Official Selection Sunday Thread

We should've been a higher seed but a play-in game is better than no game at all. The last couple of years we watched the selection show and didn't see our name in the bracket. Those teams that barely missed making the tourney and they would love to be in our position. Perspective. We can beat Iowa and we will.

Tennessee is one of the most underseeded teams according to BPI. Just showed it on ESPN. Said we should be an 8 seed according to BPI

Well I will say this about CCM - I think he is a mediocre coach on his best day.... I feel like he is a con man for taking 1.5 mill a year from the University for his results on the court - specifically barely eking out one NCAA play-in game in three years. Pearl was and is many times the coach that CCM will ever be.......

This one is not blinded by the Dark Side! Ditto this!

Because we were the last 4 in of the expansion. We are playing for that final spot.

This answer confuses me even more. I my mind, that last teams in would be the lowest seeds. I am obviously missing something here...

And you will continue to be ridiculed.

By idiots that think this team didn't under-achieve? I don't think he cares. No excuse for this team to be in a play in game. Next year will be the 4th and we are set to take a leap backward unless he can somehow convince Stokes to stay.

Thanks for the simple response, and I understand adding games is about revenue. But that didn't answer my question as to why 11 seeds are playing in, and lower ranking seeds aren't...

The committee breaks down the 68 slots into those which are automatic to the conferences and then those that are the at-large bids. My understanding is that the play-in games are the 4 bottom ranked teams in these two groups. Tenn. is in the last 4 in of the at-large bids.

Will someone please take the time to explain to me the "play in" system. In my mind, it should be for those in the lowest seeds, those who were the last to get in. Not quite sure why we are playing Iowa when there are teams ranked below us not having to play in. Thanks in advance.

About the top 40 major seeds are for the most part guaranteed non-play in games. Take a look at NCAA's rpi rankings and it mostly follows that. The lower tier mid major conferences even though their RPI's are much lower than ours they are guaranteed non-play in games. So the majors after about RPI of 40 are competing for the play-in games. For instance, BYU and Nebraska both had RPI's in the 30's so they don't have to play in. Also, how high they go with RPI with the majors depends on how the lower tier tournaments go. If a surprise team wins a tournament and gets a guaranteed spot you are competing with another team who might have an RPI higher than yours like a St. Joseph's. They went pretty high this year I think NC State had an RPI of 56.

So you want the 15 & 16 seeds in play ins?

They are automatic qualifiers they don't have to play-in.

UT is in a pretty easy bracket.....the only team that scares me is Louisville. Duke is nothing special and we played with Wichita Stage right down to the end.

We can be happy or disappointed. We can call it a play in game or Round 1. Whatever. Over the years, the number of tournament teams have grown considerably. For example, I picked 1964 NCAA tournament for no reason and looked it up on Internet -- it had 25 teams. Over the years, the tournament has grown. I may be wrong but I bet someday, there could be as many as 80 teams with Round 1 consisting of 32 teams playing up for 16 to spots to join the 48 instead of 8 teams playing in to join 60. That wouldn't add any time to tournament and make the week between the conference championships and the start of the tournament a full week, extending March Madness and television revenues. A team might have to have a 8 seed to make the tournament without a play in. If that happens, that year's #81, #82, and #83 teams will cry foul. Point is one day a play in team could win it all. Just like the lottery, you can't win, if you don't play.

It is now up to Coach Martin to get his guys ready to for the play-in game. They have got to show the same intensity for this game that they've had the last couple games. No other way around it.

If losing to Iowa means we get rid of Zo I'm all for it, I'm sorry. He is not the guy to lead this program to where it could/should be. He just doesn't "have it." We've got the right guy's for football and for baseball, just need one for basketball. Play-in game? We shouldn't even be anywhere near the bubble to begin with. JMO
