Official Jon Gruden Thread VII

Yesterday on college football live they were talking about Dooley pretty much being gone and the host said does Tennessee need that "rockstar hire" or just someone stable to come in and rebuild. Douchey Palmer said he doesn't think it matters cause Lane Kiffin was a rock star hire and look what happened. He said we need someone that is a great recruiter cause UTs current talent isn't close to what it was when he was playing against UT. He said Strong or Petrino would be good options. At the beginning of the convo when the guy said "rockstar hire" I knew he was talking about Gruden but no one mentioned his name. I think Gruden has told ESPN he doesn't want analyst mentioning his name when it comes to coaching gigs. Jmo

I am beginning to believe this. For them not to mention his name with all the speculation means one of two things. It is out of the realm of possibility or they have been told not to mention him as a candidate. I am beginning to believe the latter.

Anyone else find it funny that Arkansas's actual forum is so convinced that Gruden wouldn't go to Arkansas that they lock and delete all Gruden threads and yet there is a group of like 50 people that started another site to play with themselves? Those 50 are so convinced they're getting Gruden. Them waiting for the announcement to happen tomorrow is like waiting for the world to end in December. They actually believe it's going to happen :eek:lol:

That's why I thought it was a Vol fan just playing a joke.

Who cares? We're not getting him either

Tennessee is like Alabama,LSU. They are a sleeping giant. They will not play around. They will give a coach 3 or 4 years to meet Tennessee expectations, give him their full support, till the losing continues and then dump him and move on to another till they get their man. Timing is everything. A monster coach has to be either leaving a certain type of job. usually a NFL coach moving to college or one young and aggressive like Saban at Michigan state to LSU.Pete Carroll to USC. Holtz to Arkansas.Saban to Bama.

There are some great coaches out there who are at what we consider "lesser schools". Peterson/Boise State, Patterson/TCU,Dykes/ Louisiana Tech,Iowa State/Rhodes, Gundy Okie lite...... Put one of these guys in a SEC powerhouse school with SEC recruiting capabilities and look out. Arkansas is a bit different. Our recruiting capabilities are not what Tennessee's are. We need a coach (like Petrino) who knew the game so well and could coach talent up.

found this post on Hogville. :)

Just playing devil's advocate here....but how do his comments land if you are a NFL owner trying to land him as a coach. We don't need a bidding war. Also, what does statement does it make to the NFL that he would rather be coaching college than the pros. How many other NFL coaches would think about telling the league that they aren't the only game in town. I just think the NFL is a little prostituting to the purity of the game of football. JMO.

This might start to become more of a trend. These guys are control freaks, and you can't get more control than in big-time college football. In the NFL you only get 1 first round pick a year, and your GM might trade that away. In college you get as many as you can sign.

But, based on what I have seen out of Gruden these past few years with the QB camp, the work he has done locally with HS football I think he enjoys the coaching aspect of it-and not just the scheme, but the teaching. You don't get that in the NFL, except for grooming a QB. In college it's all about recruiting and player development. I think a guy like Gruden is actually turned on more by what he can do as a coach in college than in the NFL. And besides-he's already been to the mountain top in the pros.

Here is another quote.

"Jon is itching to get back in to coaching. His last payment from Tampa Bay comes this season. I know for a fact he has started putting together a possible staff for next season. I know there have been reports that he is thinking about Philadelphia and some other places, but Jon is interested in the University of Tennessee more than any NFL job. That's something to watch closely in the next few weeks."

Who said that? The La Canfora guy?

Until people quit making such asinine remarks about Gruden and MNF.

There is nothing asinine about the responses people have provided on this question. The responses are legitimate and have value and bring merit to your question. Either you do not want to think they bring merit or you do not have an understanding of how things work in the professional world nor understand you don't treat friends that way and remain friends afterwards.

Grudenville, Is this place for real? That's got to be the greatest troll site ever. Which ever one of you guys put that together is awesome. :hi: Nice one. Had me going for a second. :)

I never knew grudenville was actually a website. I just typed it in and it looks like a replica of hogville. Jeez, the Piggy fans are delusional. :eek:lol:

Yep. He also said that Gruden would be more interested in Tennessee than any other job on the radio in DC today.

i think he would also show any coach that respect. i wonder... given they are friends, if one of Gruden's demands, which is one of the discussed "hurdles", was that Dooley finishes out the season.. or maybe that UT does NOT try to gouge Dooley's buyout...

Probably true. Anybody worth their salt wants to see how you treated the last guy and see you did it the right way. That gets magnified when your friends with the guy.
