'25 Northwestern Transfer OL Josh Thompson

It’s amazing how many on here were convinced we were gonna whip their a$$ and now all of a sudden they’re “the most talented team in the country “.
Guess Michigan and Oregon didn’t care how “talented “ they were 🤷🏻‍♂️
Cause we believed in the hype of the game and we wanted our team to win?? Did you not see how fast all their players looked both ways? Our players looked FCS slow compared to them. That’s elite level talent.

It's like they forgot what CJH had to dig us out of. We had 2 coaches that recruited as if they were at UTC, no offense to UTC, and the last coach burnt it all down on his way out. 4 years later, they crashed out when we lost to OSU. Despite their record, Michigan still won the National. Championship last year. Both of those teams have been top 5/top 10 recruiting for a while. We've been top 15 mostly.

Exactly. Moore is not a Harbuagh talent level of a coach. They were definitely gonna be down this year on wins. Just like with Nick Saban and deboer. But they still have a lot of the recruits from last year as well as the recruiting pipelines that were created a decade ago

Speaking of Harbaugh, let’s compare his first 4 years to Heupel’s. And consider the enormous difference in what each inherited.

We’re doing fine.

He also walked into a dumpster fire of a program and didn’t have all the transfer portal opportunities we have today as well as NIL recruiting. But you ain’t lying.

He had more than 57 scholarship players in his first season, though. He didn’t have an NCAA cloud hanging over him.

He was also a “splash hire” so he could parlay some of that into early recruiting success.

Like Heupel, he turned things around pretty quickly, winning 10 games year 1. But he didn’t win any championships for awhile. He sprinkled in 8 and 9 win seasons with 10 win seasons He couldn’t beat Ohio State. Critics said he was at his ceiling.

Finally, in year 7 (after a losing season during COVID), he won a Big 10 title and lost to Georgia in the CFP. Then repeated that the next year. Then he won a NC in Year 9.

He did exactly what he needed to do and hired better coaches to come onto the staff and began recruiting at an elite level. Then became a national championship winning coach. We know heupel has been doing great no one is saying he hasn’t been. Fans are realizing we need to hire better coaches to come onto the staff and recruit way better at an elite level not top 10 or 11 to win the a conference championship and a natty. Will he follow in Harbaugh’s steps? Or just become complacent with his best friends that can’t develop or recruit.

Agree on the coaching hire part. Michigan never recruited at a top 5 level under Harbaugh. Their classes were ranked in the 8-15 range.

Michigan class recruiting rank 5 years pre-title. Starting with most recent:

17
9
13
10
8

Y’all know google is free, right? No need to make things up.

Are we not gonna act like he hasn’t been putting tons of studs into the NFL with 1st round picks? He also had a top 5 class in 2017. Go look at the top end of the recruits consensus #1 player in the nation one class. Then had multiple 4 stars that actually turned out to be great/star players. He also Recruited very well in the trenches. Something we are not doing as good as they did. Finally got David Sanders Jr. he also consistently got players to never transfer and stay all the way through as seniors. While also developing the players and their talents. I hate Michigan/Harbaugh not as much as Ohio State but I still respect what he did with his Alma mater.

Absolutely respect what he did. Weird dude that is an awesome football coach.

But he never hired coaches that resulted in them recruiting at an elite level. Which is what my post was responding to.

Their db coach definitely recruited and developed better than what Tennessee has had in the last decade. As well as tight ends, o lineman, d lineman. Ranking numbers don’t mean everything with what recruiting elite means. Having eye for talent and what you can do with your scheme goes into that as well.remember butch jones classes top recruit Khalil McKenzie was a huge bust. But yes I understand your point we’re both not wrong.

You said “began recruiting at an elite level.”

His class rankings are no different than what Heupel is doing. If you’re saying he took those classes and developed them into NFL picks, then yes. He developed them. But he wasn’t really recruiting at a higher level.

Aidan Hutchinson Rasean Gary Jabrill Peppers JJ McCarthy Blake McCorum and many more others are elite recruits. We haven’t had any players play to their ability like those in the their respective positions except hendon hooker who was a transfer. Dylan Sampson and Jalin Hyatt(Jeremy Pruitt was head coach when he got recruited). Each played amazing for one season for us.

Those were elite recruits who developed into elite players.

We have to develop elite recruits into elite players. Sanders, Nico, Matthews, Hobbs, Dye, Jordan Ross, and Peyton Lewis (among others) were elite recruits, rated just as highly as the Michigan guys you mentioned. Will they develop into to elite players? We shall see. That’s where the development part comes in.

Time will tell…
