Nichols committed to Memphis?

It's weird that Duke fans support Nichols to Memphis and were against him attending UT. Reading some of the comments on their scout board is quite surprising, you would think the 2 schools were rivals.

I'm sure Nichols didn't pick Memphis for the academics. They're the worst school out of the schools he was choosing from. If he is as good as advertised, he won't be there long enough to get a degree anyway.

That's just it, I don't think he is. I've watched him play for years. Good fundamental player but never understood the hype. Let 'em have him and move on.

I'll just say that this was a shocking and disappointing decision. Memphis will be the worst BCS school for academics when they join the Big East, and Nichols' sister and buddy Hubbs (hopefully) will both be at UT. That said, Memphis is his home, and they have a consistently strong basketball program, despite having a coach who's learning on the job. Definitely not a bad decision to play basketball at Memphis, but it was shocking, considering the advantages UT had in this recruitment, and the apparent fact that UT led throughout the process.

IMO, Memphis is obviously established there. UT has not had luck in the area and Duke has. Getting Stokes, Hubbs, and Nichols is huge and could open it up for UT. The last thing you want is another team establishing a pipeline when there is already a major player there. It's just bad all around for Duke or Memphis.

BUT, Duke is Duke. They shouldn't worry about where we get players. 9 out of 10 times, we aren't competiting with Coach K on the recruiting trail so they should shut up.

This could be the answer to the question "Why?"
From By Paul Biancardi | ESPN RecruitingNation, 11-05-12:

"According to Nichols' father, staying home and Nichols' familiarity with the program became the deciding factors. Nichols played for the same AAU program as Crawford and King, participated in the Under Armour Elite 24 showcase with Iverson and teamed up with current Memphis freshman Shaq Goodwin on the USA Basketball U18 National Team training camp roster this past summer.

'At the end of the day, Austin wanted to stay at home and play with some talented guys who he knew very well,' Mark Nichols said."

This is one of your most "in the know" and educated guys we have on Tennessee basketball...he's talking basketball and Nichols, here's some notes:

- questions if Austin's parents where giving off accurate info the entire time

- said Nichols informed staff when he left Alabama weekend he was a Vol

- says Tennessee had J3, but it was one or the other and they parted with J3 because they felt they had Nichols.

- says CCM will learn a lesson on who you can and can not trust in Memphis with legitimate info

- expects staff to maybe look to the foreign ranks for a European type of guy like WV just pulled

- says they've monitored Keanu Post and Luke Cothron in the JUCO ranks

- says Tracy Webster is a pro at this, the staff will have no trouble finding someone, the question will just be landing then

- thinks Maymom is out much longer than the 3-4 weeks reported

- says Nicodemus is worth every penny and may be the best hire CCM has made. Thinks Golden, Yemi and Stokes are in amazing shape.

The ole shoebox full of money eh..........

The Nichols are pretty well off.

It's this simple. His parents wanted him to stay home. They didn't want him to leave and go six hours away.

He listened to his parents.

Bingo. I figured this is exactly what happend. Sucks that Martin got screwed after investing so much time. It sounds like Nichols played the whole staff. Very dirty of the kid...

I was honestly worried when I read that the family decided to cut off all coaches for the last week before deciding, because he lives in Memphis (I think). So, that's a full week of being surrounded by Memphis fans in Memphis, with CCM, and Coach K (FWTW), no longer in his ear. I don't know if it affected the outcome, but UM probably got the last word in without it having to come from Pastner.

Yep, that's what he did. That was his intention from the beginning. Geeeeeeez :loco:

I don't know that it was Nichols...if I had to guess from everything I've been told by multiple sides of the equation...

Austin wanted to come to UT, Austin informed the staff he was coming here and mom and dad let that ride. When it came down to decision time though, it was either dads way Duke, or moms way Memphis..and seeing as how he didnt feel at home at Duke, and doesn't want to be that far away, the decision was easy.

As someone said earlier, Momma got what she wanted. Moms usually do.

To quote Dooley and Bruce Hornsby: That's just the way it is...

Yawn. Move on. Like a broken hearted teenager.

Think he surprised Hubbs too.
Was tweeting Saturday that he was playing against his soon to be team mate.
Shocking news.

I read that also.Maybe Hubbs is backpedaling now that he sees Tenn isnt getting Austin and J3 like he thought they were.

As for Luke Cothron, that guy has to run out of eligibility someday. As far as I can tell, Cothron is from Alabama, played at two different North Carolina prep schools, committed to NC State, signed with Auburn, enrolled briefly at UMass, played six minutes in one game for the University of New Orleans, went to Southern Idaho for a season, and now is moving on to Northwest Florida to play for Steve Forbes. He can't have more than one season left, can he?
