To hire Strong will cost UT approximately $9 million minimum: 2.5 million buyout - 3.5 mill for staff - 3 mill for Strong.

To hire Gundy will cost UT approximately $10 million minumum: 3.0 million buyout - 3.5 mill for staff - 4 mill for Gundy.

Note - $3.5 mill is the amount UT is currently paying for staff per USA today!

Note 2 - Gruden wanted approx $4.5 mill for staff or thereabouts.

Total amount to close deal with Gruden was reported to be $10 million!!!

Think about that Vol fans..... Think about!!! Let it sink in!!!

Tennessee doesn's want to pay Gruden and Co. $10 mill but would pay Gundy $10 mill or Strong $9 mill!!!

The fans need to rattle the cages!!!!

Your math is so far off it's not even funny. It was way more than that to hire Gruden.

Give us some numbers smart guy.

Well just amortize it over 5 years....

Strong: 35 mil

Gundy: 40.5 mil

Gruden: 50 mil

Gruden is roughly 25% more expensive than Gundy and over 40% more expensive than Strong. That is pretty good coin. Bottom line is Grude is more expensive than both and would probably want guaranteed money.

OR.... Hart put all his chips on the table with Gruden and Gruden passed (Friday), and now Hart is scrambling to find an option B.

He'd have to be the dumbest AD in the land if he put all of his chips in one corner without having locked up the deal.

You never are 100% until they've signed the contract. Always have to have a backup plan. The week and a half of silence/no action/no reporting is telling to me. It's either telling this has been in the bag or it is telling that we're screwed.

a new angle to this mystery... this is better than Agatha Christie

Agatha is the only candidate who has admitted to having been interviewed. Based on that little known factoid, she is the unofficial leader in the clubhouse for the UT head coaching gig...

I'm not sure and the people I've talked to aren't sure either. Hard to imagine it's someone that is still active, but stranger things have happened. Like I said earlier, folks are being very coy about all of this. I can't read if they know more than they're saying or if they just really don't have specifics.

Would make sense for a person in the same situation Jon is in. Good coach working for a network. I'm still on the Gruden train but this is a very interesting twist.

The plot thickens.... who would you suspect he could be doing this for??? Dungy sounds GREAT to me

Yes, Dungy sounds great; but the scenario is much more believeable if it is a current NFL coach who is prohibited from doing that during the season. Jon might do that for his brother.

Cowher would have to be the only person for whom Gruden would do that. Dungy is never coming back to coaching, he's too old.

Another GREAT name... now that is what i am talking bout... get a BIG NAME like we were promised

What about Jeff Fisher?

We could start talking about this all being a smokescreen for Bill Belichick. That would make some trolls heads explode!

THAT is my opinion when I am in my pessimistic mode. Out with the negative waves man!!!!! Don't scare me like that.

for the record I still BELIEVE Gruden is a possibility.

But I am forced to stop and think a few things I didnt think before.

First, I really thought we could get Grduen last time, and we didnt even come close to a Gruden-level coach. We got Dooley.

Second, Gruden ALWAYS puts his name out there for coaching jobs.

Third, Maybe there are no smokescreens at all. Maybe things actually played out the way the media has reported them and the way Hart said it would.

Finally, I am always beholden to the belief that reality is always much more mundane than fantasy.

BUT, I can still believe in Gruden coming to UT. But I have prepared myself to not be devastated when someone else is given the job.

I would almost guarantee Gruden would generate more revenue that would make this at least even across the board.

...and worth ever penny of the extra coin.

This is what im afraid of, the OGs were spot on, this was going down, and suddenly somebody pulled the emergency brake and we have been spinning out of control since. Gruden was coming, started lining up assistants, weeks of "negotiations" and then something happened and the deal was nixed, now we are running back down the aisle trying to find someone willing to say "I do" before everyone leaves the ceremony.

Could be that the fire got too hot too quick and some water had top be sprayed on it and at the right time it will be stoked again...who knows? Would love to have Gruden, but i find myself more now just hoping its not this one, or this one........

Hey guys, I've been lurking around here for quite a while now but I haven't posted before. I've been a vol since I was born. My first jersey was #16. I've been to almost every home game since 2000. I'm currently a student at UT and I'm ridiculously excited about a new coach. I grew up in the Fulmer years, and I admit I wouldn't mind having him back (with some great assistants and a new game plan). I liked Kiffin while he was here and I've hated his guts ever since that piss poor excuse for a press conference. I liked CDD on a personal level, but I never felt that he knew what he was doing on the field. Anyway, like I said I'm very excited about a new coach and I'm very much hoping it's one Mr. Jon Gruden. I don't buy the story that's been put out there. It just doesn't sit right with me. Money for assistants seems a little too convenient of an excuse...
I just wanted to introduce myself.

Oh, and Go Big Orange!

I believe Hart had a "plan B", but he could have given Gruden until 11/30 to make up his mind on coming before going to get "plan B"

I can also believe that Gruden was never plan A with Hart. Maybe he was plan A with the boosters, but not with Hart.

Maybe Hart planned all along to start his search after the championships were over because many of the coaches he wanted were playing this weekend.

After Dooley was fired I thoought that getting JG was wishful thinking, but after spending time on this board; I jumped on the Grude train and never looked back. Now whomever the AD hires will be a huge let down. It will be like getting to open a present on X-mas eve and picking what you think is going to be what you were begging for parents for, but that present turned out to be a pack of tube socks.
