New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

Gruden will not be coming to UT unfortunately. Me along with everybody else that works in the athletic department at UT knows this. He doesn't have much interest in coaching college football. I was disappointed when I heard this but I still think there are quality coaches out there.

I might take you seriously except for one statement. Take away "along with everybody else that works in the athletic department at UT," and your sentence reads, "Me knows this."

I just don't see Jon Gruden being that committed to the Vols long term....more like a Lane Kiffin if anything.. yes Gruden would be good for the vols but we needs a good coach that would stay committed for years to come.

Me too...Me knows that Gruden wont be at Tennessee, ME had a talk with Gruden the other day and Me got a good idea that he wont be here...but me thinks we can land a quality coach

Anybody else hear 99.1 out of K-town say Gruden to be announced Sunday with 5 years / 30 mil?

I sure hope so Aerie Vol! We HAVE to land him! Anybody else will be a major disappointment, at least in my book. INSTANT results guys...INSTANT is the key word.

HONOR THY VOLS...CHERISH THEM...

Maybe you are right, maybe not. Regardless of his long-term commitment, there isn't a downside to hiring Gruden. He is nothing like Kiffen. Gruden would bring instant positive, I repeat positive, recognition. Also, He would be certain to stack the program with four and five star recruits, something we desperately need. Therefore, if he were to leave, he would be leaving us in great shape where another coach could come in without missing a beat. This would be a mirror of what happened twice at Florida when Spurrier left and when Meyers left. Also, when Tressle left Ohio state. That is if he did leave. There is no indication or past track record of that with Gruden. In short, there is no downside.

I heard a lot of talk today (99.1 Jimmy Hyams) saying he gives the chance of UT getting Gruden at 5%. Apparently Gruden wants full control of the football program and Hart is not willing to give him this. I hope this is wrong but that is the latest I heard.

Grudenites that bow down and worship him thrice daily are sure going to implode if AD Hart can't land him for UT.

LMAO @ no downside to Gruden, LOL!

The old man in Oakland sure was in a hurry to get rid of him and send him to Tampa Bay so he could get out of that contract, LOL.

Bucs owners gave him every chance in the world after he won the SuperBowl with Tony Dungys team and all Gruden did was destroy the Bucs consistently until he was FIRED.

What college was gruden the Head Coach at...NONE!

He has exactly ZERO experience as HC of any college team much less in the always brutal SEC.

There's so much hype, lies and total BS on here about Gruden that it totally amazes me.

I doubt if he'll come to Tennessee but if he does I'll support him 100% like i have all coaches of my beloved Vols for 50 years.

VFL...GBO!!!

The NFL is just as tough as the SEC. Just sayin. I dont know how good he will be, but I think once youve won in the NFL it more than qualifies you to be a SEC coach.

Charlie Weis begs to differ, and he has 4 Super Bowl rings.

Saban, Spurrier, and Petrino aren't sure that's a given either.

Sometimes it just doesn't translate from pro to college or vice-versa.

This is silly not to be a hater but i'd prob follow hubbs on this one. Hyams says no chance on Gruden but Hubbs says gotta see it to beleive it. I know for a fact some dude working at a gun shop LOL doesn't know anything and it's silly fellas if yall do too... and BCarter the guy could work at Dairy queen for all we know but lets trust this FREE SITE where bama fans and FLA fans can troll abound and not follow Brent Hubbs whose been the best forever, if i remember right it was this site that said Randy Shannon was coming to UT lol when Hubbs said all along nothing to it. Insiders let me ask u a question:

Hubbs said Hart has a lot of obstacles to sort through before interviewing candidates because he has to be able to know what to tell them in regards to athletic/academic divides.... YET you fellas say it's a done deal with Gru. So Gru could care less that Jimmy Cheek won't give him the total control he wants? That dude and the provost could care less about Gru and aren't going to let him "HAVE THE KEYS TO KNOX" .. just sayin'

We gotta at least try to see if he would come.:matrix:

Love Tony Dungy, living in Indy. However He (Gruden) took a Dungy team to win a Super Bowl that Dungy failed to do.
Dungy should have won 3-4 Super bowls at Indy, but did not. So that arguement does not hold water. :banghead2:
Gruden Has a Super Bowl Ring that would be awesome to use as Recruting. He has a passion to Coach younger men. I believe he would be great.:matrix:

Well this settles it... Gruden sucks.

It WAS the team that Tony Dungy built in Tampa Bay that gruden won the SB with and it takes lots longer to recruit and train NFL rookies and add some free agents to get the right team build that can win than it does to walk right in and take over a team that's already built for you except for a few players.

Gruden then went down, down, down until he was FIRED.

On the other hand Tony Dungy went to Indy and totally built another NFL team and WON a Superbowl for the Colts and he DID make it to 2 Superbowl which Gruden could never do.

I'd rather have Tony Dungy at Tennessee than Jon Gruden to be honest about it.

I must have missed the time when Charlie Weis, Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, or Bobby Petrino was the head coach of an NFL team that won the superbowl. My goodness man, those are the weakest comparisons ive ever seen. You cant be serious.

Just heard from a older man at the vol walk who has close ties to the program(president of UT was talking to him) that Gruden has an event in Ohio every year after Thanksgiving and this year he won't be attending and that hes in Knoxville. Thought I share with VN, hopefully this could turn out into something!!!! GBO

Someone else reported this information in another thread although I am having trouble tracking it down. Gruden graduated from the University of Dayton. I believe that your predecessor described the event to which you are both referring as an alumni event, so this may well be what your contact at the Vol Walk is talking about.

Yeah, a family member of mine was talking to the old guy and he called me. Just wanted to share some info

I agree with that point all the way, there is no downside I'm a true vols fan for 46 years I would love for this to happen but I'm just keeping it real. Gruden wants to coach in the NFL not College, and Gruden has no College tack record except his QB pass club he does once a year

That's quite all right. I finally located those other sources . . . and they were previous posts on this thread. Call it a brain cramp on my part. In any event, post no. 566 (douglas67) states:

"What College has produced two coaches with a total of 5 super bowl rings??

University of Dayton....

Gruden also cancelled his Alumni Dinner Speech scheduled for Saturday Night. Says he will be busy and can not make it. The first year he has ever missed the event. Chuck Noll is replacing him, who said...'I guess Jon has plans in Knoxville Saturday, so I was asked, last minute to replace him"!! That should give many an indication whats going on.'"

In post 571, the same source states that "I live in Dayton. Went to Dayton. That is not an Alumni Dinner I go to. Usually a big spender type thing. But I am in the know as far as UD is concerned, especially with those matters (honestly, it is pretty much general knowledge). Wing-AM a local radio station also reported it. And I'm quite sure they called that info into the Animal in Knoxville. It's really more of a football alumni type dinner, Gruden hasnt missed it in years, well since he has been at ESPN anyway."

Anyway, it would seem we're getting some consistency on this point. Or you may have just met douglas67.

The super bowl he won was against the Raiders, the team he coached for a few years before going to the Bucs. His Raider team was in the superbowl against his new Buccaneer team. To give Gruden no credit for that super bowl is beyond stupid.
Peyton Manning built a superbowl team and Tony Dungy happened to be coaching it.
