easy to give away other peoples money isn't it.

i wouldn't know. Do you have experience?

I would imagine in your profession, you have experience in losing others money.

Is it easier to lose other peoples money than lose your own?

Maybe, maybe not. But how is the principle one bit different?

If he did his job and was entitled to it, why should he not take it?

Have you ever thought that in a company of 115,500 people (per their report) that there may have been some fat that could have been cut in the employee dept?

I am not saying that fat didn't need to be cut, just saying that particular year I would have taken my normal bonus.

Not a raise.

So essentially you are saying you can't give me one reason he shouldn't have taken it other than it's a lot of money?

Thus you agree that one can make too much money?

The same people who complain about morals and ethics are the same people who are the first to say "Well it doesn't affect me"

Do you actually read my posts? I am not saying there weren't good reaons to probably take it, I don't sit on the board and am not privy to company information-I have no idea what the companies balance sheet looks like.

Just in a year with mass layoffs personally wouldn't have taken a raise as a CEO.

I do think that a certain amount of money is enough. DIfferent for each person, and it should be up to the individual to decide if they are lucky enough to be in that situation.

So ethically nothing wrong obviously with what he did, but I don't necesarilly agree w it.

Doesn't affect me meaning I am not losing sleep at night, but I feel sorry for anybody who lost a job last year.

Tough time to find a job.

Me too. Pretty soon the 'poor' will be complaining about not having 50 inch HDTV's.

Look, if I don't have a 50-inch TV my 6-year-old will never stay entertained. And if he doesn't stay entertained, I'll never be able to keep up with my Farmville critters. And if I don't keep up with my Farmville critters, then everything I've worked for this far in my life will mean nothing. NOTHING!!!!!

Vols520, I see where you’re coming from on this. You’re just saying that if you were in his position you would have opted out of the raise. I understand your point, even if I wouldn’t have done the same thing. But to each his own.

Now let’s shuffle the circumstances around a little. Let’s say that instead of laying off 8000 workers the company actually hired a few thousand new employees and met their sales goal. But due to other circumstances the stock dipped dramatically. Would you have taken the raise?

What I’m asking here is what do you see as the CEO’s largest responsibility, or what justifies a raise in your eyes.

Well obviously he or she has many roles- Keeping profits up, keeping customers and shareholders happy, setting the company directive/agenda and fostering a positive company culture.

I think it's a case by case decision if a raise is warranted. He probably did some great things last year. Just tough to take a raise in such a down year, especially when your company laid off a lot of people.

I didnt' say he shouldn't have been able to take a raise, I said I wouldn't have done it. It's a personal opinion and nothing more.

Once again, it's reading comprehension. Stop being so right vs. left.

He can't. It is the manner in which he operates. It's easier for guys like him if everything is divisive

Agreed and understood. I guess when you boil it down; my question is to whom do you believe a CEO owes his/her fiduciary duty, the employees or the stockholders?

I personally believe his/her greatest responsibility is increasing stockholder wealth. Granted, that is a more general and simplistic viewpoint and many of the things you mentioned contribute to this. But if the stock value is rising, especially above projections, I believe he should be rewarded.

That last question does beg the question as to how the stock is performing vs. projections…
