General rules concerning coaching candidate denials:
1) Few ever know for sure who was offered, who was wanted, who wanted the job, etc... the whole system is designed so that everyone saves face. In the end, both the school and new coach will assure everyone that it was love at first sight with no othera considered.
2) Only a concrete "I am not and will not be a candidate for this job" can be considered a "denial".... and even then rule 3 applies.
3) Things change... sometimes within minutes. A firm denial can turn into a handshake in a flash.
Believe nothing. Disbelieve nothing. Don't get your hopes up but don't let your hopes diminish to nothing. I will not be surprised if Gruden smiles at the camera on MNF over the next 3 weeks and says "Effective December 18th I will be the Head Coach of the Volunteers". I will not be surprised if some unknown is announced between now and the 10th of December.
If it does not happen next week... then you can brighten your outlook on Gruden... or dim your outlook that UT will get a high profile guy. Everyone on "the list" will be finished with their regular season after this weekend except Gruden. The sooner after that a currently active coach tells his team and starts his new job... the better for everyone.
Thank you for excellent perspective. Also, have patience. Before any hire is made official, Hart is going to that conference in NYC. Until that is done, everyone needs to follow Hart's advice, and take a deep breath. Nothing is going to happen until after December 4. Be thankful it is him, and not Hamilton running this.
I know this much; whoever we get is going to be a helluva lot better than what we have had in the past. As much as I like Dooley as a man, he couldn't manage a game of tiddly winks. Hopefully, we are gonna get a guy who can 1 manage all facets of the game, can 2 bring in not only five star players, but develop the three and four star kids as well. 3 oversee position coaches and coordinators to insure the Vols, whether they win or lose, fight their asses off every damn play. I don't just hope for that, I freakin demand it. And 4 someone who can make us proud of all that without getting us in the crapper with the NCAA.
Now what do all us folks do that love the Vols do once this decision is made? In my opinion, whether it be Gruden, Strong, Malzahn, Peterson, Patterson, Golden, or any other competent coach that Hart and the powers that be bring in, if we see him out at a restaurant, at west town mall, or wherever, give the man a fist pump, and let him know he is appreciated for coming in to save our program. Whoever it is let's get behind the man. Let's make the whole world know what each of us know in their hearts; The University of Tennessee Volunteers is the greatest place in the universe for college football. To hell with Southern :finger3: Cal, to hell with Ala :finger3: bama, to hell with Flor :finger3: ida and Florida :finger3: State, THE :yuck: Ohio State, :machgun: Michigan, Notre :stinker2: Damn, and all those other idiots. WE ARE TENNESSEE.
