Official Dave Hart is Officially Woefully Inept Thread

How is Hart supposed to manage your expectations when your brain is clogged with your own Gruden illusions? You made the personal choice to believe the fairy tales.

Pretty simple.

Day one of coaching search - reach out to Jon Gruden with a serious offer in hand.

Day two - Get response from Jon Gruden.

Later in Day Two - (assuming response from Jon Gruden was a thanks but no thanks), either ask Gruden's people to politely decline (JUST LIKE THEY DID WHEN ARKANSAS OFFERED HIM) or simply make a release yourself saying "we reached out to Coach Gruden to gauge his interest in the position, but he informed us that he would not be interested in being the next coach at the University of Tennessee"

Day 3 - We are now going to wait until the college football regular season ends before interviewing other candidates.

Boom. Done. PR nightmare avoided. Fan base happy, informed, and supportive of their AD.

Without the full story, which we will never get, I'm not going to say Hart is inept. However after the 2014 season if we are no better than 7-5 it will be time to get the pitch forks out!

I highly doubt you would be supportive of anything less than a Gruden hire.

Dave Hart's job is:

Evaluate, contact and acquire the best possible coach for the unique position that UT sits in in the college football arena.

He doesn't owe any damned up-to-the-minute Press Conferences to the fans. His job is Athletic Director. Not Public Relations. The fruit of his labor will be yielded 2-3 years after the hiring.

I have full faith that (if they did it with not only Kiffin but Dooley) that the UT fanbase isn't fairly represented by some of the less favorable people on this forum/board/thread. I'll support whoever Hart hires until it is clear the coach is not capable of holding this position.

Then we'll be like Notre Dame/Alabama and we'll ignore the constant whining and excuse-mongering until we find a guy that can do the job. That's just the way it is.

Overreaction?

I think not.

If what LaMonte says is true and Dave Hart only reached out to him for the first time this morning as a courtesy.... His ass should be on the next bus back to Tuscaloosa.

What a clown.

The fact that he couldn't get Gruden is one thing. The fan base can get over that.

But letting this volcano erupt for the last two weeks while he apparently sat on his thumb in his office doing nothing?!?!

This is the most botched coaching search one could ever imagine...... And apparently its not even close to being over.

Put me in the group that thinks we might as well search for a new AD as well.

/rant

seriously, read the OP

This isn't a "damnit we couldn't get Gruden thread"

This is a "damnit, Hart has botched this entire coaching search because of his PR failures thread"

He's got his hands full managing the enormous egos and multi-million/year contracts the people that matter in this (i.e. the coach) without needing to concern himself with making the minority of UT fans happy by effectively ruining the negotiation phase by showing his hand to the world.

Because of the PR botching of this search, Hart will lose the press conference and the spring and summer will be filled with more negativity surrounding the program. Then we play an incredibly hard schedule in the fall with a team that will be learning a new system and rebuilding.

You all should be prepared for an era of very negative feelings the next 12 months, at least.

You can't see the forest for the trees.

Public relations is HUGE part of his job, because the entire athletic department budget is predicated on season ticket sales and putting butts in seats.

Well I officially believe Hart coming here was to exact revenge for what Fulmer did to Bama. His actions, or lack of, pretty much says his intention is to go out and get another Mike Hammy level hire to make sure that the ship that was UT football stays sunk and has little to no chance of returning to its once proud glory.

This is so stupid I don't even know where to start. Hart may or may not be incompetent, but he didn't get to where he is (as athletic director of a major university) via some super-secret, conspiratorial scheme to destroy Tennessee athletics from the inside.

I bleed orange. At the end of the search, if Hart gets us another Dooley, then fine, call him out on his incompetence. Call for his firing, I don't care. But for anyone to suggest that he's intentionally hiring a loser to "exact revenge" for some (ultimately petty) reason makes you come across as a mouthbreathing retard.

The problem is that a bunch of people on a message board got caught up in what other people on a message board said - and then took it as gospel.

Dave Hart has not been sitting on his hands this whole time. There is no logical or rational option for the contrary. If you truly, truly believe that, you are living in the fantasy world Bob Lamonte spoke of.

