Nothing Against Coach Martin...

This hire was going to be a safe hire with a coach the opposite of Pearl. Just like the Dooley hire for football. If Martin had not been hired by us he would have been a serious candidate at Missouri or Purdue if Painter left.

Kruger, Grant, or Turgeon, if we were willing to pay, would have been safe hires. A three year mid-major coach is a risky hire by definition. Youmight find a Pearl, or you might get Buzz-ed.

Even though we ALL wanted it to happen, our situation with the 'AA wouldn't allow it. Still though, there were plenty of more qualified candidates out there, who were still playing.

Stevens and Marshall would have been better. No other mid-major coaches.

I would have made Brad Stevens have a presser and explain how much he loved Butler and turned down 3 million a year to stay put..

I agree that the hire was rushed and I fear we are taking a step backwards when IMO we had a real opportunity to make a statement with a big name hire. The only thing to do now is get behind the team and hope for the best.

Yep. And the contract would have million dollar bonuses for Final 4's and National Championships.

I agree with this. I wanted us to make Grant, Frank, and Stevens --2-4 million dollars-- turn down the big bucks. But the administration identified Martin as their guy, apparently, and were afraid of losing him to one of their coaching search competitors.
Why in the world would you offer Anthony Grant that kind of money?

Kruger makes CCM look like chopped liver.

Of the hires so far at BCS schools, ours only beats GT. Providence, Arkansas and potentially Missou, Oklahoma, and NC State will all beat us out.

Our program cannot be worse than all those schools, even with potential sanctions.

Turned down an academic scholarship from Harvard IN ORDER to play
b-ball.

Hmm...I don't think that Harvard gives merit-based scholarships either....

But, he did turn down Harvard and Yale to play basketball at Kenyon. Was he offered to play basketball at those schools, or just offered admission? That part was unclear to me....

Lon Krugers record....

21 years coaching college basketball
13 NCAA appearances including 9 in his last 17 years
3 times past the second round (one 22 years ago)
3 of his 4 coaching stops at schools with a FAR better basketball history then UT.

So we missed out on???

I may have been misinformed --Mike and Mike in the Morning. They said he didn't take the "scholarship" because he wanted to play basketball. Maybe they offer more "financial aid" to minorities and that is what they were referring to.

Given the choice of working hard to make a home-run hire or hardly working to bring in a mid-major with potential, this AD will choose the path of least resistance every time.
