And it's not over my friend.. Not by a longshot IMO.

I don't believe so either. Every bad thing people have had to say about Butch has been shoved back in their face. I guess the negative things to say just never runs out.

We already almost have more elite players committed than we actually signed last year. We have 3 widely known elite guys ready and recruiting for us in march..

I'd say there's all kinds of things to be anxious for and excited about on the Hill.

Having been a former HS QB...I never once went into a practice or a game and asked the Coach "Do you think we have a chance"? My mindset as with every player, on every team, at every level is...We will destroy our opponent today" For some reason you don't seem to get that basic principle for winning.

Enthusiasm from a bunch of random guys posting on a message board in the middle of the night in March = a recipe for winning on the football field by college kids in the fall. Got it.

Was Dools ever ranked 6th in the nation at anything? I know he was 107th in Defense last year. Good grief what a retarded MH exclamation mark on how not to be an AD.

In recent years, how many times have we bad top flight legacies in our backyard? Common. Acting like this isn't an odd but blessed occurance is naive.

Hunter and Roger to close out a top ten class. Sound familiar?

You guys have lost all since of perspective.

We have a coach now that has proven that he can win at different levels. Thats someting Dooley and that douche Kiffin didnt have on their resume. We just got a verbal from the #1 recruit in the state along with a couple other highly ranked recruits. People are excited, if you cant understand why then its you that has lost perspective.

I understand not getting overly excited in fear of being disappointed, but it should be obvious that we have something very special going in right now.. It's a new day, and a new staff.. Dooleys run wasn't UT football, and it damaged some fans.. They don't think things can go this right for long, because it hasn't in so many years now. We gotta get back to having some TN swag, because this staff is bringing it.

You're right, I don't know how Marquez North will turn out. But from Dooley's past two season's recruiting could honestly not get much worse. So when Butch got his name in on many of the top recruits left, I saw a lot of potential. I'm pretty much comparing his results of recruiting to how bad people said he was going to do here. And now that he has landed great in state talent already in what will be his first true recruiting class, I'm fairly sold that he can recruit. He's also won everywhere he's been, and after recruiting well already, I'm also fairly sold that he will have success here winning.

My biggest concern about Jones has always been that his recruiting classes at Cincinnati were bad even by Big East standards. Kelly and Hurd are great, but this is something I'm going to worry about until he beats out other SEC teams for kids out of Georgia and Florida. I'm optimistic about the way things are going too, believe me, but I just think an "I'm eating crow about Butch!" thread already is ridiculously silly.

I'm optimistic about the way things are going too, believe me, but I just think an "I'm eating crow about Butch!" thread already is ridiculously silly.

And yet he took those "recruiting classes at Cincinnati were even bad by Big East standards" and won 10 games each of the last 2 years. So say what you want but he obviously knows how to coach his players up and get the best out of them, which has been our biggest gripe for years, in that our players never really played their best.

You think recruits didn't notice what he did with those bad recruiting classes? Only now he's at an SEC school where the recruits would love to play (everyone wants to play in the SEC), instead of at a Big Easy school where hardly any top recruit wanted to play.

Everyone took notice what he did with those bad classes and now that he's in an SEC school with top notch facilities, 102,000+ stadium, and the lack of depth for top recruits to come in and make their own legacy instead of following in another kids shadow.

Now if he can win 10 games with those terrible classes and get the best out of those players, what do you think he can do with SEC caliber classes? And that's the same Kool-Aid these recruits are drinking up as well not just the fans. Then add in his dedication and commitment to the University as a whole, and their not worried about him bolting for a USC after his first season. Where Kiffin called us the USC of the east, CBJ called us his "dream job" and he wanted to "retire" here.

Yes I agree that it still has to be proven on the field. But when you consider that he wants to be here, and he did do so much with so little at Cincinnati, it's easy to see why top recruits would like to see what he can do with them and their talent as well as build their own legacy. These kids know they'll be remembered a whole lot more if they build their own powerhouse, than if they just rode the coattails of an already made powerhouse.

He has proven he can win with inferior players even by the Big Easy standards, his W-L ratio is better than Kiffin and Dooley combined, he's proven his dedication to get us back to the top, and he's convinced recruits he can do it as well. Does that mean he can do it? I don't know, but he deserves more of a chance than the last 2 coaching staffs. I would rather he gave his all and failed, than make excuses and say it's "hard to win and recruit here" like some other staffs and not even go after the players that CBJ has gone after. You don't have to be as excited as some fans, god knows we all have reservations, but you can at least give him credit for working his azz off to try and get us back to the top! That work ethic and dedication alone was sorely lacking here and everyone knows it, if he's willing to do what the others wouldn't then I'm willing to back him while he does!!!

