Honestly, I've heard the deal is hanging on by a string. I'm in the camp that believes there may be too many NFL options for Gruden next year. San Diego...Philly...Dallas...places he could win with what he has.
I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, I just think these monumental changes:
1. Changing the AD/admin culture
2. Fundamentally changing your philosophy on coaches pay
3. Dealing with a lame duck head coach in the process
are hard to do overnight. If the first two changes are made, even without Gruden, UT fans will be big winners in the end.
I tend to agree, but money can do crazy things to people. Jerry Jones could make him the highest paid coach in sports...any sport.
Don,
I am a lifelong University of Tennessee fan, an avid donor and an alum from the class of 2007. I grew up in East Tennessee and have been attending games at Neyland since I was able to walk. The past five years I have watched the Athletic Department and the University slowly deteriorate. I have still supported the program and done everything in my power to back the coaching staffs, players and admin. But now comes the time where changes need to be made for my support to continue. These changes need to be made for the betterment of the Athletic Department.
Friday you will be voting on the structure of the Athletic Department financially within the University. The specific amendment you will be voting on is below.
Amendment of the UT-UTFI affiliation and services agreement to change the reporting line for athletics departments personnel at UT Knoxville
As the head of the board I hope you realize that the Athletic Department should be a free standing entity within the University with the power to allocate the funds they bring in accordingly. The current structure has led to nothing but negative results for the AD and the University. This needs to be changed.
After this change is made I hope the powers that be of the University know that we need to bring in a major coaching improvement that can build back our football health. A healthy football program means a healthy University of Tennessee. If we invest in our program we will see that investment pay off. If we make a lackluster effort and investment into our football program we will get a lackluster program and lackluster results financially and on the field.
I want the best for the entire school, state, and University and the changes I have mentioned above are what needs to transpire.
Thank you and I hope you will support these ideas at the BOT meeting on Friday.
Go Vols,
Eric Q
Ok...
I said I would obviously take them but that Payton would stay in the NFL(not convinced it will be the Saints though) and Pete Carroll is only a possibility if he's fired. You don't have to be rude about it. I did mention 6 coaches before saying I don't think they're a possibility.
And yeah, I do think Carroll could be fired. He might finish below .500 for a third straight season.
If Gruden says no (which hasn't happened yet) and the money is really there, then Stoops better be our first call. Strong has always been #3 on my list.
Petrino...please no...but I've consistently heard he is on the big board.
If UT hires Petrino, it will be the final nail in the coffin with respect to the mismanagement of the football program. UT's administration has shown itself to be utterly inept, but this would take the ineptitude to even greater heights.
He said something to the effect of "I got a call from a friend at the airport yesterday and he said he saw.....No I'm not even going to go there."
Then a little later he was talking about possible coaches and Petrino came up.
"If people knew what I was told yesterday, it would start a fire in Knoxville."
Just paraphrasing but it was along these lines.
