Because Tennessee just so happens to be the worst team in the SEC, when other SEC teams are at their pinnacle. Keep in mind, the majority of the "help" we are supposedly getting in the '14 class are coming in as HS seniors. It takes time to get even talented HS players SEC gauntlet experience.
Look how quickly other good coaches were able to come in and turn around fledgling programs. I agree with you on consistency, but if Butch doesn't have us at least flirting with ten wins again by year 3, something's wrong. Really wrong. Giving him five years is just making the brand more stale and driving away more fans. Last night Butch had no control over the players. Everyone quit and it was obvious. The "best staff in the country" still has glaring problems that are coachable:
1. Defense runs bad angles for tackles.
2. Defense does horrible job wrapping up for tackles.
3. Secondary constantly out of position. It's one thing to just get beat by better players, but the secondary is constantly in the wrong place
4. O-Line still can't run block and they've regressed on pass blocking. Last night we weren't just losing a 4 on 4 battle, we were getting demolished.
5. I know the WRs are young, but this far into the season, they should be better at running routes.
6. Consistently losing the pass rush, yet our TEs and RBs are consistently running pass routes instead of staying to help block.
Things aren't that rosy with Butch and Co. Dooley looked really good for eight months too, then the wheels fell off. Time for Butch to show what he's made of.
