Okay I was a bit harsh on Dooley.....

I remember the rats jumping from the good ship Dooley that was sinking following the Kentucky debacle, and how a bunch of homers were spinning it as a good thing! Dooley was a lame duck in 2012 and some how could not cash in with one of the most prolific offenses in vol history. A total numb skull who changed his defense in the most critical year of his career.:eek:lol:

Also, posters really wanted Randy Shannon .. When Sal arrived it went over at first like a wet fart in a tuxedo

Not sure Dooley could have made a worse choice for DC or a more stupid decision than to transition to the 3-4.

The best thing about the Dooley chapter of UT football is that it is over... except here.

Even his long term assistant DB coach bailed on him and left for Nebraska...

Yeah. In retrospect that was an even bigger deal than thought at the time. I'm with LAVol. I think DD wanted out and was trying to find an easy way. I'm not sure why Hart wouldn't have just offered him an out without with a zero sum buyout.

I think the best thing about the Dooley chapter is that when he was done with our football team, we had to go to our 5th or 6th choice for head coach and ended up with Jones. I've stated before, if he can't get the job done on the field, he has recruited well enough to set the next guy up and make the job much more attractive than it was when he got it.

This is true. The worst thing UT can have in a HC is a guy who reaches the 7-10 win level but can never get over the hump to actually compete for and win the SEC.... I'm thinking someone like Shula.

I vehemently disagree with your statement. We are a program in shambles and are at a historic low. What you just stated would be laughed at on every national sports talk show in the country. We haven't won 10 games in 7 years. If we win 10 games, I promise that we are competing for the sec championship. In every year Fulmer won at least 10 games, we were competing for the sec championship. This is a new mote competitive world. all sec teams , including Vandy, have the money to compete. It really wasn't like that in the 80s and 90s as there were only six teams who realistically could win the sec.
It's not lowering the standards which is to win the SEC. We have 1 national title in 65 years, and now it's won on the field, so by winning the SEC, it's more or less like making the final four in basketball. We need a coach that can get us in the mix to be in a Atlanta three or four times in ten years. In the off years, we still make it to a nice, hopefully New Year's Day bowl.

Well, what does that mean? Gruden still isn't coming. Texas is the best job in the country and had to settle for Charlie strong. To get a guaranteed upgrade, you have to get lucky with timing like Carolina and Bama. Guys with good jobs don't leave anymore.

I personally can't fault anything related to the coaches in the UGA game. Jones had exactly the right strategy. They capitalized on their breaks. They didn't "stop" UGA's O but they were able to limit them enough. UT was clearly the more physical team.

Jones got them to the last play and came up literally an inch or two from beating a superior team. Very impressive IMO.

I wouldn't call it a "Dooley". I don't remember any undisciplined plays that cost last year's Vols the win. I don't remember any plays that yielded rule changes :loco:. I don't remember too many guys on the field.

It came down to a guy laying his all on the line and losing control of the ball a fraction of a second too soon.

To say it was a "dooley"... diminishes what those guys did IMO.
Agree completely. Just like it wasn't always Dooley's fault when screwy things happened. It's hard for fans to grasp, but it's just not always somebody's "fault" when you lose.

I do agree that timing can be key, but I don't agree that coaches with good jobs won't leave.

And you can't honestly say that a completely upgraded roster doesn't make the UT job more attractive to someone out there. You're talking about a tradition-rich school with some of the best facilities, one of the biggest stadiums in the best conference in college football.

That's what you saw Bielema leave Wisconsin for Arkansas. Chris Peterson left an easy situation for Washington. It happens, but you need to not have a dumpster fire when your job comes open.

But with Dooley, it was always like a black cloud following the program. I still remember Dooley on crutches for miss st game. How ironic was that?

Some people have never held a position of responsibility nor observed someone in that kind of position sinking. It produces a level of stress most of you will never know. It is humiliating and crushes a person's ego completely. Different people react differently but virtually all will enter a stage of deep depression. Dooley's behavior is consistent with someone trapped in depression created by a massive personal failure.

He's not the devil and, no, not even if he lashed out at people around him. He's just a guy who was not up to the job, had everything go wrong against him that could, and was completely swallowed up by failure.

I tend to agree with this. But I still believe Kiffin is the scum of the earth.

Translation:
"Let me explain Dooley's mindset, because most of you don't understand responsibility the way Dools and I do. Even though he was a d*ck to everyone in the program, it wasn't because he was a d*ck but because of the stress created by responsibility. Don't worry; you wouldn't get it."

Then, some talk about how Dooley actually recruited about as well as you can expect, took over the worst situation ever and turned it into a good situation for Butch because of "stability," and how his tenure was actually not all bad. And if someone responds with something like, "well, he did lose to Kentucky and post the worst back-to-back seasons in a century," he'll respond with "But what do YOU know about responsibility? Because where I work, I have a lot, and let me tell you: it's hard."

