I feel like Hatvol needs to put the obligatory "NO HOMO" after any further posts about Lon Kruger as much as he talks about him on here.

I must have missed something. Is Kruger supposed to be a great coach?

I'd rather take a chance on an up and comer than a journeyman coach. Kruger isn't anything special. Martin may not be, but at least he's got a shot to be exceptional. Kruger is the very definition of average.

I may have been misinformed --Mike and Mike in the Morning. They said he didn't take the "scholarship" because he wanted to play basketball. Maybe they offer more "financial aid" to minorities and that is what they were referring to.

They definitely offer need-based assistance. In fact, with their current levels of support, your family can make a reasonable amount (~60,000) and you can still qualify for a full ride. Tuition is phased in after that up to a full-payment level after a point around 150,000 or 200,000 dollars of family income.

I'm not sure about Yale, but I know that Harvard doesn't offer merit-based scholarships now, and I don't think they did then.

Lon Krugers record....

21 years coaching college basketball
13 NCAA appearances including 9 in his last 17 years
3 times past the second round (one 22 years ago)
3 of his 4 coaching stops at schools with a FAR better basketball history then UT.

So we missed out on???
Remind me of all the great accomplishments Florida basketball had run up at the time Lon Kruger arrived in Gainesville. While you're at it, check out their all time record against Tennessee at that point.

Well I hope Painter leaves and Purdue calls and offers 2-2.3 million to Coach ZO. Hope he packs up and goes to his dream job. Then we can get turned down even more and end up with Cerritos College's Mens Basketball Head Coach Russ May. I am sure this guy would love to come coach here....probably do it for $36,000 a year and a 3 bedroom 2 bath 1600 sq. ft. home in Halls and a 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager in honor of our last football championship.

Russ May is a cheap move up and comer....

Good Lord.
Some of you need to chill out.
Coach Martin may turn out to be the best basketball coach in Tennessee history.
Paying someone with a big name 3 million a year does NOT mean that coach would be a winner at Tennessee. It doesn't mean the 3 million a year coach is any better or as good a coach as Coach Martin.
True VOL fans are going to support Coach Martin 100%. If he doesn't produce championship caliber teams in a couple of
years, that is the time to bash the man.
He is our coach, everything I have read and heard reported about him has been very impressive. Give him a chance to do his job.
All this bashing before the man and his family Has a chance to unpack. I hope he or his wife is not reading volnation. I'm sure some of the post on here will really make them feel welcome to Knoxville..Some of the things said on here about Coach Martin and Coach Dooley are pathetic.

So Floridas RECENT history is far better then UTs but at least they've won something EVER. UNLV and Illinois were good basketball programs prior to his arrival and hes accomplished what? I just cant imagine how many programs better then UTs have needed coaches in the past 10 years and all have passed on the amazing Lon Kruger. You apparently have your reasons for believing in his greatness, I dont see it to the point of OMG we missed a once in a lifetime chance here. Were there more proven coaches out there then Martin? yes but there were and are better coaches out there then Kruger. I with some others on here stated during the CBP firing process that many people are fooling themselves about the level of UTs basketball program. It was NEVER consistently a top 25 program prior to CBP and probably wont be for years to come. When it comes to basketball most top coaches will pass on UT so you take a chance on someone unproven or go with someone whos proven in 21 years he'll get you 2 3 sweet sixteens but I guess that'd be great for UT.

And with that statement you have proven your knowledge of college basketball to be inadequate.

You're right. I don't understand the game of basketball. I thought that a coach that goes to the tourney one out of 2 years is average. I don't understand the game of basketball because I thought as a coach stays in one place, his teams generally improve.

I'm sure you'll point out Kruger's Final Four at Fla. That's fantastic. But why did his team go .500 the next 2 years?

In his 13 appearances in the NCAA tourney, he made it to the 2nd weekend three times. In 21 years as a HC (not counting Pan American), he's finished in the top 2 of his league 5 times. He's won his league twice (both times tied for 1st).

If that isn't the very definition of average, I don't know what is. But again, my knowledge of college ball is apparently inadequate.

Why would he come here after turning down Arizona? Was it the state of their program at the time or something?
Arizona was a much bigger mess two years ago than Tennessee is right now. Like I said, I'm not sure Kruger will leave for Oklahoma. If he does, Tennessee missed a huge opportunity.

Just my 2 cents and I like the hire too but its funny our AD talks about competing for titles but we alwayls go cheap and were not even going to start with the baseball coach and how that looks like its going to turn out

Bashing the hire is not bashing the coach. thus far in his coaching career, Martin has done all anyone could expect. I hope he continues to. But the idea that we cannot criticize a hire without losing our status as "true fans" is too simple for words.

This doesn't surprise me. I think that Martin has great upside, but of course UT went the cheaper route rather than pony up the money to get a bigger name..

At UT, we pony up the big bucks to fire coaches, not hire them.
