Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

I'm excited to see how well Kolten Wong has done in Spring Training thus far. I think a lot of people were overly critical of him after very limited exposure in the playoffs last year, so it's great to see him swinging the bat so well. I hope he's in the running for NL ROY this season.

Wacha is looking great as well - pitched like a boss today. I'm also feeling like Carlos Martinez may be making a run for the fifth rotation spot. Wainwright, Miller, Wacha, Lynn and Martinez would be very, very nice indeed.

Lynn, Kelly, and Martinez all are battling for a rotation spot. Waino, Wacha, and Miller are the only locks.

I'd say Lynn has a spot.

I would think so just because he isn't awful and eats up innings, even though they sometimes come only 4 or 5 at a time. My guess would be Martinez comes out of the bullpen. Kelly was throwing great as a starter when he finally got his chance in the 2nd half of the season last year. 10-2 in July-August-Sep.

Oddly enough there's an article about this on the Cards website:

Lots of cardinals fans at autozone park tonight for the exhibition but there's no way they're going to play. Bummer

I wish they'd just called the game sooner. Everyone there knew it was going to be rained out but we sat there till it was made official anyway.

Just like last year's opener.

Opening day lineup:

M. Carpenter, 3B
K. Wong, 2B
M. Holliday, LF
A. Craig, RF
Y. Molina, C
M. Adams, 1B
J. Peralta, SS
P. Bourjos, CF
A. Wainwright, P

I thought we got Bour to be a lead off guy? Carp needs to be in the 2 hole

Carpenter was a stud last year at getting on base in the leadoff spot - that's what leadoff hitters are supposed to do. He's in exactly the right place.

The Cardinals traded for Bourjos because he's perhaps the best defensive CF in the game. Jon Jay was terrible out there last year, so the change was sorely needed. Bourjos also has a solid bat and can steal some bases, so he'll be a very helpful upgrade.

In any case, Matt Carpenter put up an MVP caliber season as our leadoff hitter last year. Matheny would be pretty crazy to move him.

Lol at Cardinals being ranked 1st.

It's like one of 50 preseason lists in which the Cardinals have been ranked #1 - what's surprising about this one? Ultimately these rankings mean jack squat, but the Cardinals are loaded and widely regarded as one of the best teams in baseball.

Also, when your team loses two rotation members to TJ surgery in spring training, your outlook necessarily gets worse.

Stupid ESPN blackout.

4 walks from Wainwright today? IIRC that was his total after like 6-7 starts last year.

One of them was intentional, but yeah. To be fair, his walk numbers last year were insanely good.

Still, 7 scoreless innings and 9 strikeouts is a great start.

It's gonna be a fun year.

It will be. Best Cardinals team top to bottom in fielding, hitting, and pitching that they've had in a few years. I'm looking forward to watching Miller and Wacha develop more this year and to see Rosenthal become one of the better closers in baseball.