GBOV you are right on.....it's not the fact that we didn't get Gruden....it's the fact that Hart has let this get drug out and we look like we had all our eggs in one basket....and being the AD of a Public University he does owe us some kind of info on the search or at least come out and deny the statement from Gruden's agent that TODAY was the first time he has heard from Hart....bc with our donations, ticket purchases, merchandise purchases etc, we help pay for his salary....

Skeeter has given the impression that Hart has been in his office since Dooley was fired.

at least you get it. Most of the people posting in this thread just think this is a bash the AD because we didn't get the pipe dream hire thread.

And anybody with half a brain knows that you're 100% correct. The reaction to all of this is embarrassing.

Link?

What's embarrassing is how pathetic we'll look if we end up with Jimbo Fisher, Al Golden, Charlie Strong or Larry Fedora. Especially if we have 3 more seasons of 7 losses.

Living in big 10 country, I can tell you that everyone I know still laughs about Lane Kiffin, told me he was a tool the first time he opened his mouth and they all believe Tennessee has become irrelevant. Heck, go read Vandymania or Hogville and even they think our team has become a joke. That's coming from fanbases that don't even have an SEC championship under their belt.

If you think the reaction from our fanbase about Hart is embarrassing, you should step outside of Tennessee and see what fans say about our team. For the most part, they don't acknowledge Tennessee football and when they do, it's pure mockery. Don't let being in the SEC fool you, they just view the top few teams as dominant and everyone else as bottom feeders. The fact that Vandy has made it to consecutive bowls and we've finished below .500 that past three seasons has given credence to that belief.

I'm glad you're really confident in the coaching search but calling our fans embarrassing for being wary just adds fuel to this dysfunctional situation. This football program has become a laughing stock around the country. My good friend who doesn't even follow the SEC closely other than the top teams, just texted me the other day laughing that he read an article about our athletic department having a 4 million dollar deficit. That is how people view Tennessee football at moment, a punchline.

Not sure why you're essentially calling people stupid if they don't believe Hart did everything he could to get Gruden. Could just as easily say it's stupid to believe he did because unless you're Hart or Gruden, you're just assuming. To each their own but if we don't end up with Gruden, the only thing I find embarrassing is myself for having spent so much time in the Gruden thread and believing it's a done deal, an MOU was signed etc. It was the exact same stuff being saie by Arkansas fans since April. As far as I know, we all got trolled and none of the stuff said was true at all. It's obvious at least one fanbase was lied to and if one was lied to, common sense would tell you both were lied to seeing as it was the exact same info.

To each their own but I guess I'm just a halfwit because I'm in the camp that will be pissed off with Hart if we end with Jimbo Fisher, Al Golden, Charlie Strong or Larry Fedora. Quite frankly, I think Bob Stoops wouldn't be that great of a hire either. Despite playing in the Big 12 and bordering Texas, he's lost at least 2 games in 12 of 14 seasons. His resume is no better than Fulmer's or a number of other coaches that have been in the SEC the past 10 or 20 years. And doing it in the SEC is obviously harder, especially if you're comparing Tennessee's pipeline to Oklahoma's.

I really can't help but be down given the names that have been floated around. If the lists that have been mentioned are true, people have a right to be upset. Should just let the academics keep that 18 million because another Dooley-esque hire like Golden or Strong will be the same as flushing it down the toilet.

Skeeter has given the impression that Hart has been in his office since Dooley was fired.

And if anyone believed that they're stupid. The university administration isn't going to let him just hang out in his office and do nothing right now. If he was it'd be justifiable cause for firing without severance.

Just because Hart isn't holding our (the fans) hands this whole time doesn't mean he's doing nothing. Honestly, as much as I'd like to be privy to every detail about the hire, it's probably better for everyone involved that it's somewhat "dark."

The fire and over reaction has been on message boards - period! Posters on these boards have built, fueled and fanned this fire. Everyone has a source, a friend, a relative or boss who supposedly knows something. This information is listed under a "Rumor" thread. That is all that this has been from the beginning. How are you going to blame Hart? What is true and what is just hear say? Will we ever know?

I WASN'T TALKING ABOUT YOU!

:hi:

Got it. I sometimes think the world revolves around me. :)

On skeeter: he predicted Lamar Dawson to UT. He also has admittedly put out fake info to catch people. He's pretty dang good I think, but nobody on any site is 100% accurate.
