Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIII

Call me crazy but maybe Gruden didn't want to work for/with Currie no matter how much you paid him.

That's entirely possible, and after seeing the debacle today, I wouldn't blame him. It's also possible that the 300 reports from almost every single member of the media who actually cover this and the NFL were actually right when they said he wasn't truly interested in a college job this time.

I believe we fired our shot at him and he said no. We had crappy back up plans if that happened. I believe that's why some were so confident, that we were making such an offer that no one would say no. But Gruden is rich enough to not be swayed just by money.

Heck, I hope at this point he feels so sorry for Vol Nation he changes his mind and asks for the job.

Thought you said you weren’t caving?

I still believe what i was told to be true. However, the dynamics of the $hit show that has happened in the last 48 hours can’t be ignored. Currie has proven that he can’t be trusted and he hedged his bets with the man who got him hired.

I do not think people are unappreciative of their donations. It's the way they have apparently tried to use their power to their own benefit...i.e...the Tennessee Screwjob.

The thing about this is, the donations are absolutely 100 percent proven. The second half is pretty much conspiracy theory.

The Gruden Thread? Is that what it’s about? Hope is a great thing. I hoped we would get Gruden. Real life is John Currie extracting dignity from a crushed program I love. And you have people spreading false hope and false info to those of us who plan events, weddings, birthdays, chores, everything around Tennessee football because we love it. Go Vols. Go away trolls.

Sounds like you may need a new hobby. May I suggest something calming. Clay art or painting might work for you.

It's important to remember sometimes that we all want the same thing.

Haslam has pretty much proven he don't know a thing about assembling a football team. He don't know how to draft in Cleveland and he don't know jack about how to get a good football staff at UT. His moves are out there for all too see. He is a bad JOKE of a owner and decision maker in anything football related! If he wants to donate then donate, but he needs to stay out of any freaking business of telling UT who to hire for AD or Coach. The people have endured enough of these asinine decisions. It's time for the fans to band together in a unified front. Enough and it stops now.

Plenty of boosters that have money, just because a man donates money shouldn't make him the ruler of all things UT. I could care less how much money he gives if he is trying have a monopoly on everything. The University is bigger than one man, even Jimmy Haslem. He isn't the President, and he should not be in control of every call. Heck his decision making skills are CRAP just like his BROWNS. Good grief he could donate 200 BILLION and it still don't make him a good decision maker. Haslam needs to get out of UT and go DESTROY the Browns with all his money, it hasn't did Cleveland one bit of good and it sure as heck isn't helping UT either. Tennessee can get donors, we need competence and that is in short supply to a few in total power. It has to be STOPPED.

The real world does not work in this fashion. UT academics are bigger than the football program. The Haslams have donated massively to that part of the institution. They are entrenched and there is no removing them, even if the wild conspiracy that they didn't want UT football to have success were true.

One more time, Jim and Jimmy are different people. The Haslam who wields power and donates massively to UT is the father of the Browns owner, who also donates massively, but not as much as his father. Big Jim doesn't own or run the Browns and has nothing to do with their football being good or bad.

How do you explain the Vols before the last 10 years? Because 20 years ago things were going pretty well. They have been huge boosters with major influence during the highs too. Who do you think allowed Johnny to be forced out and got Phil hired?

The Browns have had 2 winning seasons in the last 19 years. The Haslam's have owned them for 4 and a half seasons.
I am 51 so been a fan for over 40 years, 1 Championship. Yeah they were pretty well but never had a bear Bryant , Steve Spurrier, Urban Myer, Nick Saban and now we can’t even compete with Memphis, Central Florida, South Florida, Florida Atlantic much less 90% of power 5 schools in hiring a head coach

The man who played for General Neyland and has given a couple of hundred million dollars to UT doesn't own the Browns. His son does. Big Jim is the man who is constantly accused of being an old power monger who loves throwing 10s of millions of dollars at UT to make sure it's mediocre.

Jimmy is the owner of the Browns. He only gives UT 5-10 million dollars a year most years. He's the one who can't get the Browns winning. It's a real shame because they were winning at the highest level before he bought them.

Bill, the Gov of Tennessee, is the head of the BoT and gives the University around 2 million per year last I saw. He's Big Jim's younger son.

Can no one grasp the amount of money this family has donated? Does no one realize that Tennessee Athletics facilities (mind you is one of if not THE biggest selling points for recruits) is one of the best in nation, due largely to this family?

People have this assumption that just because someone is worth an exponential amount of money, the amount they donate (even when it's in the 10mil+) is minuscule and meaningless.

Edited: I just re-read this. I'm sorry if this came off as me being rude. That was not my intention.

So you actually believe the Haslam family are morons, they hate UT football and give 10s of millions of dollars to the University in order to keep it mediocre?

So you actually don’t believe its reasonable to understand they are politically driven for power?

Championships are a crap shoot. Especially in the AP poll days. Tennessee was the 8th winningest school in the nation between 1970 and 2008. The fact that we stink out loud now is a multi-faceted and multi-year problem. It's not because a booster sits around playing game of thrones with UT football.

I don't know about that calming thing with painting. I get pretty pissed when I go over the lines.

Probably doesn't help that I'm using this, though:
