New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

Another one ive toyed with is Watson Brown at TN Tech, he could do just fine at UT, he did almost get us in 05 when he was coaching at UAB...maybe you hired him for 2-3 years let him show Chaney the ropes of a HC and then he turns it over to Chaney, that could set a lot of stability up for the program and bring back recruits....thoughts?

Is this the worst post ever or what?

I do think that Dave Hart probably has more ambishes plans. Especially when he is looking at selling tickets while creating stability.

Dungy is the only big name coach who I would say probly wouldnt run out for money or another job, hes a man of carachter, if were going to pursue a big name and create stabilty, Dungy would be a 100% perfect fit in that regard, the problem i have with the lists is outside of Frank Solich not one of these guys has ever coached in a college football championship game. Just some food for thought, NFl Coach doesent mean great college coach, for every June Jones great success story theres a Bill Callahan or a Dave Wannstedt 10 feet away, Lets not ignore the elephant in the room, we have no Idea where Hart is going to get the next coach from, speculation is always fun, I hope we all continue to speculate and have fun with the posts. BTW Sonny Dykes...really? didnt Dooley teach us we dont want another Coona** Tech coach?

I hope and pray that Hart is going after a bigger name and a more proven recruiter. If not he may as well hire Brentwood academy highschool coach and save a wad if cash!

Yes, probaly will move Sonny Dykes to my not realistic list. It's not a knock on him. Just the circumstances.

If Hart were to hire someone like Watson Brown he wouldn't be run out of town, he would be shot from a cannon.

I'm just using Watson Brown as an exampe of a guy who's near the age to retire they could use to mentor Chaney for a couple years then turn the reigns loose to Chaney...is it better if i say Mack Brown?

Jon Gruden would be an excellent hire. And honestly, at this point, Gruden has been hyped up throughout the Vol community for a while now, if he's not considered it yet, I think he should take a glimpse. That is to say that everyone who has implicated that he has already accepted the job, and we're just pending announcement about it, is wrong. Just too easy to talk about now, I'm afraid. Point blank, the HC job at UT is not as attractive as it may have been 5-10 years ago. This is the main reason people are crying for Gruden, Peterson, Strong, Petrino (for God's sakes), etc..., is because it is easier to hype up the job for our team when we believe it is worthy of a big name. Dooley's tenure proved one thing: we've got some work to do. Quite honestly, we would be better off hiring a HC who may not have such a big name or tenure in the BCS coaching scheme. Dooley was almost immediately shadowed at UT because of his dad's popularity in the SEC (UGA). Maybe someone it won't be so easy to not blame if we lose for another 3 years, or who we can pin the "Cinderella Story" on if they happen to pull out a couple of winning seasons. Just a thought...

It doesn't matter who the coach is if he can't compete we don't need him. Tennessee is listed by ESPN as the best job and quickest turn around. Now I realize that will not mean competing for the NC in year one. But it does mean show progress to the road to prominence again. At this point, whoever it is I will support and give them a shot. It's a tough place in the SEC and we need a tough coach who knows how to recruit and how to win. Many on here don't like Franklin, however, he has done just that with Vandy in just two years. Any thing less than that should be unacceptable at UT.

the only "shadow" dooley had to worry about was the shadow of his incompetence, something roughly as striking as a total solar eclipse.

I watched the Dan Patrick Show this morning. He doesn't think Jon Gruden has any real interest in coaching any college team. He said by acting as though he had interest he can drive his price up while negotiating a price to return to the NFL and coach.

If that is the case, who is out there that is available better than Petrino to turn a program around fast.
I don't know but I sure don't want a bad hire and have Dooley ball for 3-4 seasons.

If we don't get Gruden, I'd really like for Hart to make Patterson a very serious offer. Strong, Golden, and a lot of these other names just don't excite me very much.

Listened to 680 The Fan in Atlanta today, and while this may be old news, They said it was actually Gruden's agent that contacted Tennessee to express Grudens interest in the position, not Tennessee contacting Gruden. Im not sure what to think of this, but If your a Gruden fan, this might make you worry a bit on whether or not Tennessee is considering him a SERIOUS candidate.

Yes,thats what Dan Patrick said agents do in order to drive the price up for some NFL team. He said Gruden has no real interest, he wants another NFL gig.

Im not sure what to believe. It's hard for me to believe he has NO interest, but Im not sure either way. Alot of the "rumors" I have checked out, and there are a few that seem to point toward genuine interest. I guess if it were me in his shoes, It would be a tough call for me as well...Tennessee or NFL?

Personally, I like Gruden. I have some concerns about his lack of College experience, but think he would do well. Stoops was quoted today as saying he was happy at Oklahoma, and has no plans of leaving. SO if no Gruden, and no Stoops, Who do you all think is REALISTIC?:victory:

The UT brand has been hurt by the last 2 coaches. Not long ago when you thought of UT, you would rate then at or near the top of the SEC. Now the experts are saying Auburn is a slightly better job. Neyland holds what 106,000 and a huge passionate fan base. This hire is a make or break. You don't want a half empty stadium and football that compares to lowly UK.

Maybe it is best to get a guy proven in college. I have heard several speaking of Grudens lack of patience and expects pro like players.

How much confidence does everyone have in Hart finding THE MAN to bring the Vols back to prominance?

Live in the Tri Cities area. WJHL just reported that Gruden's agent informed Tennessee that Gruden wanted to be part of the Athletic Department Decision Makers and wanted to be an Assistant AD. Said Hart refused to even consider this idea.-Reported by Kenny Hawkins

To be honest, not concerned with his ability to find them, but reeling them in, and on top of that, setting them up in the best possible position to succeed, is up in the wind.

I don't have a good feeling about Hart. He's a control freak and not a team player. He's known as a maverick who wants to go his own way. I can see where he would want to curtail the HC's power and restrict decisionmaking. IF Gruden wants to coach college and he doesn't come to UT, Hart's need to control will be the dealbreaker, not money, IMO.
