New forum: Coaching Rumors and Speculation

Let me see??? How many Heisman winners we had at UT?? And Compare the draft picks from Baylor the last three years compared to UT. Im not sure what the number is, but its alot more than weve had. Now, that being said we were ripped two Heisman winners(Manning and Majors), but I do remember a time UT was a breeding ground for the NFL....Not no more. Knock my guys all you want. But im not just throwing household names out there. Its easy to grumble Gruden's, Petrinos, Davis', its more difficult to look for guys who will actually turn your program around and be here for 10-15 years. That's what we need, somebody committed, unlike Kiffen.

Not sure where to start with this one. Both Baylor and Tennessee currently have 9 players in the NFL from the last three years, so theres that.

I don't have a problem with the names you mentioned except for the fact that they do not belong on Tennessee's short list. Tennessee is in a crucial stage right now and as many media members and former players have mentioned this hire is the most important in program history. Unlike previous hires, the money is on the table and regardless of what you may think a "household name" is needed. We can't afford to bring in a coach that is going to take 4+ years to rebuild our program.

Ok, thats fair. 9 players each. Since when does Baylor produce as many NFL players as UT. If you would have told me that 5 years ago, I wouldv'e laughed.

I understand where the University is at right now. The school itself is in deep despair right now. God forbid the Football program be in Dire Straits. The coaches I have mentioned were guys we can get financially fair and who will take the program forward. It might take 4-5 years, we might have to be "Johnny Majors" fair in this process. We may have to suck it up, and like others have said, win a few were not suppose to, but win the ones were suppose to. The last thing we need is a guy to come in here make $4.5-$6.0 million a year and NOT have success! That wont do the program any good, and it certainly wont help the school. You saw what happen with the last homerun hire, we had a Division 2 coach at best, fill in for him in the last 3 years of his contract. I dont want another Kiffen.....personally, Gruden is not coming here. Davis and Petrino are Kiffen types, you cant trust them, and the cost will be enourmous. I haven't mentioned any NFL OC's or DC's, their might be something out there in that realm.

Hell man, I dont know. I love UT football, I love the institution, I love Tennessee. I want the right hire, but I want it to be fair. And the right guy I'm willing to give 4 years to make it happen.

Let me present this scenario: Say we would go:

2013 7-5 with a bowl win to go 8-5
2014 8-4 with a bowl loss to go 8-5
2015 9-3 with a bowl win to go 10-3

That's 26-13...with say a few big wins over Florida, Georgia, and say maybe a Oregon type win. But of course winning all the games we should win.

Is that acceptable in the next three years?

Just asking.

No , not acceptable for Gruden . NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 2014 , 15 , 17 , Its Time

So lets say we got him? Why in the hell didn't this happen three effin years ago? And does anybody know if he can put together a SEC quality staff that understands the game? (SEC>NFL btw)

I am still worried about this hire. But willing to go out on a limb and say I am happy with a hire like this. FINALLY (still want Phil back)

Acceptable? Just compare your scenarios to 6 of the past 7 years, under the Dooley debacle, the Kiffin probation, and the dinosaur Fulmer years. Rome wasn't built in a day, and recovering in the SEC after the worst U.T. records in history could be equally tough.

I'm not sure it is even legal for this to happen? Would the NCAA even allow this to happen? Moreover, why would you deny a report, yet create more questions? I think the whole scenario has been explored by all parties involved, I just think this would give a HUGE recruiting advantage to UT. I mean just imagine Gruden sitting at your dining room table, he could recruit you to UT, and push the Browns at the same time?

Of course, Jon Gruden would have to shoot down these reports. First, it is a confict within his payout from Tampa and it is an NCAA violation if he were to become coach of the Vols. I truly believe that he side-stepped any answer regarding becoming the coach of the Vols. Until the University comes out and makes a statement about Gruden, it is still in the works. I do believe that, if Gruden has declined the opportunity, then UT needs to make a statement to help heal all the disappointment of him not being our coach. It is the only way that the next coach will get the support he deserves when they announce him.

Okay, so does anyone have a clue who Channel 3's source is? I'm curious, it has to be something concrete for them to report he has contract in hand as a fact...

I believe he is capable of putting a successful coaching staff together for SEC play, he has coached in this conference before although it was long ago. I also believe him to be a grand slam hire. However, there are also a couple of candidates that I believe could also bring the program back, although probably not as quickly. However, Al Golden is not one of them. Just hope we get a great fit for UT, whoever it may be. I personally think the Gruden hire is a real possibility and He will most likely be the next coach at UT.

The new coach will get the support he needs from U.T. fans, just like division II Derek Dooley did......unless the new coach is perceived as being of the same caliber and lack of credentials as Dooley. But, the coaching search is being done by Hart and perhaps other influential alumni vs. the last, so-called, search led by the "lightweight," clueless Mike Hamilton. Hart said not to panic, so we'll see how it ends. Couldn't end any worse than the Dooley selection.

Gruden on ESPN Mike and Mike seemed pretty frustrated with the rumors and said there was no truth in the Channel 3 report.

I think we better prepare ourselves to be disappointed. I've heard more recently about Gruden's interest in the Eagles or Chargers. I just think he's an NFL guy and if a good job in the NFL comes along we can forget it. There will be good jobs in the NFL come available soon. Hope I'm wrong.

I was also told from multiple sources that if Gruden would be hired to Tennessee with a solid staff, Johnny Manziel would look into a possible transfer to the University of Tennessee

I was told that if we do not get gruden we are going after Austin Peay HC to strategically ensure a win in wk 1 next year. Good lord this is ridiculous
