Olympic Athlete Turns Her Back on the US Flag as Star Spangled Banner Played

I thought having the first black woman President would have fixed all the issues in the black community. I guess she is just like all the other former democratic presidents. Promise to fix all the problems facing the black community, but never delivers anything. Don’t worry black folks in 3.5 years the dems will have a new plan to fix everything for you. You can believe that.

For all the woke folks in the thread telling everyone about the first amendment. I and anybody else are free to call her an ungrateful stupid b&tch if we so choose. She made a choice to turn her back and I can make a choice to say anything I would like to about that choice. The first amendment works both ways. I find it amusing how the “progressive’s” always have a problem whenever a lib is called out for exercising their free speech while trying to silence everyone who disagrees.

Cant we get an actual SJW with some balls?

I mean there are countries that sponsor killings for homosexuality, infidelity, etc. Burn one of those flags, I'll give you some respect.

You bring up the exact point the IOC tries to avoid. Why do athletes think everyone agrees with their cause? It would turn into a war zone. The Olympics is for sport.

My issue with this is that she said she was pissed because she felt like they played her own country's national anthem for the sole purpose of disrespecting her. WHAT?!? It's not about YOU sister! There were two other competitors on that podium besides you! You're up there competing on the world stage, representing this country, and you felt offended because they had the "gall" to play YOUR country's National Anthem during the award ceremonies? Think about how absolute backwards and misguided that logic is! My thought process is, if you are SO offended by our nation's flag and hearing our national anthem, what are you doing competing in the first place? If you truly want to protest, then drop out and refuse to compete. Refuse to represent the country you are so desperately wanting to besmirch and disrespect. If you're only doing this to serve your own self interest, then you are doing it for the wrong reasons. You're making this about you. Acting this way on the world stage is not affecting positive change in any appreciable way. All you're doing is proving to the whole world what a complete horse's ass you are being.

I don’t like hearing about it but I understand….. I had been taught since I was little about respecting the flag and still teach it to my kids…. As a protestor…. They do something they know will piss people off bc it it a way to draw attention to their cause.
And knowing this, the other side still plays right into their hands and get butt hurt over it. You mentioned having children. Some hammer thrower turning away from the flag at some random sporting event should be the least of your worries right now.

Thats the irony. Those freedoms are what makes this country great.

Yet this particular athlete obviously thinks America isn’t that great. But the country that she is ashamed of is one of the main reasons she is where she is. She owes a big chunk of her success to her country. Yet here she is disrespecting it on a world stage.

Is she free to do so? Yes. Is she free of ridicule for her actions? No.

So why does expressing disdain automatically equate to butthurt?

Or maybe she thinks America is great but wants to make it even better and recognizes that this country has flaws and wants to use her platform to get people talking about them. And here we are.

And what does acting like a jackass in front of the whole world accomplish? Tell me. Do you honest and truly think what she did affected change for the positive? I'll save you the suspense. No, it didn't and she knows it too. She made it about HER. Sometimes you have to know when the moment is bigger than you. Also, just because you're a self-proclaimed "activist" doesn't mean EVERY SINGLE MOMENT is a time to express protest. Sometimes the right thing to do is to just act with dignity and respect instead of constant bitterness and resentment. If you're that unhappy, there would be no better way to protest than to drop out and refuse to participate. I guarantee you that the two women standing there with their hands on their hearts and facing the flag also believe that the country has flaws and could/should be better. The difference is unlike the bronze medalist, they didn't make it all about them.

These people are essentially defending the child at the cash register that didnt get the candy bar and threw a fit.

She probably just wants to be the next Kappernick. Ignoring her would be the thing that would annoy her the most. When a child pitches a tantrum in the candy aisle, sometimes you just got to ignore them.

Want people to pay attention to your sports-based protest? Be someone who is well known first.

In two weeks, no one will remember her name but will still talk about that twit who turned their back on the flag. And that's gonna sting. What's her name? I dunno. What what's her cause? I dunno.

Possible. But it still doesn’t change the fact it was in bad taste and she deserves to be ridiculed over it.

Plus like I said earlier, I'm sure the other two women on the podium also think America is great and recognizes it has flaws and could be better. But they opted not to make jackasses out of themselves and handled the moment with grace and dignity. Frankly, Gwen Berry has a lot of growing up to do.
