The problem with this hire isn't Coach Jones. No doubt he is a fine coach and has had some success.
What bothers me is that this hire has all the sounds of apathy. A settlement hire. We all knew Gruden was a long shot, and many of us chose to believe (with or without sources) because we wanted more.
Facts are Jones has a 0.6% winning percentage in his coaching career (yes upgrade from Dooley). He achieved this is a MUCH weaker conference. When you look at the names of coaches in the SEC and compare them to Jones, where would you rank him....where would the recruits rank him?
This hire is not swinging for the fence, it is a stop gap hire...just fill the seat with "potential" or a "strong" hire but not a "great" or "exciting" hire.
As some one stated earlier- we were shopping for a Ferrari at Big Lots!
This guy was above average in his previous conference and now has to play with the big boys. And recruit against the Big Boys. I think we all can reason the outcome...
Hope I'm wrong!
Those saying get behind him or you are not a VFL are accepting and enabling mediocrity. When my "A" student child brings home a report card of "C's", I still love her but I am not going to celebrate!
I will cheer for my team now and dream big again with the next hire...which I fear may be all too soon.
