Serious question: What would be the purpose of any kind of smoke screen? I have heard that idea thrown around, but I can't for the life of me figure out why AD would even try to disguise any hire when it happens. Why would they try to create a surprise?

Because if in the event he says no. It won't be like our last coaching search when we got Dooley after several reports of coaches not being interested or some of our basketball searches before Buzz Peterson. When option 1 turns you down publicly, then things can go south in a hurry.

I hope the AD is done with buyouts with good teams. Looks bad on us imo.

It doesn't look good to recruits when we get blowed out by 40 either. But I see your point. I just think we have been struggling too much the last few years to play these type of games. OTOH I don't like it either. :unsure:

As you can see stoops loses against inferior teams. That doesn't work in the SEC. Besides as you look at those scores his defense sux!!! Stoops isn't the way to go. In fact I want any candidate but that guy on the downslide of his career!!!

The number 1 team in the country is inferior? K State is ranked in the top 10. Last year OSU got screwed out of playing for the title. You are reaching here.

Monday Gruden will be wearing an orange tie. At halftime he will announce that it will be his last MNF game. On the Nov 27 he will be named the new HC@UT. He will be interviewed at the SEC Championship game and will have an impressive list of 4&5 star recruits. I know people don't believe me because I'm ulgy with a noticeable sinus problem and herpes blisters the size of golf balls. It's going to be a great day to be a Tennessee Vol Nov 27.

I think that there are multiple angles.

One theory is that they don't want it to seem that they were negotiating with Gruden while Dooley was HC.

Another theory is that Gruden's camp has been insistent on keeping it silent until they are ready to announce it.

Yet another theory is that because of the magnitude of the deal, they want to limit having to answer questions about it, so they purposely mislead people to deflect.

Of course, all of these could be true, or none of them could be.

Hart could very well make a decision before then. That's what Hubbs posted on VQ. I think it makes since.

A home run hire that late ?could? save or even bump the recruiting class but if you blow the recruting class to delay for a hire, it better be a home run hire....

thanks for the effort, but it only took UT a few days to find, interview, and hire Dooley so that one seems strange. Gruden's camp has nothing to gain by waiting so...... and they will have to answer possible questions no matter when it happens, JMO.

I think Cheek gets canned anyway. He is at least guaranteeing the AD 18 million, so I would love to cut ties with him now that money has been negotiated.

I don't know who comes here and works miracles. I have been through these UT coaching searches since Doug Dickey left for his "dream job." The Vols have not landed a hot coach since the Majors hire. Fulmer was in house. Kiffin had pro-experience but had just been fired and well Dooley had an SEC pedigree, some recruiting prowess and a big picture. We all know that Majors had ups and downs and it took Coach Fulmer to get us to the promised land. There are no results guaranteed with Gruden, but he is a major figure in the football landscape and would obviously bring some excitement. Problem is we don't have a former Vol to come home and lead. Jay Graham is as close as it gets and he may not be ready to take the helm. Obviously Gruden has some connections. It may be old school and unrealistic but I miss the days where the Tennessee coaching tree was able to provide and the fan base didn't demand a mercenary hire.
