocket if I understand correctly. He's a radio personality in Atlanta. Interesting if nothing else.

Fuad Reveiz and Jimmy Hyams both just said Gruden is NOT coming to Tennessee. I hope they both are wrong and don't have any more info than I do.

That's right and Gruden even took them to the playoffs with Chris Simms.

I saw this! Sounds logical..wouldn't that put him slightly higher than the 6 mill that Saban makes???

Gruden is a good NFL coach, but he is far from a great coach. For those that have experienced the Gruden coaching system they know there is little chance he would ever coach at the college level. First, Gruden's system is incredibly complex and near impossible to learn for young professionals, let alone college aged kids that don;t have 80 hrs/wk to dedicate to the playbook. Second, Gruden's major weakness is at developing interpersonal relationships. Finding former players that will say something nice about the guy is harder than spotting bigfoot. Third, he has a history of destroying young talent. You will be hard pressed to name more than a handful of young players, drafted and developed by Gruden on offense. His successes in the league were with grizzled veterans. Fourth, he could not co-exist with a GM, let alone an AD. Gruden is a total control guy. There is no total control at the college level. Fifth, he would be a recruiting disaster. Sure, you could make the argument that some offensive players would be taken by his reputation and his work on ESPN, the reality is that he would be hard pressed to truly develop the relationships with high school coaches and parents necessary to find true success at recruiting to a big time program. Sixth, Gruden's agent is the master at floating rumors to keep Jon in the game, so to speak. There has not been a job opening at the the major college or pro level that Gruden's name has not been associated with, even though he was never a real candidate for any of them.

UT will be best served going after an experienced college coach that will bring character back into the program.

I had the same thoughts concerning his complex "verbage" for his offense. It's been reported that he has been studying the college game quite a bit the last few years so maybe he can change that a little. I also think he is probably a control freak....but so is Saban. Most great leaders/coaches are a little controlling. I also was concerned about his aggressiveness in his personality but after watching him do his QB show it seems he's learning to relate a little. He's been working with his son's HS football team so hopefully he's learned to tone it down a little. As a person grows, ages, and matures they tend to handle things differently and learn from mistakes so hopefully we'll see a new JG but the same great coach with the fire and passion that UT needs right now!!

^^^ Very excellent points my friend ^^^

Many die hard Grudenites are delusional it seems.

They've made up this false image of Gruden based mostly on his TV personality and their own dreams rather than solid facts.

Gruden did coach the Oakland Raiders and everyone that knows anything about the NFL and Oakland knows that owner/GM Al Davis (RIP) was a total control freak when it came to the players that were drafted or signed in Free Agency and he was nuts about numbers like 40 times and how far a QB could throw a ball, ect so sometimes he got really good players and other times he'd totally waiste his money on BUST players that were total failures like the former LSU QB, Russell I think his name was, that was a BUST from day 1.

If Gruden was such a great coach then WHY was Al Davis so happy and in a hurry to trade him to Tampa Bay?

If Gruden was such a great coach then Al Davis would have paid him any amount of money to keep him coaching in Oakland and would NEVER have traded him away so fast.

Al Davis helped teach and make Madden the great SuperBowl winning coach he became before he retired to TV and is so well known for his Madden video games.

I agree with many here that Gruden won't be the great savior that so many around here think he will be.

If AD Hart can hire him then I'll support him 100% like I have every coach for 50 years and I'll hope he can rebuild my beloved Vols back up to win another National Championship before I die.

VFL...GBO!!!

Just wondering where our coach is since some people on here said it was coming yesterday. Quit pretending y'all know - you're as clueless as I am.

We would be idiots not to take a chance on Gruden. He rebuilt the Raiders and he managed to coach TB to a Super Bowl title with a crap-arse offense. We would be idiots not to woo him here. Could he fail? Sure he could. I could also get hit by a bus tomorrow. Or a chunk of space satellite might impale me. You don't wring your hands in life and live in fear. GO FOR IT!!

Charlie Weis begs to differ, and he has 4 Super Bowl rings.

Saban, Spurrier, and Petrino aren't sure that's a given either.

Sometimes it just doesn't translate from pro to college or vice-versa.

Weis needs to drop to his knees and worship Bellicheck for those rings.

Does anybody know if anything's happening today? What's Dave Hart doing? Where is Jon Gruden? I've been under the impression that we'd have a hire in place by this evening.

May be wrong but I think Saban makes less than 6 mill. The numbers on his statement had to be wrong because that would put Gruden at the highest paid coach his first year ever coaching college football. I just hope he's right about Gruden coming.

Love Tony Dungy, living in Indy. However He (Gruden) took a Dungy team to win a Super Bowl that Dungy failed to do.
Dungy should have won 3-4 Super bowls at Indy, but did not. So that arguement does not hold water. :banghead2:
Gruden Has a Super Bowl Ring that would be awesome to use as Recruting. He has a passion to Coach younger men. I believe he would be great.:matrix:

Dungy is a great man and father, not convinced he's that great of a coach. In fact, I would argue he's a tad overrated as a coach.

This stuff has too familiar of a feeling. Im at the point that I don't think anyone knows more than I do, which is absolutely nothing. I will just wait and see not only who it is but how he and his staff do. Hopefully, the ones in charge know what they are doing, they havent shown any compitency up to this point.
