I just don't buy this "complete control is causing conflict" angle. Not for a second.
It's Jon Gruden, one of the few coaches to reach the pinnacle at the next level, a Super Bowl Champion. This isn't some guy on his way up looking to make a name for himself to hopefully plateau into big leagues. This guy's already done that. He's earned his brand, if you will.
By even sniffing him as a coach, anyone with common sense knows what it would take to land a fish that big. It won't be money that brings him here. He could have already jettisoned himself onto any of the desperate NFL teams over the last 4 years. If he comes here, it will be because he wants to install his legacy on the field. He can't do that with a ridiculous checks and balances system that a lot of no-name coaches are forced to work under. He knows, and we know, what he will be capable of the college level, and to make that truly work and be "all in", we have to play by the rules he sets.
This shouldn't be some shock to the AD, and I'm sure it isn't. Reports otherwise seem to be people either naive of how something like this would actually go down or complete smoke to work an angle to maximize publicity.
