Have you heard GP may be high on the backup plan?

No havent heard that, just guessing. If I were AD I would pursue Gruden and take temperatures of other big names but assuming I am going back to a college coach we ACTUALLY would have a chance to hire my choices would be

1. Patterson
2. Strong
3. Petrino
4. Malzahn

If I am throwing sensibility out the window my top 4 would be

1. Gruden
2. Lovie
3. Pete Carroll
4. Sean Payton

This probably seems like nitpicking, or a weird issue to have, but I always have an issue with guys who cant make much eye contact. I noticed with Kiffin that he would oftn look down while speaking, or look away. Petrino has done that too. Not saying it means anything really, it can just appear disingenuous to some. I stress the word appears.

Salary does not equal total compensation.

So his potential earnings would jump him all the way in the top 10? That is a slightly crazy thought because other coaches have incentives as well...He would have to make an extra 1 mil in incentives and that is if the other top 20 do not make their own incentives. Tennessee could out match Louisville for Strong if he wanted to come and if Tennessee was interested...

My list:

1 Gruden
2 Petersen (pipe dream)
3 Patterson
4 Strong
5 Petrino (if his reputation hasn't tarnished his ability to recruit)

Pipe Dreams:

1 Kelly
2 Carroll

DO NOT WANT

1 Smart
2 Cut
3 Mullen
4 Gundy
5 Davis
6 Dykes
7 Stoops (I think that he has underachieved)

I may get flamed but if we can't get Gruden or a big name, I'll take Mullen all day. He's been in the SEC a long time as a coordinator and HC and he's done a good job at MSU considering the level of talent he has. I agree with your pipe dreams, would love to have them but don't think its possible. I don't think Patterson can get us to compete for SECC. If TCU was in the SEC, he wouldn't be as highly regarded as he is now. Petrino, I think anyone that's read any of my post know my feelings on that POS. I wouldn't mind Stoops but I think he falls in the pipe dream category. I think if the big name guys say no, we will get Mullen or Strong. May not be exactly what we want as fans but both HUGE upgrades over Dools.

I noticed that too with Kiffin. Bothered me too at the time.

AD is going to look real stupid again if they wait around while Arky, UK and Auburn get who they want and they happen to all be in our top 5 wants.

I don't think they are waiting around. There have been contacts made just like these other schools. We just haven't publicly cut ties.

What if....an MOU is actually signed and Gruden wants to be here, but we are trying to make it look like Hart stepped in and sealed the deal. Not saying that is what is happening, but do imagine the possibility that Hart felt circumvented when the boosters started talking to Gruden.

Agree, But didn't he turn down the Gators?

Big East does not equal major conference.

Strange, I know, in our shallow minds why anyone would turn down the mighty SEC. Maybe, just maybe, he's in a great situation for him. He gets to dominate the BE every season, go to a BCS bowl/final four playoff every few years and is generally stable.

Contrast that with the high-risk-high reward SEC where the average tenure for a HC is roughly 4 years and declining fast. Average tenure for African American coaches in general is only four years.

Strong has, according to ESPN 680 Louisville's Jason Anderson, retention bonuses increase his overall package to around $12.6 million in the next four years.

So tell me again why he would come to Tennessee?

I can't "like" this enough. Agree 100%. Mullen or Strong would definitely be upgrades.

Not knocking any info but if you believe it's only smoke and nothing cooled then why do you think those guys were drumming up the significance of the BOT meeting?
I think all the Grudenites need to form a backup plan mentally as coach or risk being very dissapointed. Even SBV said things cooled. You've essentially got 2 guys left who have said they still feel confident mixed with a whole lot of this BOT is important talk. While others are saying the BOT meeting in and of itself won't do too much.
Assimilate the data yourselves and think about it.

Dissapointment does not kill you... we have been disapointed with Dooley for 3 years.. we are still here.

My question is why is it so important to you non-believers to protect us foolish Grudenites, who appointed you our guardians. You can try to hide your motives under the idea that you our out to "protect" if you want to... but I am not buying it:banghead2:

That is a possibility and the AD will never admit publicly that Hart was not the one pushing any deal with any coach. I think Hart is a smart man and has a timeline as to what he feels is best for the situation....I hope that is the case Lex...

All positive theories are welcome. Do you have any info/gut feelings that would corroborate this?

IF that us the case Hart needs to get over it and help close the deal.

Hart looks like a hero and the fanbase becomes totally understanding of why Dooley was still in orange until after KY.

I don't care who gets the credit for sealing the deal as long as Gruden is wearing an orange and white visor with a Power F'ing T on it!!!

I have friends that are connected to the Louisville program. They tell me that their biggest fear is that Louisville with stay in the Big East and lose Charlie because of it.

It isn't just the SEC. If Louisville finds there way to the Big 12, they have a better chance of keeping Strong for a longer period.

Personally, I think the entire issue of control between the AD and Chancellor is vastly overrated. There are issues there, but it's mostly financial. Look at how many chances players like DaRick and Janzen Jackson had. Pointing to Lofton and Lanier as examples is fairly weak. It's not like we're talking about denying Peyton Manning entrance to the school.

If Jon Gruden is not coming to Tennessee because of a perceived issue in turning down or keeping eligible players that have no business in college in the first place, then that tells me he was never interested in coaching college football in the first place. Dealing with these issues is a big part of the job - anywhere.

I think the AD and Chancellor issues can be fixed, but the best way to fix them is hire a coach that everyone respects. There are other issues too such as different factions of boosters that all want their own way. This is East Tennessee - the definition of good old boy network. That's as much of the problem, IMO, as anything between the Chancellor and AD.

If Gruden has real interest in coming to TN, the big money people will work it out, IMO. If it doesn't get worked out, then I doubt Gruden's interest was ever serious.

Cool, if that's true, then I think we get Gruden. I believe he is interested for sure!
