Guys if you had your choice between teaching a first year college D end how to roll and shed a block versus a first year first round draft pick which would be easier? One of course already knows how.

An NFL coach has a billion dollar money making machine at his disposal on and off the field. Difficult? Yes, for an entirely different set of reasons.

I get the point you're making, BUT at the NFL level all things are equal. It may not seem that way but that is because of coaching. In college teams that get the best recruits have the advantage. Teams that have the money to pay the best coaches to get the best recruits win. It's pretty much as simple as that. The point where a great coach comes in is that he can make a team ranked 15 in recruiting better than 15th in the country. As an example a team like Alabama that takes the best talent and makes the best team in the country vs a team like Tennessee that currently takes in some of the best players but turns them into a mediocre team.

Doyle, if it makes any difference, what I am hearing says that there may be "something" in the works. After reading what Hart had to say, I am leaning toward UT really making an effort to get Gruden. They need to raise capital fast and need a "Hollywood" hire and Hart knows it.

All input is worth a lot to me anyway. For the record, my post was not directed toward you. It was for the ones that come into this thread and call BS on anything the guys here post.

This just feels like Randy Shannon all over again to me, except this would be a billion times bigger. I'm trying to hard not to get my hopes up, because I still think Gruden coming here is a longshot at best.

The difference in this and the Randy Shannon deal is that Dooley can't chicken out of this one. It's over his head.

For those out there that still doubt the credibility of the ones here relaying info on the situation, I have to ask, are you not paying attention?
Go back to the early days of the original thread. The outlandish things the guys were saying are now being hinted at by the media. If you listen to the Ainge show, hell he sounds like Jay posting on here about the goings on behind the scene. The media is starting to mention Gruden by name and they aren't immediately writing him off as a pipe dream. Where there is smoke, there is fire.
I am not saying that we get Gruden but there obviously something going on between UT and Chucky. I turn 42 on Nov. 21 and can't think of a better birthday gift than landing Gruden as our head coach.
Pray for no Hamilton-like snags.

I am hoping you have a happy birthday. Best thread on the interwebs:)

I wonder what would happen if Gruden went to another college team...I'm pretty sure everyone will be asking for Hart's head. I don't think Hart is that dumb to let him go anywhere else besides Tennessee for the college level.

I'd be more concerned about The Browns and Jimmy Haslam.

If good ole' Jimmy wants Gruden to the Browns and Gruden accepts, well, that's it.

BUT, I can easily see this scenario.

Haslam keeps the current HC for the Browns. Tells Gruden to go and get some college experience, new contacts, etc... and become the HC for TN. In 3 years, if the current HC at the Browns does not deliver, Gruden is basically UPSTREAMED to the Browns.

Agree...Also has Gruden ever mentioned he would like to coach at any college other than Tennessee? (Honest question if anyone knows.)

I've seen quite a few quotes of him talking about coaching but Tennessee is the only place I've seen him mention by name. :salute:

He has had interest in several jobs. He almost took the job at the U , but that fell apart. Notre Dame and Tennessee are the only 2 jobs he will seriously consider at this point. His father was on the staff there back when he was a kid. And ND is not in need of a head coach. Arkansas is not a threat , nor is any other team except for maybe Texas and from what I have heard he would still rather have this job than that one. It's Tennessee until it isn't. If anyone wants to worry about him taking a job other than this one , I would only be concerned with the NFL.

He's making case to the public on the behalf of the decision makers. When Dooley's dismissal is made public, a lot of the Doorights are going to be upset, especially when it looks like we begin a coaching search at that time.
Having people like Ainge lay the case out ahead of time helps make the change less of a shock.

Totally agree.

While I don't agree with Medic's statement that SEC is tougher than NFL, there are some elements of truth there.

Coaching at a school like Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Miss State is already a disadvantage when going up against powerhouse SEC teams day in and out.
While traditional powerhouse teams can have cycles of mediocrity, preparing week to week for such good teams and coaches with a time constraint is frustrating as well.
In the NFL, if you fall behind, the draft is there to pick you up, revenue sharing (sans Dallas) can pick you up. In the SEC, fall behind a few years, and teams try and bury you with recruiting. Money starts drying up, etc.

That's why a Gruden type hire is so important. UT can't keep falling behind.

Why does Gruden "need" college experience? He wants it. As for contacts, the guy knows everyone the past few years. If he wanted to coach NFL again, he could and would. Doesn't have to go to college to get his feet wet.

There is no harm whatsoever with thinking the way you do. Nothing is final until the press conference.

A Super Bowl winning coach doesn't need upstreaming. Gruden would not step on his mentor's toes in Cleveland (Holmgren).
