No US Flag on Mexican Holiday??

I'm not advocating some slippery slope here. I'm simply saying that I understand and that this isn't some earth shattering suppression event.

For the record, yes there are some militant style shirts that shouldn't be worn in our public schools. Drawing the line is difficult, but you can't be cool with throwing out Che because he's offensive then gripe that the flag isn't.

For the record, I think the kid should be able to wear a Che shirt, even though I hate them. That is his right of expression, but I will also express how ignorant he is to his face.

That's the American way. Let people express themselves freely.

from a guy who went to public school in southern california, i can ensure you i would not have worn a US flag if i thought it would seriously piss off the mexicans at the school. not unless i had a death wish.

Ergo the principal taking the action he did. He was objectively wrong to do so, but it is apparent what he was worried about.

On the other hand, the students were objectively correct to have been wearing the flag, while their own subjective motivation was poor.

I wonder what your opinion is of the fact that anyone is free to desecrate the flag including burn it in this country. The First Amendment allows for it, so why is it not ok for someone to wear the American Flag on a shirt, even if it is to protest another flag or someone's heritage?

First the Stars and Bars, now the Stars and Stripes......I think ultimately the only flag that an American can fly will be a SOLID WHITE ONE!

you don't think it's disturbing that he is worried about offending people by wearing an american flag in a public school? doesn't that tell you that public education is no longer concerned with educating american citizens?

You missed my earlier posts. I agree that they are free to do it and I agree the principal was wrong to send them home.

As far as freedom of speech in schools, I guess the Supreme Court has ruled that students don't have it, but it's the issue with political correctness that terrifies me.

It is not even an important holiday...my mexican colleagues tell me the manufacturer of Corona made it popular, even in Mexico.

Cinco De Mayo isn't even celebrated in Mexico, in the US it's just an excuse to get drunk.

Some guys that I work with told me that it does exist, and that Corona trumped it up...it just doesn't exist as quite the party it does here. It's something that is largely ignored and was a much more successful endeavor in the US than in Mexico on the makers of Corona's part. I have no first-hand knowledge, though, just some guys from Mexico City answering my questions at a departmental Cinco de Mayo party :).

all this crap because the Mexicans beat the French in a single battle during a war in which they ultimately lost.