Rinse, repeat, 50x per thread. Pay attention and you'll notice; it's kind of hard not to.

Oh, and by the way, Dooley had PLENTY of ego when he left UT. Sjt's little anecdote didn't even have a point.

Translation:

Step 1: Take what someone actually says and twist it around to change the meaning.

Step 2: Re-interpret it as to what you think the poster really meant to say (very LG'esque btw).

Step 3: Then take said post and re-post it out of context to make it look like a douche post.

Step 4: Embellish the he!! out of said post to make it sound even worse.

Step 5: Then hurdle insults toward the person for a post that you disagree with even though you actually created said post... not the person you're complaining about.

wash... rinse... repeat

With Dooley you always felt that there was going to be a giant cluster at some point during the game that caused the wheels to come off.

To be fair, Les Miles' mass subbing warranted a clock run off and game over as we weren't allotted the proper time. And the UNC game created another rule change.
Scary to think though that if those don't happen, it's quite possible he would've been here another year or so with a win at LSU and bowl victory. Thank goodness they both got screwed up. I''ll take those losses if it means a quicker move to success rather than delayed again.

Agreed, if we had beat LSU and NC CDD might still be here.

But... you know all, see all including the depths of the souls of other human beings.

Umm...

Which of us is the one psychoanalyzing Dooley? The one guessing at "the depths of the souls of other human beings?" Even you can't get this one wrong.

Even as big of a jerk as you are, I don't wish this on you... but your attitude makes you a prime candidate.

The humorous thing about you is your rants about Dooley being arrogant, a jerk, et al... How's the cooking business Pot?

Oh, I'm absolutely a jerk to you and to anyone who thinks they're better than the others in the conversation. You've been talking down to the entire board since you joined it. See Exhibit A:

Some people have never held a position of responsibility nor observed someone in that kind of position sinking. It produces a level of stress most of you will never know.

Of course, we all know that "some people" doesn't include sjt. Exhibit B:

Almost as funny as people who lack the life experience to sympathize with someone who fails like that.

Which, of course, doesn't include sjt. And Exhibit C:

If you ever rise very far in responsibility and the attitude you have here carries over to real life... you are likely to have that feeling one day.

Couldn't even get through one post without going all life-lesson grandpa on everyone, huh? Thanks, but no thanks.

Lol, you have a great imagination and are waist deep in assumptions. I am humbled to be in the presence of someone with such great life experiences. I just wish I could have half the experiences you have had. Thank you for setting me straight.

Please point out where I have trashed Dooley. I'll wait, and while you're doing that, continue to talk down to the entire board like you're a saint or something. Dooley was a very poor people person and it was part of his ultimate failure here. He was really bad with relationships and it was very clear that he would not last long early on. So please spare us the whole speech, because frankly you are just talking out of your ass again.

BearCat hit the nail on the head right here. 90% of sjt's posts are basically just him saying, "I am older and wiser than you, so listen to me."

Observing someone's behavior isn't quite the same as making claims about what someone REALLY thinks contrary to their own words and actions... Of course that's kind of inconvenient to your whole schtick.

Hardly. Just folks like you... and I make no more apologies for having strong, reasoned, fact based opinions than I would expect you to... if you ever stated one.

Good for you. I really don't expect someone with your arrogance to ever admit someone else was right... just remember when the day comes. Pride indeed does go before the fall.

VKAMan, 95% of our arguments are because you either have horrible reading comprehension or just choose to burn down straw men.

None of your "exhibits" come close to proving your point... unless your point is to attack a straw man... which knowing your history is probably the case.

I know he tried. I know he didn't have all good players. I appreciate his effort. I should not knock the guy. I agree.

Funny though how some defend a multi-millionaire coach and manage to harass, poke fun, ridicule players half his age their entire career at UT and think that's okay.
Hey, that's what the Legion of Low Expectations do....feed on their own.

If that's your way of saying that you've never tried to defend Dooley by talking up the stability that he brought, I'm not even going to get into that. I remember you saying it as clearly as I remember telling you that literally any terrible coach we hired would have had the same effect. If you want to deny it, that's fine, but I wouldn't make fun of you playing dimestore psychologist and then try to do the same thing myself.

in what respect were you right? Opinions aren't the problem; acting like your opinions are more valid than those of others because you're old is. When you see someone clinging to age and "life experience," you can guarantee they're making exactly zero valid points.

You should talk to that one Pearl lover KBVol, though. You guys would be friends.

My point is that you use your so-called life experience as a fallback in almost every single argument. If you have to continually try to convince people that you're important and experienced, you're not. You'd think that in your infinite life experience you would have learned that by now.

When you say, "BearCat, you lack the life experience to understand this situation," you are implying that you DO have the sufficient experience and that that is why you're right and he's wrong. That's a direct implication, not a strawman, and that's what I'm attacking. Not sure why that's hard to understand.

Weird target...KB always comes across reasonable to me...if he's more impressed with Bruce in comparison to Zo...he's not alone.
