i have a friend who is a teacher (very liberal btw) in a predominately white town in southern california. she's estimates that 75% of the students are either illegal immigrants or children of illegal immigrants who come in speaking almost no english.

How does she find something like that out?

There was probably a better way to handle this. However, anybody who thinks that this was simply those students showing "pride" in their American citizenship, as opposed to taunting the students of Mexican heritage, is a complete idiot.

And the APOLOGIST arrives

LOL. "Overly simplistic" eh. That's the problem sir, it is that simple but too many people refuse to treat it as such. Like I said, the proper answer to someone *****ing about an American flag worn by an American in America is "Shut up and deal with it."

This isn't a discussion on the mens rea of the wearers but the incredible audacity that these people felt they had a right to be "offended" in the first place and the utterly inexplicable complicity of the school officials to that end.

I agree entirely with your point, but seems to me that the administration of the school is simply trying to preempt the fight pickers.

It is absolute trash to tell an American not to wear his flag, regardless of the jingoism at play.

Yeah, I didn't gradeeate 3rd grade.

Let me be more specific for you: How does she look at all her Latino students and divine that approximately 3/4 are illegal?

what difference does it make. She's estimating based upon the fact that she works in that school system, which doesn't require her to live in a bubble. They actually let her talk to other teachers and administrators. Sounds crazy 'cause that dastardly Patriot Act supposedly took away all of our rights, but in some specific places people still get to interact, even if only telepathically.

common sense? notice i said "children of illegal" as well. which means the kids are citizens. if you get a kid (she teaches preschool) who doesn't speak a lick of english and whose parents dont' speak a lick of english is it really ridiculous to think they might not be here legally? and you are also assuming hte kids don't tell her thier parents are here illegally. trust me there is no shame about being illegal in southern california.

Cinco de mayo isn't a holiday in Mexico. It's really just a drinking holiday.

The kids that were offended an the kids that wore the shirts are all idiots.

Exactly!! Only the state of Puebla, other than the idiots in the U.S. actually celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Hell, most dont even know what they are celebrating.

Also, F anyone that doesnt like the Stars and Stripes. Ship their useless asses back if they dont appreciate what that flag stands for and the men and women who have sacrificed to defend it.

I have had about enough of this PC crowd.

We agree.

For some reason, however, droski seems to want to give the flag-wearing students a pass for their own actions, which I don't want to do.

Does not mean they can't wear it and on May 5 if they choose. Just saying let's be realistic about the point of it.

Common sense? Really? So you can look at 30 white kids and divine how many are Irish or Scottish or German illegals? Seriously, it's stupid unless she has something to base the estimate on. That's all I'm saying.

For the record, I totally disagree with what the principle did. The kids should be able to wear an American flag shirt any time they wish. Period.

from a guy who went to public school in southern california, i can ensure you i would not have worn a US flag if i thought it would seriously piss off the mexicans at the school. not unless i had a death wish.

If there had been any indication of the flag wearers actively trying to incite anything it would absolutely come into play. The problem is that the school officials, like LG is wont to do, seem to divine what somebody is thinking and then decide what action is justifiable based on these opinions. The problem is that the opinions are fabricated and the actions taken are real.

No disagreement from me on that. But could you safely assume they were illegal immigrants?

Come on... Don't let the obsession to be politically correct get in the way of common sense.

this is stupid, the only people that would have an argument about being offended by the American flag are native americans, and thats only if you wore it in on their reservation. this uber PC crowd needs to grow some thick skin and stop thinking their rights are more important then the rights of others
