Not espn's fault that manning lost the heisman?

Champ Bailey had better stats at Georgia his last season than Woodson did and didn't even get mentioned in the Heisman Race. Why was that? Manning was significantly more influential for his team in 97 than Woodson ever was. You put Woodson on the 97 Tennessee team and no way they beat Auburn in that SEC championship game.

The trailer park comment was over the line. I actually thought the pig in the elevator commercial was funny though.

And that's why people hate the prick. The article got almost nothing right. Even the silliness about the fans' grudge against Woodson is garbage.

In 1997, after Michigan's Charles Woodson won the Heisman Trophy, Tennessee fans, who believed the GameDay crew had stumped against the Vols' Peyton Manning, bombarded ESPN with hate mail. On a national radio show Fowler referred to the harangues as a "trailer-park frenzy",

And the frenzy continues.

auburn wasn't exactly a juggernaut that year.

Tim Couch. Where is your argument for his Heisman?

Yeah, I meant up to that point. Leinart probably now owns that title.

I would have been fine with Couch winning Heisman, though I think Bailey was the most outstanding in 1999.

Back in the day when Carl Pickens played both ways his stats were WAY better than Woodson's.

Not world beaters, but #11.

If it's based on how well you contributed to your team's success when you consider the schedules, it's hard to discount Manning for losing one game when his schedule was packed!

Peyton's Vols beat:

#5 UCLA
#10 UGA
#11 Auburn
#19 Southern Miss
#22 Ole Miss

Woodson's Wolverines beat:
#12 Ohio St
#16 Penn St

do you forget you won the NC without manning the next season?

Defense changed - a lot.

The team was a year older and better. As I recall the main cogs they lost were Manning, Nash, Little, and Fair. Nash was awesome, but Price and Wilson were pretty damn good so they didn't miss him much. Johnson and Goodrich* were the 2 corners and we didn't miss Fair all that much either.

*combined to hold Warrick to 9 yards in national title game.

I just hate that whole Michigan team. They had no business winning the AP. Nebraska had 1 close game they were lucky to win and then blew EVERYONE else out of the water while playing a tough schedule. Michigan's average margin of victory was weak and so was their schedule.

Was retarded that the UM team was handed a title for that garbage season, topped with a win over a very weak Wazzu team.

New adds were on the dline and improved LB situation. Defense was fast and could stop the run.

unquestionably one of the worst eras in pac-10 history. the stanford rose bowl team of that era was the worst rose bowl team of my lifetime (even worse than illinois).

Droski, I was wondering, after all this time on our message board do you cheer a little for the Vols or are we so obnoxious that it made you hate them?

ha ha. i always root for you guys. i've come to appreciate the passion of the fanbase and i don't have any particular affinity for anyone you play against.

1100 rushing and 1500 passing with 25 total tds. Those were good numbers for the time. Even if Florida had beaten UT I wouldn't have had a problem with him beating out Rex.
2600 total yards and 25 total td's as a quarterback isn't really special at all.

The fact that he had 1100 and 18 tds on the ground though is. He was the best individual player throughout the season and nobody really stepped up and took it from him. Also I would go with Carson Palmer as the most undeserving winner the last 10 or so years imo.

They didn't miss Jonothan Brown either.

His stats may have been marginally better than those of Tee Martin from 1998.

In 2001, Grossman threw for almost 4000 yards (not including the bowl game) and 34 touchdowns. He may have benefited from Florida's system, and he may not have deserved it, but he certainly deserved it over Crouch.
