Announcers kept saying it was unintentional. I disagree. Lay on your belly. There's no standing up motion that starts with someone putting their legs up.

How could it not be obstruction? The runner gets a clear path to his next base unless the fielder is actively trying to field a ball. I don't see anyway you can change that rule.

By literal definition of the word "obstruction", yes he was an obstruction. What I am saying is that type of obstruction should be exempt from the rule because of the circumstance of the play. 3B was making a play on the ball, and he wasn't even in line with 3B and home plate.

Then he should have caught the ball. He was no longer fielding it when he obstructed Craig. It would have been hard for him to get out of the way anyway but putting the feet up made it an easy call.

The rule book cites an example that is identical to what happened.

Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered "in the act of fielding a ball." It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the "act of fielding" the ball. For example: an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner.

Main problem I have is the question of a baseline. Just a crappy way for a game to end. Nothing middlebrooks can do but attempt to catch the baseball. Legs being in the air isn't what caused the fall, IMO.

Base runner gets 3ft left and right of the physical baseline. Craig was well within his allotted 3ft.

We'll be playing in October again next year. This roster is built to compete for many years to come. We'll get another chance. Good season.

They need to put Oquendo with Craig on playing 3rd. It's a corner base like first. He has a good enough arm I think. Move Freese to make room for Adams.

Don't know we'll do with shortstop. Kozma is useless at the plate and the back half of the batting lineup is killing us in the playoffs. Guys on 560am in Memphis the other day think the Cards will look to move Miller for help on the left side of the infield. Shortstop mainly.

Question is will Mozeliak try to keep Beltran another year.

We have a strong rotation that we can look to move Miller for a solid everyday SS instead of rotating Kozma and Deacalso based on matchups. I do believe Freese is gone.

There are no solid starting SS on the market because they are so rare. You don't trade them.

I don't want them to move Miller either. I think they were just speculating on why Miller isn't pitching. Most people think it's just an innings count or fatigue, but Matheny has said several times he's fine, no limits, and they feel confident using him. Cardinals have no reason to lie. It's not like Boston would have been blindsided by Miller pitching. It's not like game planning for a qb in football. I believe they were saying no reason to lie unless they want to trade him.

Even if they did want to trade him, there aren't really any great shortstops teams would part with is there? Like zjcvols said, you find one and you hold on to him.

Miller isn't just a young prospect. He's a guy the Cards have put a lot of work into and has developed into a great pitcher at the major league level.

My guess is that Waino, Miller, Wacha, and Martinez will be in the rotation with about 5 guys fighting for the 5th spot.

Jaime Garcia will be in the 5th spot (you need a lefty to mix it up and when he's on, he's on)...

Waino, Wacha, Jaime, Miller, Martinez, and there are rumors of trading Miller, Lynn and Adams and one other to get Tulowitzki from the Rockies, or Andrus or the #1 prospect Jurickson Profar...we'll see what happens.
