Maybe, maybe not. But how is the principle one bit different?
If he did his job and was entitled to it, why should he not take it?
Have you ever thought that in a company of 115,500 people (per their report) that there may have been some fat that could have been cut in the employee dept?
So essentially you are saying you can't give me one reason he shouldn't have taken it other than it's a lot of money?
Thus you agree that one can make too much money?
Me too. Pretty soon the 'poor' will be complaining about not having 50 inch HDTV's.
Look, if I don't have a 50-inch TV my 6-year-old will never stay entertained. And if he doesn't stay entertained, I'll never be able to keep up with my Farmville critters. And if I don't keep up with my Farmville critters, then everything I've worked for this far in my life will mean nothing. NOTHING!!!!!

Vols520, I see where youre coming from on this. Youre just saying that if you were in his position you would have opted out of the raise. I understand your point, even if I wouldnt have done the same thing. But to each his own.
Now lets shuffle the circumstances around a little. Lets say that instead of laying off 8000 workers the company actually hired a few thousand new employees and met their sales goal. But due to other circumstances the stock dipped dramatically. Would you have taken the raise?
What Im asking here is what do you see as the CEOs largest responsibility, or what justifies a raise in your eyes.
I didnt' say he shouldn't have been able to take a raise, I said I wouldn't have done it. It's a personal opinion and nothing more.
Once again, it's reading comprehension. Stop being so right vs. left.
Well obviously he or she has many roles- Keeping profits up, keeping customers and shareholders happy, setting the company directive/agenda and fostering a positive company culture.
I think it's a case by case decision if a raise is warranted. He probably did some great things last year. Just tough to take a raise in such a down year, especially when your company laid off a lot of people.
