Not sold on Butch nor Dobbs

My opinion probably doesn't matter to anyone on this board, but I'm under 100 posts on this board so I'm gonna make a long post because I can't make a thread yet. So it'll be long and probably no one will read it. I just want to vent a little after a hard loss, ya know?

Butch Jones. I like the guy. I think he was a pretty good hire for Tennessee, though like most people I talked to, I was definitely disappointed and said "Wait... Butch who!?". Now I've come to the understanding that he definitely knows what it takes to win, both on and off the field, at the college level. Does that mean that he will be successful? Maybe, well see. Personally I would love to see him become UTs most beloved coach.

All of that being said, I haven't completely bought in to Butch. In fact, I'm highly critical of his coaching decisions on the field, but that's just me being an armchair coach that wouldn't last 2 seconds as a football coach for UT or even head of a lower divisional school. I'd have my hands full with Pop Warner. Always easier from the couch, eh?

However, I HAVE bought in to the players buying in. I know that doesn't sound like it makes much sense but what I mean is that I love how the guys on this team are believing in Butch, his system, and his assistants. I think it speaks heaps and bounds about his integrity as a football coach and a mentor. The guys know he's a guy that is worth following.

Not that my opinion matters to much of anyone, I just feel like Butch has more to prove before I crown him a coach worthy of the holy grail that is this UT football program. (Perhaps its lost its shine in the last decade ;)! )

But on to the atrocious loss tonight. I honestly feel that Butch played this game extremely passive, and that's not going to cut it on the road at a Top 10 football team. It's gambling, but I would have gave the offense a nod on many of those 4th downs around the 50 yard line. When were trailing by a possible (yet very difficult for sure) 21 points in the start of the second half, I say we take those shots. It got out of hand regardless. Then again, hindsight.

Another thing that disappointed me tonight is that he gave up on that last drive. In my opinion, you use those 2 timeouts and 2 minutes to give your freshman quarterback a very real idea of what it takes to take your football team down the field against a quality opponent on the road. There honestly can't be a better way to prepare a young quarterback for that situation. He preached they would play for 60 minutes.. At tops they have effort for 58 minutes. So that was disappointing to see, but like the level headed fans on this board, it's way to early to call for his head.

On to Dobbs. True Freshman, on the road, top 10 opponent, night game, coming off a terrible loss... Tough plate for the ole Dobster tonight. He played, in my opinion, relatively decent given the circumstances. Did he score some points? Nope. Did he have much help? At least not from Josh Smith, that's for certain. No running game to help make the dbacks bite on the run, very questionable offensive line play, and certainly didn't get much help from the defense tonight. Also, if I see Downs miss another block assignment that causes a huge sack/TFL, I'm going to question the coaches for even putting a tight end without the blocking skills necessary to make that block in that situation.

Dobbs had his first start, didn't get much help, broke some records, made some runs, and definitely had his fair share of mistakes. (3 TOs). Overall, I'm gonna go with the future looking pretty bright for this young man. At the very least, I feel that his ceiling is higher than Justin Worley. Definitely think he's our best option, if we don't get Riley a nod and burn his redshirt (I mention this because I don't have a clue which one of these are better), and he's our guy going forward. At least until the spring.

I guess well see more of what our young QB is made of against a very formidable Auburn team in the greatest stadium in the nation next week. Don't let this loss keep you guys from attending! It wouldn't stop me if I had any money or no exams the following week! Hope there's a great turnout and that place is rocking! There's always hope! Go Vols!

Dobbs has some talent, but no touch on his deep throws and an inabillity to get it into the endzone.....I am just not seeing the it factor that people have talked about...Bray looked better against SC as a true freshman and you could immediately see his supreme talent and it factor....I'm just not seeing it with Dobbs. 3 points even as a true freshman and with wr drops ain't looking too promising...he resembles worely as a true freshman agsint SC...more so than a future stud....I am eager to see if Riley is any better...

As for Butch....the team has quit on him...oline has regressed ....defense is still awful...is.it really surprising considering what janckeck did at uga? That might as well been a Dooley team out there tonight...

That's your opinion,but I totally disagree with it. This is a team/program on the incline not decline. I think Coach gets it and he will turn this thing around.

Why are you a fan? Dobbs didn't do to bad for his first start. CBJ is the answer but he is not going to get it done his first year and yes this is a drooley team. When CBJ gets the players he wants, they win be good. If you don't have faith in the team, go jump on another team band wagon.

I'm not sold OP isn't a troll. At best OP is a poster with average talent lacking the IT factor.

Missouri 3rd string RS freshman sure looked good in his 2nd start

Big difference between a redshirt freshman and a true freshman. Even Peyton was limited when he played as a true freshman. The difference was that we were physically better than most teams we played back then and could rely on running and defense. We don't have that now.

Yeah I was surprised that Dobbs wasn't airing it out like Manning after just ONE week of snaps with the first team.. I mean..who would have thought otherwise...........

I think Coach Jones is the man for the job. The only problem I have with him is the fact he preaches to play for 60 minutes, yet he doesn't use his time outs and calls three straight running plays at the end. Let Dobbs keep firing and build some confidence and gain experience. Fight for 60 minutes.
This. He gave up in the third. I have heard he didn't say a thing about the Bama loss. They just move on to film of next opponent. Dont you show your players what they did wrong.

My goodness,
Playing #9 ranked team in nation. What I saw was a QB that had some velocity on the ball. Nothing beats experience. He will get better. As far as areas of concern------

Lack of speed is glaring on defense.