When he gets the support of former great players and coaches that knows what it takes first hand to work hard, the struggle of the SEC schedule week in and week out, the tough fierce mentality it takes to survive and be on top. When they all believe in him, and support him, and say he has what it takes to get us back there, then by god I'm going to believe as well. I love volnation and our fans, but I will listen and believe in former great players and coaches that have been there and done that, and bleed orange through and through, before I listen to a fan. If he fails then he fails, but ANYONE that can get the respect of former great vols that laid it all out there game after game is going to get my respect as well! GBO!!!! VFL!!! VOLNATION!!! 117!!! RISE TO THE TOP!!!!

He's not going to be able to win in the SEC by pulling legacies and lifelong Vol fans from Nashville. He's got to be able to pull players of Hurd's caliber out of places like Georgia and Florida and South Carolina. I'm sorry, but I'm just not going to accept it as a given that he can recruit at a championship level until I see him getting top players from out of state.

Your caution makes sense to me. So wouldn't contest you on it. Allow me to share what I think CBJ is doing.

For years now, our better talent has gone elsewhere to play. I think Jones is first making sure that that better talents stays home. Then go after out-of-state talent.

It appears that he is doing what the UT, in my opinion, hasn't done for years. Build a real relationship with our high school coaches. Get their best players funneled our way. This is what Saban does so well in Alabama and it pays off big time.

Another key is something Vonn Bell said that is too true. Having a great player doesn't mean much unless you also have a very good supporting cast. I think CBJ is recruiting to have that type of cast so "great players" want to come to the UT. It's called strategy. It's called having a plan. It's called laying the groundwork.

I've always been a wait and see guy. But while I wait I support my team until you've lost my respect. I supported Dooley until the Missouri game. Go Butch and Go Vols.

I woke up that morning to the news of CBJ and said "you have got to be freaking kidding". Jumped on the net and researched him for about 10 minutes. I changed my tune when I saw his passion, plus Manning endorsed him. This guy gets it. He wants to be here WHEN we add crystal trophies to the case. The nay sayers will be few and far between in the coming months.

I've went from skeptical to cautiously optimistic. Too many people bought in on Dooley for me to listen to them. The rah-rah stuff that Coach Jones has been doing has been fan friendly and I appreciate his efforts there after Dooley. But it really comes down to three things - recruiting, player development, and game day preparations/coaching.

There's reason to be optimistic with the recent activity in recruiting. We have the foundations for a very solid class.

Player development, it's too early to tell, and I never followed Cinci closely but I'm thinking at programs like Cinci you have to win with what you can get and that means player development.

The big question mark in my mind is how this staff will stack up against SEC caliber coaches. It's one thing to win in the Big East.

But there definitely is reason to hope. The guy has won everywhere he's been and that's a huge upgrade over that joke of a coach Dooley.

I know I'm late to this thread, but for the record this "negavol" thinks BJ is doing a fantastic job with what his main objectives are and should be right now: instill some hope and enthusiasm in the fanbase and recruit your nads off. Well done, BJ.

Kelly jr, and Hurd would NOT have been Vols had Dooley and co. still been here. That's a FACT!

And, if Butch had been here more than 2 months before last signing day, it appears we'd have signed a few more top players, including a certain db from just south of Chattanooga, who also grew up a Vols fan but wound up in Scarlett and gray.

This thread started with a positive optimistic heartening tone...was here heredddd by like excited enthused souls...then cautious wait and seers dipped their toes in the pool...have a lil discussion in here...points back and forth...then BOOM!...Pull em out and make the water yellow...nobody excited about what Butch hath wrought is buying tickets to the SEC or NC games...but let some window shopping get us through the months before the actual games start...it won't stop you from keeping it real...I promise

Good lord. We have an irrational fan base.

1) There is no problem voicing pleasure over our recruiting. Just keep in mind we have been blessed this recruiting season with very talented in state legacies.

2) What does what I said having anything to do with you cheering for UT?

He is an unproven commodity at this level; plain and simple. Anytime morons want to jump the gun on an "eating crow" thread before the coach's first spring practice is over, I am going to knock him back down to reality.

How diplomatic of you.

I love the Vols but if you think we are the "Ferrari" of college football programs, then you must not think much of Ferrari as a car manufacurer.

Its a Ferrari with a couple of flat tires right now, but a Ferrari nonetheless. But thanks for your wet blanket approach to this thread.

I will not be totally on board until we beat Fla or bama that was the bar for this coaching hire n I still believe hart hired an 8 n 5 type guy to keep the fans coming back but never be a championship team every year. Will we get lucky n be in sec cg 1 n 5 Years sure but the expectation should 1 n 3 min.

Saying that recruiting is key n we r off to a good start
