Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

I have to root for the 'Stros, here... I'm sorry to say why but here it is:

Nobody will deny right now that Houston is the hottest team in the National League, and probably the only team with a realistic shot at taking down the Mets. And as hot as the Yankees are in the American League, they could very well make the playoffs.

I would kill myself if the Mets and the Yankees played eachother in the World Series. I would lose weeks of valuable sports coverage, ESPN would cancel all other programming to talk Mets-Yankees.

So, go Houston and go Minnesota.

I think the Padres and Dodgers have just as good if not better shot at the Mets than the Astros do.

The Mets have virtually no pitching (Pedro constantly injured, Glavine is average, who else is there?) and it'll be interesting to see how those bats react for the first time in October.

Either way... I'm sure we can agree it will be bad times if the Mets and Yankees face eachother in the World Series.

I feel pretty sure, however, that the Yankees are also overhyped and that there's no way they can beat the Tigers and the Twins in consecutive series.

Definitely, I won't watch if it's the 2000 WS all over again. I'll hope the Mets win, but I won't bother watching it.

IF the Cardinals don't make it, and that's looking pretty realistic right now, I'll probably pull for the A's and Twins. Shoot, the Tigers too.

Hopefully it's more like last year...

When ESPN got all pumped up and ready for a Boston vs. New York ALCS, then they both lost...

That'd be super.

Morneau for AL MVP. What say you?

I realize it's a foregone conclusion that Jeter will win it, but let's humor ourselves and pretend someone that deserves it might win it.

Well the top of the 8th was just special.

Looper (bad sign, right there huh?) comes in and allows a single and a hit to the first two batters he faces. Some Padre lines out, and I imagine Rolen was trying to double someone off... only he threw the ball away and both runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd. One wild pitch later, the Padres are up 2-1.

Right on, Cards stop the bleeding and win 4-2.

Reyes pitched very well... only gave up 1 run through 6 innings.

MVP performance by Pujols. Not just the game-winning HR in the 8th, but he also stole a base to get into scoring position to score the Cards' first run of the game. Contributed to all 4 runs.

Houston currently tied with Pittsburgh in the 12th inning.

81-76

Doug Davis (10-11, 5.02) vs. Jason Marquis (14-15, 5.80)

Looks like a loss for the Cardinals tonight. Hopefully the Pirates can knock off the Astros whenever their game gets going today.

Marquis gives another awe-inspiring performance in the Cards' loss. 6 runs over 2 innings.

Not over yet, officially, but yeah... 9-1 Brewers in the 5th.

Astros won again today, so the division lead after tonight's misery ends will be .5 game.

Brewers win 9-4.

One bit of good news from the game, this should be Marquis' last start of the season.

81-77

If both St. Louis and Houston win their last 3 games, and the Cards lead remains at 1/2 game... will they have to play their make-up game with the Giants? Because a loss to the Giants would put them in a tie with Houston right now. This could get interesting...

Yeah, they'd have to play the makeup game if they're only half a game up. Only fair to Houston.

Check out this quote from Marquis last night.

"I wish I came out with a better approach and got ahead of hitters and made better pitches, but I didn't," Marquis said. "It was one of those nights."
No, Jason, it's been one of those YEARS.

Chris Capuano (11-11, 3.87) vs. Jeff Weaver (4-4, 5.21) in game two tonight.

Tid, will your guys please hurry up and win two games so I don't feel obligated to watch the Reds every night. I can only take so much of watching Adam Dunn look like an intoxicated teradactyl at the plate.

Low and away, strike one, low and away, strike two, high and tight, check swing strike three.........
