Oil Rig Explosion

We had a meeting with the coast guard about this the other day. The reason that this has not been handed over to a government agency is because they recognize the fact that all the experts are/were in the oil industry...so let them try to handle it. Would you let a nurse operate on your family?

I hope they aren't done, because it looks like a "fail" to my admittedly ignorant eye.

Apparently there are four vents on top of the cap, so that is why so much oil was gushing out. I suppose this makes it easier to get it positioned and semi-secured/sealed without it kicking around from the pressure fluctuations. They are getting ready to work on closing the vents.

This guy kills me.

The Associated Press: 'Furious' Obama heading to Gulf for spill update

"I would love to just spend a lot of my time venting and yelling at people," the president said, "but that's not the job I was hired to do. My job is to solve this problem.

He's "furious" at BP for not getting this solved quickly enough then he goes around saying he and the government are completely in charge and it is his job to fix it. This is a common theme - "It's my responsibility but it's someone else's fault that the problem (economy, healthcare, energy, education, oil spill, Iran nukes, etc.) isn't fixed"

Sorry to rant and derail but it's driving me nuts and it is not LEADERSHIP.

clearly you don't realize that the best way to stop this spill is to spend all your time lionizing the oil industry and creating commisions.

:good!: great point ..

This top hat isnt working imo, Its bouncing around and isnt getting a seal.

Next up on BP’s list to stop well… Scottish terrier, race car, and iron, in that order. Followed by more rolling of the dice hoping to get a “Get outa Jail for free card”

Also sorry to get off track, but that Jobs report today was horrible, and Obama is telling people "Hey we created 440K Jobs" but he isnt mentioning that 420K of those Jobs (census workers) expire in a month

If the vents aren't closed and it is jumping around a lot, that doesn't bode well. Hopefully they can get it under control - but there must be some crazy flow/pressure fluctuations with the three phase flow they're dealing with.

What yet needs to be done to complete this cap system?

More adjusting/stabilization?

Close some vents?

??

This was posted this morning:

• The LMRP cap was placed on top of the LMRP at approximately 8:35 pm CDT on June 3.
• Gas first reached the Discoverer Enterprise at approximately 11:00 pm CDT on June 3; oil followed at approximately 11:10 pm CDT.
• On June 4, a total of 6,077 barrels of oil was collected and 15.7 million standard cubic feet of natural gas was flared.
• Optimization continues and improvement in oil collection is expected over the next several days.

Anyone see an update for today?

Also, how do they know how much gas is being flared?

watching part of resident evil (one of them) on TNT ...... it really makes you wonder what it would be like if/when something catastrophic happened to the US (disease, terrorism, etc.) ..... the govt response in the gulf is no big surprise .. it isn't hard to imagine that civilized society would fall apart pretty quickly .....

it would depend on who's in charge in Washington DC. If you have a bunch of Chicago liberals interested only in the next campaign and/or exploiting any crisis that falls in their laps, then I would agree with you.

fail, name one example of effective leadership Obama has provided thus far.

Maybe I should have fixed the post to include both the Texas Neocon and Chicago liberal.

All presidents, both parties exploit whatever falls in their laps for political gain. Bush and Rove were pretty good at playing the terrorism and social issues cards. Heck, he won in 2004 not b/c John Kerry was a d-bag (though it helped out alot) but b/c same-sex marriage issues were on the ballots in 20+ states. It brought out more Repubs to the polls

Obama will use this to advance energy legislation just as he used the economic crisis to push for financial regulation.

Do you think what Obama did in Afghanistan by "surging" more troops despite the objections of some ion his own party is an example of leadership?

he surged troops in, yes, but he's also saddled them with restrictive rules of engagement. Couple that with announcing an end date to the US commitment and that's not so much leadership as it is a recipe for trouble.

orangetoes if your still around

How come BP's not pumping the surface oil into supertankers to try and get some of the oil out of the gulf?

Good question.

Allegedly they siphoned up 10,000 barrels yesterday.

If previous estimates were correct, that would be a net of about 6,000 barrels less/day than before the cap.

Assuming the estimates were correct.

Still a lot of oil spewing out.
