New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

Gruden will be worth whatever we pay him. I'm sure you've heard it all before, but think about it. He would light a fire under our program's recruiting that no other coach could. He could assemble a Godly coaching staff with his connections all around the football world, and I guarantee he would be worth the buck. Bring him in. He is what we need.

Can someone please explain to me the logic or appeal of Jon Gruden coaching Tennessee?

That's really two different questions. Appeal-He is a celebrity that also has had some football success. Plus he is likeable. Logic I don't think it actually makes any sense from a university standpoint. Except for the one exception. Selling tickets. However, with what we would be paying him that's a big risk. Say in 3 years he hasnt caught on to being a college coach and we have to pay his buyout, too.

However, I think what we like the best as fans is if Gruden did come to UT and was successful. It would be like the Nick Saban effect at AL.

Yes, it would be ashamed to see Gruden come in here and fill the roster with five star recruits, because he could. It would be ashamed if after three years our roster was composed of a roster comparing to USC and Alabama because it would be. For most every young recruit to want to play for Gruden would also be "risky" too. I am sure some more suitable prospect like Golden would appease you more. After all you are accustomed to losing and losers and you obviously don't want to change that. A risk to hire the mastermind of the west coast offense who is also a defensive coach. A risk to hire a proven superbowl champion with the nation's most notorious quarterback clinics, not to mention an anchor broadcaster on MNF. Yes, Yes risky, because kids would come. But more comfortable is a coach like Golden who is a proven loser and mirrors Dooley, sure to fail. Thats not risky because we don't pay him as much for certain failure. Or, perhaps you could give me a name who is less of a risk from a university stand point. Just one available name

Who do you like best out of Strong, Jones, and Briles?

Strong has the best resume. I would consider all three of them a failure hire at UT. Butch Davis would be much better and willing to come. He has more experience and better NFL contacts, and a proven recruiter. Jones has only had moderate success in the Big East, which would equate to failure in the Sec and Briles only accomplishment is one 10 win season at Baylor and a stunt with Texas Tech. I don't see this as a homerun hire either.

I think all of that would be awesome and would be all about it. Who would argue against it? The risk I am talking about is the university paying him 5 million or so to coach. That is a lot of risk for them right now. Anything could happen. For example he leave for an NFL team in a year or be a bad college coach.

Gruden would be an excellent hire and a necessary hire IMHO. He knows how to win and win big games. If Hart pulls this off and signs him, I guarantee 5 star recruits will want to sign because he has such a good name in NFL and would run a Pro style football team that would make new recruits and current players on the roster more NFL ready. Also, his star power would attract any teenager wanting to play big time football and resurrect UT's once famous drawing power for kids to play for a college football powerhouse.

But he hasnt coached in college since the early 90's and at all in almost 5 years!! There is no way in hell an NFL guy like Gruden who isnt known for his man management skills can hack the college life where he has to kiss ass to recruit and has much less time to work with his players. I do not see any appeal in him and it would be a huge waste of money and time for Tennessee. Sooner he takes the Eagles job the quicker a lot of you can get back to reality.

Just got a test that Mark Stoops has been named our new coach and Tim Couch was involved in the selection process.

I don't get it?? Many people seem to feel if we hire anyone OTHER than Gruden it is a fail hire? I dont mind Gruden, but was he done lately? Their are guys busting their asses in the NFL coaching, that he has the luxery in hindsight to critique. Yea, he breaksdown film well, right now Gruden is no different than alot of us, ARMCHAIR COACH. Yes, he would bring talent, the question, how well would he develop the talent? And Kiffen brought a great staff, how well did that work out? Personally, I thought Oregon was way overblown, and a blowhard, he deserves a stiff kick to the nuts if you ask me.

Then I hear Butch Davis or Bobby Petrino......2 guys who have a history of bolting when **** gets rough or there is a better oppurtunity....alot like Kiffen. Unlike Kiffen, They will win, but they will also leave a program in shambles....examples..Miami, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Louisville.

Baylor is a Basketball school. Alot of budget goes to Basketball. Art Briles has not only won there, he beat the number 1 team in the country. How many people really heard of RG3 before he won the Heisman? So we know he can develop players, he also did this, kicking some slackers out of Baylor for **** they shouldnt be doing. He also won at Houston, traditionally not a Football school.

June Jones, there has not been a single mention of this guy. He use to play QB in the NFL, Atlanta to be precise, you dont think he knows people? He took SMU to a Bowl Game.....SMU....And didnt do bad at Hawaii. So lets see.....one of our top Heisman candidates is from where??? There are 7 NFL starters from what State? And, knowing people from the south, from a recruiting standpoint is a plus? Wow, who fit that bill?

To think if one or two men DON't get this job it is a fail hire? There are some good coaches out there, that would love to coach with our facilities, budget, and fan support, and given the oppurtunity, they would do well. We hired Kiffen way to soon, Hamilton caved in to fan pressure, and it cost this program dearly. I'm glad Hart is staying quiet, I'm convinced he will hire the right guy......And to be a Tennessee fan, you should hope he interviews more than one or two guys, C'mon, we are better than that. Do you think Hart said to himself, "well if Gruden or Petrino are not available were ****ED"??? C'mon....There are a number of guys out there qualified to this job, don't pin hopes on 1 or 2, that's crazy!!

RGIII wins the heisman so that instantly makes your boy Art, a developer of talent?

Let me see??? How many Heisman winners we had at UT?? And Compare the draft picks from Baylor the last three years compared to UT. Im not sure what the number is, but its alot more than weve had. Now, that being said we were ripped two Heisman winners(Manning and Majors), but I do remember a time UT was a breeding ground for the NFL....Not no more. Knock my guys all you want. But im not just throwing household names out there. Its easy to grumble Gruden's, Petrinos, Davis', its more difficult to look for guys who will actually turn your program around and be here for 10-15 years. That's what we need, somebody committed, unlike Kiffen.

go vols.com. looks like gruden is looking at eagles and fisher and stoops are happy where they are at.
Doesn't EVERY successful coach say he is happy where he is while his team is still playing. I would no eliminate anyone just yet. How many Coaches have left for greener pastures only days after making these kind of comments.

I have not really gotten excited about Stoops. I don't think he's a good fit.

I read Fisher's comments. They sound like pretty standard denial from a coach that might well still be a candidate but has an important game coming up and doesn't want his team distracted. Maybe I didn't get the whole response but I never saw where he said he wouldn't consider a move.

Being "happy" and all that really says nothing at all. I told the interviewers at my current company that I was satisfied with my last job. I was. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't as good or as lucrative as my current job. But it had many pluses. I would not have been terribly disappointed if I had not gotten an offer. However I did get an offer that I couldn't say no to that included a 20% pay increase.

Bottom line: Saying you like your current job says NOTHING about whether you would consider a different job... and especially if it involved more money. I don't care about Stoops. Gruden is amusing but I'm not biting until its real. But Fisher... I don't think he's out AT ALL.

Just about every one of the good ones that have moved. Meyer did. Saban did. Spurrier did. Rich Rod did. I don't believe I can think of a good one that didn't.

true has been known to happen.
