Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Thanks! So many good teams at the top. IMO this is an interesting challenge for Dawn. This is the year she really reinvents, being without the star big in the middle. May be very freeing for her, we'll see.

A concensus is taking shape that the top 5 teams in the SEC are SoCar, Texas, LSU, Okla, and Alabama. Can't argue w that on paper. I would argue w Ole Miss being the next team up. As w the LVs, OM needs to stop being underwhelming to earn trust. I do think the 6-8 order is likely a scramble btw KY, OM, and the LVs. And watch out for Auburn.

Finishing anywhere in the top 8, and possibly 9, in the SEC easily makes the NCAA tourney IMO.

Good interview by Mark Shindler. He's really young, but a really good WBB reporter. The first new team mate Georgia singles out as being surprisingly good is Teoni Key. Good for her, probably not so good for us. KY is going to be a handful. She also mentions Clara Strack as impressive.

There will be no undefeated at the end of this coming season. The talent level at the top is too close for that to happen.

Ducharme, well that is a mystery. I realize that she has dedicated her entire life to get to this point in her career, but if she isn't ready by now, she should think about hanging it up. College basketball is getting more physical, so if her condition is that delicate, well she may never be ready. Feel for her.
Yeah, I've said this over on the UConn forum, but after everything that's happened with her I wouldn't be shocked if she just never played basketball again. Head and neck injuries and re-injuries are no joke and clearly they took a significant toll on her. It's sad to see because she was doing so well on the court and I really think she could have evolved into a very good player, but even if she came back now I just don't think she'd be the same. I would absolutely love to be wrong, but reading the tea leaves, I just don't see her coming back.

Also, just found out about this news:

Hope Coach Bruno is okay. :(

🙏 prayers up!

The Gamecocks return nine of the 11 letterwinners on last year’s undefeated team and added the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation for the 2024-25 campaign. South Carolina’s 30-game regular-season schedule includes 12 games against teams ranked in the ESPN Way-Too-Early Top 25, including four against teams in the top five and four others against top-10 foes. Six of those 12 games are on the road or at neutral sites.

Prob one of the top SOS's in the nation, playing 7 of the preseason top 10 teams and playing Texas twice for a total of 8 games vs. top ten teams.

Prayers for both. Ducharme was on an upward projectory before the injuries. Hope she is doing well in school.

Ducharme has been a hot topic around here, most are incredulous that anyone would even consider letting her play again. She's the Tua of women's basketball. Retire.

So sorry to hear about Doug Bruno, one of the last of the old school coaches. Pat really liked and respected him.

No one could ever criticize Dawn's willingness to play anyone anywhere. Somewhere Pat is looking down on her kindly for that.

Auburn #25...?! I'm not convinced subbing in Talilah Scott for Scott-Grayson and Mingo-Young, and adding Gaston, really makes this a top 25 team.

Ole Miss at #24: #24 Mississippi Women's Basketball 2024-2025 Preview

Auburn anywhere near the Top 25 is laughable. Johnnie is a great coach but it’s not gonna happen there. Period.

Gaston will be totally ineffective in the SEC. Big 12 was her speed. This conference is different.

I wonder if any team has ever scheduled or faced such a gauntlet, 7 of the top ten teams and play one of those (Texas) twice For a total of 8 matchups vs top ten teams, gotta be a record imo. But I don’t know for sure. Maybe someone can show a more difficult schedule historically. I’ll hang up and listen…thx

P.S.: I will say if SC goes 5-3 or 4-4 in those contests (half are on road) it bodes well for them come tourney time. They will be battle tested to be sure, and not out of the question they might go 6-2 or better, Though I’m not wagering on that tbh. I like the hugely difficult schedule however for this team’s preparation. Does not even include the other 4 games against top 25 teams or other tough SEC games like against LV’s, nuff said, very difficult season upcoming for all. Predicting most competitive SEC race in many years, maybe ever.

@travis929 this is likely going to be the closest SEC race ever, just my opinion but I would bet on that, lot of surprises await everyone. Top 6 order is fluid. You have to tip the hat to SC and say yeah, likely favorites, but nowhere close to done deal….Texas and LSU are also front runners, but I would say 2-3 other teams may be in play also for SEC champs. Based on the SC schedule, they could win the SEC and be ranked below a Texas or LSU team who don’t play nearly as strong of a schedule (hello LSU again). Prob smart that LV team scheduled light this season in their new system. They could be highly ranked at season’s end, prob will be with their schedule and new players/coach. Tenn might crash the party, big time. Will be interesting to watch.

I'm excited to see the starters and minutes distribution for South Carolina's exhibition against Memphis this week. Who do you think the starters will be? Is this going to be a big breakout season for Feagin?
