I still believe UT is a career job and not likely to be given to someone unless Dave Hart felt they planned on making it their career masterpiece.

I dont know if you guys heard but Duke extended Cutcliffe until 2019 because they had a fear he would come back to Knoxville if they did'nt...I'd love Cut to come back, but I knew it would'nt happen. I hope he continues his success at Duke and perhaps down the road we can have a home and home with the Blue Devils.

Yeap I saw that. Good point.

I dont really like him as much as I like him fitting the criteria that Dave Hart might be looking for.
Good point, I also kinda wish they'd interview a mid major coach with BCS experience like a Frank Solich or a George O'Leary, at least to make the job seem more competitive, but no dis to Solich, I would'nt mind if we hired Solich, he's turned Ohio around and had a average to good run at Nebraska.

Sadly that 1-0 record is against Kensucky lol, it would be impressive if Chaney could turn the fact that hes technically 1-0 at Tennessee into a BCS school gig.:salute:

Just going out on a limb, but would it be a foregone conclusion to keep him on as Offensive Coordinator? I mean, people are surely happier with him than everyone else on the soon-unemployed coaching staff, and ultimately it will be the new coach's decision. But our offense has had success this year, way more than any other side of the ball. I wouldn't cast Mr. Chaney's attempts aside just yet.

I'm definitely not opposed to the next HC keeping Chaney as OC, Offense was definitely not our glaring weakness this year, between head coach, defense and special teams the Offense were the superstars of this campaign. It's up to the new HC if Chaney stays as OC, but I'm surely not opposed to him keeping the OC post. Maybe we hire an older experienced Coach for a few years to show Chaney the ropes and keep him on as OC/Coach in Waiting, that could be a very ideal situation. It's worked for Jimbo Fisher at Florida State. BTW anyone else heard the rumor that Mack Brown could be offering Chizik his coordinator gig back in Austin?

Personally, I would love to see Gary Patterson come in and keep Chaney and most of the offensive staff.

I'm with you. I just don't know if Patterson will make the move. He has TCU rolling.

Also, another thing that we have to be patient on is the best coaches are involved in a bowl game so we have to wait until their game is over to make a serious offer to one of those coaches.

Chip Kelly, Jeff Tedford and Dennis Erickson keep mentioned on other UT message boards i peruse

Another one ive toyed with is Watson Brown at TN Tech, he could do just fine at UT, he did almost get us in 05 when he was coaching at UAB...maybe you hired him for 2-3 years let him show Chaney the ropes of a HC and then he turns it over to Chaney, that could set a lot of stability up for the program and bring back recruits....thoughts?

I meet Watson Brown last year. He said he came back home to be close to his parents. Seems like one may have been ill or something. He has been in football a long time and had some cool stories. I liked him. I don't know if he would want the job.

No

Why not? Stability a bad thing? Don't be a Colorado or Oregon fan, you know why neither ever wins the big one? Too many hippies afraid of commitment and stability to undermine the goals of the program...if you're going to say No at least say why Watson Brown wouldnt be a good transition if anyone felt Chaney could be a permanent head coach in the future. I don't want to win every game unless we're going to have a stable foundation for the program to grow and flourish on, or you get what we got after the Fulmer firing...a 7-6 season and 3 epic fails under a coach we basically hired at 11:59 before the coach turned into a pumpkin. Stability is going to be a big factor in the recovery of the program, Watson Brown transistioning to James Chaney could very well lay the foundation for a vibrant, flourishing return to the ranks of the elite we all truly want this program to return to.

Why isn't anyone talking about Jon Gruden? Wouldn't he be a good hire?

Jon Gruden would be an excellent hire. And honestly, at this point, Gruden has been hyped up throughout the Vol community for a while now, if he's not considered it yet, I think he should take a glimpse. That is to say that everyone who has implicated that he has already accepted the job, and we're just pending announcement about it, is wrong. Just too easy to talk about now, I'm afraid. Point blank, the HC job at UT is not as attractive as it may have been 5-10 years ago. This is the main reason people are crying for Gruden, Peterson, Strong, Petrino (for God's sakes), etc..., is because it is easier to hype up the job for our team when we believe it is worthy of a big name. Dooley's tenure proved one thing: we've got some work to do. Quite honestly, we would be better off hiring a HC who may not have such a big name or tenure in the BCS coaching scheme. Dooley was almost immediately shadowed at UT because of his dad's popularity in the SEC (UGA). Maybe someone it won't be so easy to not blame if we lose for another 3 years, or who we can pin the "Cinderella Story" on if they happen to pull out a couple of winning seasons. Just a thought...
