Official Jon Gruden Thread VII

Our Duckman visitor put it together and that is the temp name. Official pig site banned all Gruden threads so they had a migration to their new sty.

So those are real Arky fans? I thought for sure it was just to a rise out of Vol fans.

Here are my honest Grudenite thoughts:
1. The news got out way earlier than was intended.
2. The only way to keep Gruden from having to answer direct questions about the job is to retain Dooley.
3. The only way to keep Petrino or any sitting coach from publicly telling UT "no" (even if they weren't approached) is to keep Dooley.
4. If it is Gruden we are on his announcement time table...which means it makes sense to keep Dooley.
5. I think Gruden has given a list of demands, and that those have been answered with "yes"

These are my thoughts on the timing, and what has happened to this point.

I could be wrong....but I don't think I am.

it looks like a lot of little birdies have been visiting Lex lately and chirping a positive song.

But then Gruden would be directly linked to the firing of Dooley and it would look very unprofessional on his part. You are forgetting that key component.

This is not on the fans timeline or even TN's timeline.

I agree with you. I just don't want to wait until 12/17.

Before Gruden can be announced as the next HC there has to be a vacancy

You cannot announce a termination one day and announce his replacement the next day.

UTAD has to look like there was a coaching search for a few weeks

Dooley and Gruden are friends, doubt Gruden wants to bring any shame upon his friend with a quick announcement.

Gruden still has to uphold his contract with MNF and work out the buyout of said contract with his other sponsors.

It is not cut and dry on the announcement, as been stated numerous times it is fluid.

Here is another quote.

"Jon is itching to get back in to coaching. His last payment from Tampa Bay comes this season. I know for a fact he has started putting together a possible staff for next season. I know there have been reports that he is thinking about Philadelphia and some other places, but Jon is interested in the University of Tennessee more than any NFL job. That's something to watch closely in the next few weeks."

I find it amazing how many nellie-naysayers are in here. Heck if it doesn't happen then that is that. But it looks better today than it did yesterday. Just think we could be pigville which realistically had no chance at all.

ESPN will undoubtedly want to contriol the announcement and the message. Since Gruden is terminating a contract with ESPN, ESPN most likely will have a say.

I work in DC - know people who run around in the same circles as JLC and remember him from the Post.
If he said it, he believes it, probably because he's picked it up along the way from his NFL sources.

The exact comment is:

Here's the actual audio of the interview here. Coaching talk at roughly 14:00 mark (exact comment at 14:19)

Would it have killed them to ask JLC a follow-up question on Gruden?

Not that surprising. I think I've developed a nervous tic because of all of the negative results over the past 5 years, myself. We are a beaten down fanbase. That is why we need a hire like this.

Here is another quote.

Well, that about settles it for me. If JLC is saying this about Gruden, and reporting that Gruden puts Tennessee above all of the other potential openings in the NFL I'm good to go.

Not that this means anything, but JLC was the first reporter to predict Washington to be the team to trade up for the #2 pick in last years draft. Everyone else said Cleveland-even Schefter for a while, and Schefter has always had a direct line to Shanahan. If JLC did not have a stong inclination that Gruden favors Tennessee he would not have said anything.