I opened this thread and realized why the author of the OP is on my ignore list.

Same crap, different game. Butch is not the guy...yada,yada,yada...

Dobbs threw for 240 yards last night against a very good defense...on the road...in his first career start...that's more yards than worley has thrown for in any game this season. including austin peay, western ky, and so. alabama...he can't help the two potential td's (or at least 30 yard passes) dropped by north and smith.

let's see how he does in the next two games which are at home...where we've been playing pretty awesome this season...

Well for those who are not sold on Butch and Dobbs, I have a simple solution for you: stop cheering for Tennessee and bandwagon another team. Its pretty simple. If you're going to berate a first year HC with a true freshman QB then we don't need you as fans anyway.
Yeah, and you also think Obama is doing a great job, right?

Against Bama? Getting off the plane.

Seriously though, I see both sides of not showing Bama film.

Its crazy sometimes to come on here after a woodshed- whoopin like last night and see how people are either one extreme or the other. (I have been that way of course before) Now that the dust has settled, I think we have seen that while Butch is probably long-term the answer for us, his supporting staff is average at best. I know you can factor in the new QB, the dropped passes, and several things that went their way(ref single handily blocking two of our LBs to get DGB into the endzone in the first half), but here are some things that can't be overlooked or excepted at this point in the season with the talent we have:

Talent and what we have done with it-- at this point the staff should have a good idea of who can do what and they should have a game plan and schemes set up to maximize our talent level. I know that Mizz was not playing quite as many young players as we were, but for you star-gazers out there, their two and three stars were whipping our 3 and four stars all over the field to the point where it got embarrassing (that is flat coaching). Our Offense and Defensive lines got taken to school last night and were man-handled. Our O line got more false start penalties in the game than penalties we got as a team in 4-5 games! We were constantly out of position/blown coverages and were running not bad, but horrible angles all night on D. At this point in the season the staff should recognize what our DB situation is and minimize the damage and coach that during the week. I hate picking on one individual, but Coleman killed us last night from blown coverages to giving a WR needing 5yds for a first down 10yds of cushion.(COACHING)
Dobbs played a descent game for the hand he was dealt, he made plenty of mistakes and I think could have done a few things better, but his team certainly didn't do him any favors.
Am I the only one that can clearly see that when Lane comes in, the kid is a patient, hard hole hitting machine that runs down hill and drags defenders!? Just because you are a senior doesn't mean you automatically get to start. I know Lane has battled some injuries so in fairness I am not sure of his full health situation, but when he was in last night, he didn't hesitate and dance like someone else and ran straight North/South. (Coaching again, not putting the best runner out there, even seeing it at half and not making the adjustments)
We have a lot of young guys with a new staff and new game plan/schemes, but we played and they were coached like it was the Austin Peay game and we were trying to get used to schemes, timing, and each other.
Before I get blasted for the typical, "then you coach" or "they are #9 in the country" junk, a still legitimate argument is that we flat "played and competed" with USCe and GA(their O lines and D lines were not hurt) yet this week we looked like this was the first game of the season and we learned and took nothing away from playing on the road last week.
Coaching Grade-- D-
Hopefully the kids bounce back and don't give up after we lose at home to AU and still have enough pride and juice left in the tank to pull out wins to Vandy and KY so we can go bowling.

He also threw two gimme interceptions that were dropped, a lost fumble and was wildly inaccurate all game long, even when he had time in the pocket. 240 yards after 42 passes kinda negates 240 yards. He looked good on short routes, but had little touch other than that. There's a lot wrong with this team, but Dobbs looked far from good last night

Coach Jones and his staff need a minimum of 5 years to get this thing turned around. If in five years we aren't competing for the SEC title, give him 6. What this program needs more than anything is consistency in staff and consistency in recruiting. Butch Jones has proven he can win. What Tennessee does not need is more turnover and inconsistency.

What are you looking for to show you it's a well coached team? (Are you talking about play calling or player development, or player performance or what?)

Where to start???

1. Defense backs and linebackers routinely out of position in pass coverage;

2. Defense taking bad angles on attempting to tackle RB's and wideouts;

3. Numerous procedure penalties;

4. Defense - Very rarely has a spy on oppopsing qb who is a known running qb;

5. Continuing to run zone read when counter trap plays have proven to be more successful run plays.

6. Ran too few screens and qb draws last night to slow pass rush;

7. O Coord did not have a game plan to protect the true freshman qb (ie. keep a back in the back field to help with pass rush);

8. O Coord continuing to give Neal more carries than Lane who clearly hits the whole faster - run game is noticeably better with quick hitting run plays bs inside zone read;

9. Zone blocking - no fan - takes away from natural aggression for smash mouth run blocking;

10. Defense Coord did not have answer to stop Mauch - a spy should have been used - see #4 above.

I agree that Tennessee is talent deficient however I do not believe that the coaching staff has been stellar (or even good) as a whole this year with the exception of in recruiting.

Why in the world should it take five years? That's eternity in college football

Agree, but I think in year 3 we will see significant improvement. It's hard for any coach to get 5 years these days, if he gets a 7 win season in or by year 3 then I think it will help buy him 5. I think next year could be better, though I am in the minority. One thing to remember is that while Butch is turning it around, there could be turnover at UGA, Florida, USC, or maybe even Bama during that time. That could help as well.

Because Tennessee just so happens to be the worst team in the SEC, when other SEC teams are at their pinnacle. Keep in mind, the majority of the "help" we are supposedly getting in the '14 class are coming in as HS seniors. It takes time to get even talented HS players SEC gauntlet experience.
